In short
- Webtoons: color, vertical scroll, bought one episode at a time. At the prices on file an episode costs about $0.24 to $0.50 in coins, and the coins buy access, not a file.
- Manga: pages you turn, sold as chapters, magazine issues and volumes. FAKKU and Irodori Comics sell downloadable files, and Irodori's are DRM-free PDFs.
- Japanese law leads hentai made and sold in Japan to carry mosaics. English licensors FAKKU and Irodori sell editions without them. Korean-style services label versions of a series instead: Steamy, Uncut, Full ver.
- The 18+ webtoon editions mostly sit on the websites. The iPhone and Android apps of Toomics, Lezhin, Tappytoon and Manta carry all-ages or edited builds.
Both formats are sold legally in English, and for both the explicit version usually lives on the website, not in the app. Webtoons win on price per sitting and phone reading. Manga wins on ownership and on uncut editions, because the two English hentai licensors hand you a file.
Webtoons vs manga: how the formats read
Merriam-Webster defines a webtoon as "a type of digital comic published online, formatted vertically, and released in episodes", and traces the Korean word weptun to 1994 at the latest. The dictionary also notes that WEBTOON in capitals is the trademark of one platform, so we use the lowercase word for the format. Toomics and Honeytoon describe their catalogs as full-color vertical series; Toomics' App Store text promises "full-color artwork". The webtoon glossary entry has the longer definition.
Manga is page-based: panels fill a page, you turn it, and chapters collect into volumes or magazine issues. The labels give a hint about color. FAKKU's tag index and MangaPlaza's keyword list both carry a Full Color tag, which a format that was color by default would not need.
Korean comics are called manhwa. The Anime News Network lexicon says the Korean word covers comics of any origin, while English uses it only for comics of Korean origin. So most adult webtoons on the Korean-style services are manhwa in vertical form, and manhwa can also mean a printed book. Manga and manhwa differ by country of origin; webtoon and manga differ by layout.
Reader apps treat the two as separate modes. YACReader's store text lists a "manga right-to-left mode" and "continuous vertical scroll for webtoon", and Panels ships right-to-left (manga) and vertical presets. If you keep files, your reader needs both, and vertical scroll support is the one that varies.
What you own differs too. Tappytoon says episodes unlocked with points are "permanently added to your unlock history", but a coin buys access on that platform only. Tapas shows the risk: it ends service on 2027-03-31 and says unlocked episodes become inaccessible. A PDF from Irodori sits on your own drive.

How adult webtoons and adult manga differ
Korean-style services: 19+ and labeled versions
In the 2014 English text of Korea's Youth Protection Act, a juvenile is a person under 19, so adult webtoons carry a 19+ label at home. Article 16 requires sellers of media harmful to juveniles to verify age and identity, and Article 9 counts lewd or obscene material as harmful. Webtoon age ratings themselves are set by the platforms under a self-regulation committee; a KCSC official told Asia Economy in 2020 that there are no penalty provisions behind it.
Adult-only titles were 57.7% of web comics available in Korea in 2024, according to KOMACON data reported by the Korea Herald, and 71.3% of Lezhin Comics' Korean catalog. Those are domestic catalogs, not the English sites. We found no reputable source on how Korean law applies to the English-language sites; Korean ID checks need a Korean phone number or i-PIN, which readers abroad do not have, so the English sites run their own account checks.
The English services solve the censorship question by publishing versions of a series. Tappytoon sells [Steamy] editions, which it describes as partially censored, and [Uncut] editions, which it calls unabridged; both are web only. Manta keeps its [Full ver.] editions on the web for age-verified adults and edits the app versions to their rating. Honeytoon's default reading version is the censored one, and the uncensored version sits behind its Ultra plans or tokens. Lezhin's R-rated catalog is on its website and in an Android APK, and its App Store and Play builds carry no R-rated titles. Toomics' iPhone and Android apps are an all-ages build, and its adult series are on the website.
The stores explain the split. Apple's guideline 1.1.4 bans overtly sexual material as the point of an app, and Google Play's policy says it does not allow apps "intended to be sexually gratifying". The services' store builds are the edited ones.
Japanese manga: Article 175 and mosaics
Article 175 of Japan's Penal Code makes distributing or publicly displaying obscene drawings or electronic records a crime, punishable by up to two years in prison, a fine of up to 2.5 million yen, or both. The code does not define obscenity. Courts use a 1957 test from the Lady Chatterley ruling, and the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund says obscuring body parts became standard practice to avoid charges. A publisher was convicted under the article in 2004 over the manga Misshitsu and fined 1.5 million yen on appeal, police investigated the magazine Comic Mega Store in 2013, and in June 2026 Fantia said a police inquiry had pushed it to tighten its mosaic rules (the inquiry concerned live-action work, and drawn work kept the earlier rules).
Japanese platforms put the rule in writing. pixiv, FANBOX and Ci-en require mosaics or solid fills, with a minimum of 4 pixels or 1/100 of the image's long side. The mosaic censorship entry covers the practice.
English editions can differ. FAKKU's subscription page promises "completely uncensored English hentai comics. No black bars and no mosaics", though its tag index still has Mosaics and Whiteout tags, so check the tag on a title before buying. Irodori Comics sells uncensored localizations, blocks users in Japan from uncensored content, and reserves the right to alter releases where details may be open to legal contest. We found no legal source that spells out why English editions can drop the mosaics, so we repeat what the licensors state. The porn comics vs hentai manga page covers the Western side of the same question.
How each format is sold
Webtoon services mostly sell by the episode. The arithmetic below uses the coin packs and episode costs in our research files; the episode cost is what we saw on one title, and it varies by series.
| Service | Pack prices on file | Episode cost | Per episode |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lalatoon | 25 clovers $3.99 to 500 clovers $47.99 (web) | 3 clovers | $0.29 to $0.48 |
| Tappytoon | 1,400 points $1.99; 3,900 points $4.99 | 300 points | $0.38 to $0.43 |
| Lezhin | 400 coins plus 45 bonus $9.99 | 20 coins or more | about $0.45 at 20 coins |
| Manta | 1,250 Gems $9.99 | 30 to 60 Gems | $0.24 to $0.48 |
| Honeytoon | 700 coins EUR 29.99; 2,000 coins EUR 49.99 | 9 coins | EUR 0.22 to EUR 0.39 |
| Toomics | coin price not published; VIP $8.99 or $9.99 a month, $47.99 a year | 1 to 3 coins | not computable |
Memberships sit beside the coins. Toomics VIP at $47.99 a year works out to $4 a month, Manta Standard is $4.99 a month and Tappytoon Club Standard $4.99, and TOPTOON Plus has dropped coins for a membership alone. For scale, 40 episodes at Lalatoon's lowest rate come to about $11.60, nearly three months of a Toomics VIP year.
Manga is sold by the book, by the chapter or by the month. FAKKU Unlimited costs $14.95 for 30 days, $44.85 for 90 days ($14.95 a month) or $179 for 365 days (about $14.71 per 30 days), and covers magazine issues. Its single books ran from $6.48 on sale to $24.25 on the home page, and a 63-page doujin sold at $8.50. Irodori Comics has no subscription: titles ran from $5.25 to $39.25 for a compilation, with some at $0.99 in a monthly deal. MangaPlaza prices a point at $0.01, sells Premium for $6.99 a month with a one-time 7-day trial, and gives the first chapter of most titles free. BookWalker prices a coin at $0.01 and sells volumes you keep in its library, with mature titles hidden until you switch them on.
A webtoon episode and a manga book are different units, so compare by what you keep. A $0.40 episode is gone when the account or the service goes. An $8.50 book from FAKKU is a download.

Files, apps and offline reading
FAKKU book editions download as PDFs or zip archives of images at 2600 or 3200 pixels vertical resolution; its page does not mention DRM. Irodori Comics sells DRM-free PDFs at 3200 pixels tall. BookWalker's files are encrypted LCP files for reader apps such as Thorium Reader and FBReader. MangaPlaza streams in the browser and does not allow downloads or offline reading.
Webtoon services keep their files. Toomics and Honeytoon have no downloads. Manta lets every user download episodes inside its app, and Lezhin's Android PLUS APK promises "Download Titles & Read Offline"; neither gives you a file outside the app. The offline reading guide covers the readers and the downloads page lists which services sell files.
On phones the split is reversed. The webtoon services have iPhone and Android apps, though with all-ages builds. The manga stores mostly do not: FAKKU has no app in a US App Store search, Irodori has none, and MangaPlaza says it is browser only.

FAQ
Are manhwa and webtoons the same thing?
Not quite. Manhwa means Korean comics, and webtoon means the vertical episodic online format. Most Korean webtoons are manhwa, but manhwa also covers printed comics.
Are adult webtoons censored like hentai manga?
Mosaics are a Japanese legal habit under Article 175. The Korean-style services in our files do not state a mosaic policy; they publish labeled versions, such as Tappytoon's partially censored Steamy and unabridged Uncut editions.
Can I download adult webtoons?
Manta and Lezhin's Android APK allow downloads inside their apps. Toomics and Honeytoon have none. No webtoon service in our files sells DRM-free files, which Irodori Comics does for manga.
Which costs less per sitting?
Webtoons, by the episode: about $0.24 to $0.50 at the file prices. Manga books cost $5 to $25 each, or $14.95 a month for FAKKU Unlimited, and you get more pages per purchase.
Can I read hentai manga on a phone?
Yes, in a browser. FAKKU reads in the browser, Irodori sells "Buy to Download or Read Online", and MangaPlaza is browser only.
