WEBTOON review: mature content, coins and Canvas

WEBTOON has a Mature (18+) rating, but its rules ban nudity and explicit sex everywhere, in the app and on the website, and even mosaic-censored versions are not allowed. It is a free, huge mainstream webtoon platform, not an adult one; explicit adult webtoons are sold elsewhere.

In short

  • WEBTOON allows sexual themes but bans nudity and graphic depictions of explicit sexual acts, on the app and the website alike.
  • Even censored explicit art is out: Box and mosaic censoring are not allowed.
  • The Mature (18+) rating hides series from accounts whose birthdate says under 18. It marks older themes; it does not open explicit content.
  • Originals are free on a weekly schedule. Coins for early episodes exist only in the app, from $0.99 for 10, and the per-episode price shows only in the app.
  • For explicit adult webtoons, the licensed options are other stores: Tappytoon, Manta, Lezhin and Honeytoon among them.

What WEBTOON is

WEBTOON is the English edition of NAVER's webtoon platform, operated by NAVER WEBTOON Ltd. WEBTOON Entertainment, the name on the app's copyright line, has traded on Nasdaq as WBTN since June 27, 2024. It has two halves. ORIGINALS are series WEBTOON publishes itself, free to read with weekly updates. CANVAS is open self-publishing, where anyone can upload a webcomic. The app's store text also lists graphic novels such as Batman: Wayne Family Adventures and Avatar: The Last Airbender.

The store description claims "millions of episodes for FREE" and the world's largest selection of webcomics; WEBTOON gives no title count. The ORIGINALS genre tabs run from Drama, Fantasy and Comedy to Romance, Thriller, Horror and Graphic novel. CANVAS adds tabs such as Romance Fantasy and LGBTQ+. The site runs in English, Spanish, French, German, Thai, Indonesian and Traditional Chinese, and what you can read depends on where you are. It sits among the mainstream services on our list of comic platforms.

Does WEBTOON have adult content?

Adult themes, yes. Adult content in the porn-comics sense, no. Readers searching "adult webtoons" often land here expecting otherwise, so here is WEBTOON's own wording from its Content Guidelines:

While sexual themes and discussions are allowed, we do not allow nudity or content that is solely intended to be sexually gratifying. This includes full and partial nudity as well as graphic depictions of explicit sexual acts.

The guidelines go further than most mainstream platforms. Full frontal or rear nudity is not allowed. Box and mosaic censoring are not allowed; censoring of nudity must be a natural part of the imagery. So a creator cannot post an explicit scene with a black bar over it, the way Japanese adult manga handles the law there. The scene has to be drawn so that nothing explicit is on the page in the first place.

Beyond nudity, the guidelines ban series glorifying or romanticizing sexual violence, illegal sex acts, including, but not limited to, bestiality, necrophilia, incest, and say that Series containing sexualized underage characters, or underage characters involved in sexual relationships or in romantic relationships with adults will be removed. The rules are the same in the app and on webtoons.com. There is no adult build and no 18+ website hidden behind a switch.

How the WEBTOON Mature filter works

What WEBTOON does have is an age rating. On CANVAS, creators answer a questionnaire when they upload, and A rating is then assigned based on the responses. The scale has four levels: All Ages, 13+, 16+ and Mature. WEBTOON describes Mature as Suitable for readers age 18 or older, and its rating text reads:

Contains graphic imagery, violence, profanity, nudity, or sexual themes. Though explicit sexual content may not be present...

That sentence mentions nudity, which looks like a contradiction. It is not a loophole: the CANVAS ratings arrived in August 2024 and the Content Guidelines quoted above did not change with them. A Mature series can be dark, violent and openly about sex. It still cannot show nudity or a sex scene.

The filter itself is account-based. 'Mature' series are inaccessible to readers under the age of 18, and WEBTOON knows your age from the birthdate you type in: Age verification is required when creating an account or logging in. Depending on your region, additional steps such as guardian consent may be required. Nothing in the help centre describes an ID check. We could not confirm what a logged-out visitor to the website sees of Mature series without an account. The terms let people use WEBTOON from 13, under a parent's supervision until 18, so the Mature line is what separates adult readers from younger ones.

Switched on, the Mature rating shows you older-reader romance, horror and drama, nothing explicit. The difference between ratings like this across stores is set out in what "mature" means on comic platforms.

Where readers go for explicit adult webtoons

Licensed Korean adult webtoons with explicit editions are sold by dedicated stores, and every one of them keeps those editions on its website, away from the App Store and Google Play. Tappytoon labels its unabridged editions [Uncut]; Manta calls its 18+ editions "[Full ver.]"; Lezhin keeps an R-rated catalog on the web and in an Android APK; Honeytoon is explicit by default and sells uncensored copies on its "Ultra" plans. Our guide to finding adult webtoons walks through the search, and adult webtoons explains the term.

What is free on WEBTOON

Most of it, if you can wait. WEBTOON exclusive ORIGINAL series are free to read, and ongoing series are updated weekly. CANVAS is free. The newest episodes of popular Originals sit behind Fast Pass, paid in coins, and many Fast Pass episodes become free after a specific period of time.

Some locked episodes open through Ad Pass: watch ads and Each unlocked Ad Pass episode will be available for 3 days. Free coins come from events; they expire, and the app spends them before bought coins.

The Daily Pass is gone. WEBTOON's product-change notice said it will no longer offer the Daily Pass feature as of 5/29 (May 29, 2025), and the episodes it covered moved to coins or the 3-day Ad Pass. The background is in our Daily Pass news story.

WEBTOON coins and what an episode costs

Coins are exclusive to the Android and iOS WEBTOON app. They cannot be bought or spent on the website, and all coin payments go through Apple or Google. The US App Store lists these coin packs and Premium plans:

Source: webtoon.zendesk.com. Prices change with region, promotions and the store you buy through.

Per coin that is 9.9 cents on the 10-coin pack, about 9.25 cents on 100 + 8 for $9.99, and about 9.1 cents on 300 + 30 for $29.99. Apple's list also shows rows that break this ladder, "[US] 100 + 8 Coins" at $5.99 and "200+8 Coins" at $4.99, which look like promotions; the full coin shop is only visible in the app.

The price per episode is not published. The price for Fast Pass may differ depending on the series, and WEBTOON's help centre says to Check the amount of Coins required from the pop-up information which appears before you unlock Fast Pass. So any figure for a Fast Pass episode in dollars depends on a number shown only in the app, and we will not guess it.

A few rules that help. Bought coins do not expire. Unlocked Fast Pass episodes stay available while the series remains on our service. Title Purchase lets you unlock all purchasable episodes of a completed series at once for a discounted price, in the app only, on selected completed series. Coins already spent are not refundable; refunds for purchases go through Google Play or the App Store.

WEBTOON Premium

WEBTOON Premium replaced Monthly Coin Premium on September 17, 2025. It is a monthly coin top-up with extras, sold only as an App Store or Google Play subscription:

  • $3.99 a month: 20 coins plus 2 bonus, ad-free Originals, no episode discount.
  • $9.99: 100 plus 10 bonus, ad-free Originals, episode discounts.
  • $19.99: 200 plus 25 bonus, with the same extras.
  • $49.99: 500 plus 75 bonus, with the same extras.

At $9.99 the subscription gives 110 coins against 108 in the $9.99 one-off pack, so the coins are nearly a wash and the value is in the ad-free Originals and the discounts. Premium does not remove every ad: WEBTOON lists CANVAS ads and the video ads for unlocking paid episodes among the ones that stay. Cancel from the Subscriptions page of the App Store or Google Play; WEBTOON cannot cancel it for you. Store routes are in our cancellation guide.

  • AndroidYesGoogle Play, NAVER WEBTOON, 100M+ downloads
  • BrowserYesread in the browser at webtoons.com; coins cannot be bought or used on the web

The App Store lists the app at 13+ and Google Play rates it 13+ as well, with "Contains ads". The website reads the same catalog under the same rules; it just cannot use coins. Some Originals can be downloaded in the app for offline reading, once per account, and Downloaded episodes are stored on your device for 30 days. Fast Pass and Ad Pass episodes cannot be downloaded. Recent reading history can be wiped in the app under MY, RECENT, the trash icon and "Delete All".

Privacy and billing

Charges show up as App Store or Google Play purchases; WEBTOON publishes no descriptor of its own. Google Play's Data safety summary says the app may share personal info, app activity and device IDs, and may collect location among other data types. Deletion can be requested.

For creators: publishing mature work on WEBTOON Canvas

CANVAS is free to publish on, and a Mature rating is open to anyone whose series fits it. The rules for content do not change at Mature: the Community Policy and Uploading Guidelines say Content that contains nudity or intended to be sexually gratifying is not allowed. An artist drawing explicit adult webtoons needs a different platform; WEBTOON is for work that keeps sex off the page. The bans across creator platforms are compared on adult content rules for creators.

The money comes from three places, per WEBTOON's creator pages:

  • Super Like, fan tips per episode. Readers buy them in the app, from $1 for 5 up to $100 for 500, and must be 18 or older to send them. The series needs 500+ Likes and the creator must be at least 18. Creators get 70% of net revenue, and net means gross minus a 30% deduction for app and in-app fees, so about 49% of what the fan paid.
  • Ad Revenue Sharing, 50% of ads shown on the series. Viewer Ads need 1,000 subscribers and 40,000 global monthly page views; Reward Ads need 100,000. Since January 13, 2026 creators can put up to six episodes behind Reward Ads, up from three.
  • Patreon integration, a "Become a Patron" button, limited on Android under Google's payment policy.

Payouts changed in January 2026: with a PayPal ID the minimum fell from $100 to $25 and the full balance is paid; with a Patreon ID it stays $100. WEBTOON's pages do not say whether Mature-rated series can join ad revenue or Super Like. Artists weighing other options can start with platforms for NSFW webtoon creators.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Huge free catalog, with Originals free on a weekly schedule.
  • Mature rating keeps older-reader series away from under-18 accounts.
  • Bought coins never expire, and Title Purchase discounts completed series.
  • Open, free publishing for creators on CANVAS, with a $25 PayPal payout minimum.

Cons

  • No explicit content at all: nudity, sex scenes and mosaic-censored art are banned.
  • Coins work only in the app, never on the website.
  • Coins per episode are shown only in the app.
  • Premium removes ads on Originals only.

Alternatives to WEBTOON for adult readers

If you came for explicit adult webtoons, start with Tappytoon: licensed Korean romance and BL, [Uncut] labels on the unabridged editions, and a 300-point episode at about 38 cents on the $4.99 pack. Manta is the binge option, with a 300+ series library from $4.99 a month and its "[Full ver.]" editions in the browser. Honeytoon is the bluntest of the three, explicit by default, with uncensored copies on its top plans and no app. If you want WEBTOON's kind of mature-but-not-explicit reading with a bigger mix of formats, INKR has a Mature shelf behind an age confirmation, and GlobalComix allows nudity outside sexual scenes and accepts no explicitly sexual stories. Readers after hentai manga, not webtoons, want FAKKU. The full ranking is on adult webtoon platforms.

Sign in with an account whose birthdate shows you are 18 or older. Mature series are hidden from accounts under 18. There is no separate adult mode.

Can CANVAS creators post mature webtoons?

They can rate a series Mature (18+) for sexual themes, violence or profanity. Nudity and sexually gratifying content are still banned at that rating.

Can I buy WEBTOON coins on the website?

No. Coins can only be bought and used in the iOS and Android apps.

Final verdict

Verdict

WEBTOON is the best free webtoon platform for mainstream reading, and its Mature rating is a sensible filter for darker romance and horror. It is not an adult webtoon site, and its rules are stricter than most: no nudity, no sex scenes, not even with a mosaic. Read it for what it is, pay for coins only in the app, and look to the dedicated stores for explicit work.
