Best adult comics apps

The best adult comics apps are Manta and Tappytoon for webtoons, Panels for DRM-free files on an iPhone and Lezhin's Android PLUS app, which is the only adult app in this group that ships outside the stores. Apple and Google both ban apps built around explicit material, so most of the adult catalog sits on a website.

In short

  • Apple's guideline 1.1.4 bans apps with pornographic material, and Google Play bans apps that exist to be sexually gratifying. Webtoon services therefore ship a cleaner store app and keep the adult editions on their website.
  • Manta, Tappytoon and Toomics follow that split. Lezhin adds an Android PLUS APK with R-rated titles, downloaded from its own site.
  • MangaPlaza and Irodori Comics have no app at all and work in a phone browser. Irodori's PDFs are DRM-free, so a local reader such as Panels or Komga opens them.
  • A reader app carries no catalog. What it shows depends on files you bought without DRM.

An app for adult comics comes in one of three forms, and the store listing tells you which. Some are store apps whose adult catalog opens only on the service's website. Some are web apps: sites you use in the phone browser with no app behind them. And some are local readers that open comic files you own. The best adult comics apps below mix all three, because no single app covers everything a reader wants.

Why adult comics are not in the app stores

The rules are written down. Apple's App Review Guideline 1.1.4 bans overtly sexual or pornographic material, meaning explicit displays of sexual organs or activities meant to arouse. Guideline 1.2 allows an app that shows content from a web service to carry incidental mature material, but only if it is hidden by default and only displayed when the user turns it on via your website. Guideline 2.3.8 asks for icons and screenshots that suit a 4+ rating, so adult services show tame store pages. We re-read the guidelines; the page was last updated on October 16.

Google Play's policy does not allow apps that contain or promote sexual content, including pornography, and it forbids lewd text in the store listing. It does let a catalog app carry sexual book or video titles as a minor fraction of the catalog, as long as the app does not promote them and carries no porn. Neither exception fits a service whose draw is its adult library.

Lezhin states the result plainly in a developer reply on its App Store listing: Due to Apple's policy, mature content cannot be provided on apps, and it points readers to the website. Manta, Tappytoon and Toomics say the same in their help centers. For a reader the consequence is simple. Installing the app gets you the all-ages catalog, and the adult one needs a browser, a login and an age switch.

The picks run in the order we would try them. Two of them are not apps in the strict sense; they stay because a phone reader meets them in exactly that role.

Webtoons

Manta

Best store app for a flat monthly price

Price
Free tier · $4.99/mo
Type
licensed webtoon store
Formats
webtoons, manhwa, manga
Free reading
Yes

Manta has apps for iPhone and Android, rated 17+ on the App Store, and the 18+ full versions of its series open on Manta's website for age-verified adults. The help center cites app store policies. The age is entered at sign-up and cannot be changed later.

A Standard membership costs $4.99 for one month in the app and opens an Unlimited Library the vendor puts at 300+ series. Premium costs $9.99 in the app and $8.99 on Manta web, and adds 1,420 Gems a month. Without a membership, 1,250 Gems cost $9.99; at the 40 to 50 Gems Manta gives as examples, an episode lands at about 32 to 40 cents. Free Pass opens one episode every 24 hours on 400+ titles, and the episode stays readable for 72 hours. Offline downloads work for every user. There are no refunds on memberships or Gems, and deleting the app does not cancel anything: cancel where you subscribed (App Store, Google Play or the web account).

Reader app

Panels

Best on iPhone and iPad for files you own

Price
Free tier · $1.49/mo
Type
comic reader for your own files, with a DRM-free comics store
Formats
western comics, manga, webtoons
Free reading
Yes

Panels is an iPhone, iPad and Mac reader with an App Store rating of 4+ and no Android version. Importing, a library and reading progress are free. Premium costs $1.49 a month or $14.99 a year, and Panels 3 is a one-off $19.99. Premium adds a password or Face ID lock on single comics and folders, an incognito mode for reading sessions, and an OPDS client for Komga and Kavita servers.

Panels opens what you bring, and a DRM-free PDF from Irodori Comics is the plain case. Its vertical mode suits webtoon-style files.

Tappytoon

Best labels for what an 18+ episode contains

Price
Free tier · $4.99/mo
Type
licensed webtoon store
Formats
webtoons, manhwa
Free reading
Yes

Tappytoon's apps are rated 17+ and carry the all-ages and 16+ editions. The [Steamy] (partly censored) and [Uncut] (unabridged) editions are on the website only, which Tappytoon attributes to Apple and Google platform policies. To get at them you log in, confirm you are 18 or older and switch to mature mode. What happens at that confirmation needs an account to check, and Tappytoon does not say whether it is a declaration or a document check.

Club Standard costs $4.99 a month or $47.99 a year and brings 4,400 points on the first day of each cycle, plus 30 bonus points a day. One [Steamy] episode on the title we looked at cost 300 points, so the monthly grant covers about 14 episodes. Bought separately, 3,900 points cost $4.99 (about 38 cents an episode) and 1,400 points cost $1.99 (about 43 cents). Free reading comes from a Time Till Free episode every 24 hours on marked titles and a weekly Free Ticket (48 hours). Purchases and unlocks are final. Club is cancelled through the store where you bought it.

Lezhin Comics

Best for an adult app outside the stores, on Android

Price
Free tier · from $2.99 (120 + 40 coins)
Type
adult webtoon platform
Formats
webtoons, manhwa
Free reading
Yes

Lezhin's iPhone app is rated 12+ and the Play Store build is rated 13+, and neither carries R-rated titles. The Lezhin Comics PLUS APK is a separate Android download from lezhinus.com that does, with offline downloads. Lezhin's own page says PLUS is Android only and that it must be installed from unknown sources. We found no official statement on why a service ships an APK from its site. An APK installed by hand skips Google Play's checks, so take it only from lezhinus.com.

On the website the 18+ switch sends logged-out visitors to the login page, and the check after login needs an account to inspect. Lezhin has no subscription. A 400-coin pack with 45 bonus coins costs $9.99, which is about 2.2 cents a coin, so a 20-coin episode costs about 45 cents and a 50-coin episode about $1.12. Coins can expire. A refund is possible within 7 days of purchase if none of the coins were used.

Manga

MangaPlaza

Best web app for adult romance manga in a phone browser

Price
Free tier · $6.99/mo
Type
Licensed manga store with a Mature (18+) shelf
Formats
manga
Free reading
Yes

MangaPlaza says it is only available on browsers, with no app version, so the phone experience is the mobile site. Titles with the Mature (18+) keyword sit behind a setting you turn on yourself after a pop-up asks if you are over 18. Premium costs $6.99 a month and has a one-time 7-day trial per user and payment method. Points are worth one cent each, so a listing priced at 199 points costs $1.99. The first chapter of most titles is free, and a Now Free shelf rotates.

Reading is streaming only: the terms bar downloading and offline reading. Cancel on the website under My Account, Premium Membership Details; email requests are not accepted.

Doujinshi

Irodori Comics

Best source of DRM-free files for a local reader

Price
Free
Type
Licensed doujinshi publisher and download store
Formats
doujinshi
Free reading
Yes

Irodori Comics has no app either, and it works in a phone browser. It sells doujinshi one title at a time as DRM-free PDFs at 3200 px tall, from $5.25 to $39.25 on the day we checked, with monthly deals that take some titles to $0.99. About 14 titles are free to read online. Buying a title gives a file you keep, and that file is the reason Irodori appears in an app ranking: it opens in Panels, Perfect Viewer, YACReader or Komga. Japan-based users are blocked from the uncensored editions.

Reader app

Komga

Best for a private library across phone, tablet and browser

Price
Free
Type
self-hosted comic and manga server
Formats
western comics, manga, webtoons
Free reading
Yes

Komga is a free, open-source server you run on your own computer or NAS. It has an integrated web reader and serves any OPDS app, and it offers no official iOS or Android app of its own. Its privacy tools are the useful part on a shared network: login-protected accounts, per-user library access, and content restrictions by age rating and by labels. A File Download role decides who can save books. Setup is the cost: Java, Docker or the desktop app.

A store app bills through Apple or Google and gets cancelled there, at the price of a smaller catalog. The subscription then shows up in the store's subscription settings, which matters if someone else sees your phone. A web app keeps the full catalog and puts the cancel button on the service's site. A local reader keeps everything on your device or home server, and the only subscription is whatever the reader itself charges.

Local readers for DRM-free files

A local reader needs a file without DRM, so BookWalker's encrypted downloads do not open in them. The apps below each have their own page with the exact prices and platforms. Two other lists rank the same readers for narrower jobs: hentai manga apps and free NSFW comics apps.

CDisplayEx is the Windows reader with Android apps: Lite is free with ads, Premium is $5.99 and connects to Komga and Kavita. Perfect Viewer is a free classic Android reader, with Perfect Viewer X at $2.99 on Android and $4.99 on Apple devices. YACReader's desktop library is free, with phone apps at $4.99 on iPhone and iPad and $4.49 on Android. Kavita is the self-hosted server with a webtoon mode in its browser reader and age-rating restrictions per user. Kavita+ costs $4 a month and is optional.

What readers ask about Mihon

Mihon turns up in most searches for an adult comics app. It is a free, open-source Android reader, and its README says the application hosts zero content. Mihon reads CBZ and ZIP files and image folders you put on the phone, and installs from mihon.app or GitHub, not from Google Play, and its FAQ gives Play's content policy as the reason. There is no iOS version, and the project warns that any app calling itself Mihon for iOS is a scam.

Mihon's own warning about third-party extensions is that they will have full access to the app and may contain malware, and extensions flagged 18+ stay hidden unless you switch them on. We do not point to any of them. For comics you bought legally, the readers above do the same job with a normal store listing.

Mihon project website

Phone privacy and billing

Check which store holds the subscription, since Manta, Tappytoon and Toomics cancel through the store they were bought in or through the website. Check whether the reader locks content: Panels Premium and YACReader on iPhone can lock folders, Mihon has an app lock, and CDisplayEx and Perfect Viewer document no lock. The setup steps are in the guide to reading adult comics on mobile.

Where to go next

Webtoon readers can go to adult webtoon apps, which covers what each store build leaves out, and manga readers to adult manga apps. Each service named above has its own page under platforms, and the home page lists every section.

FAQ

Is there an app for adult comics?

There are store apps for adult webtoon services, but the explicit editions are not in them. Apple's guideline 1.1.4 bans pornographic material and Google Play bans apps that exist to be sexually gratifying, so Manta, Tappytoon, Lezhin and Toomics keep the adult catalog on their websites. Lezhin also ships an Android PLUS APK with R-rated titles.

Can I read 18+ webtoons on an iPhone?

Yes, in Safari or another browser. The iPhone apps of Manta, Tappytoon, Lezhin and Toomics carry the all-ages catalog, and the adult editions open on each service's website after an age confirmation.

Which app opens hentai PDFs?

Any comic reader that opens PDF or CBZ files can, as long as the file has no DRM. Irodori's PDFs are DRM-free by its own statement. Panels covers iPhone and iPad, Perfect Viewer and CDisplayEx cover Android, and YACReader and Komga cover a home library.

Is it safe to install an APK from a comics site?

An APK skips Google Play's checks, so safety depends on the source. Lezhin's PLUS APK comes from lezhinus.com. Mirrors and extension repositories are not official, and Mihon warns that its extensions can contain malware.

Will deleting the app cancel my subscription?

No. Manta says that signing out or deleting the app does not cancel a membership. Cancel in the App Store or Google Play subscription settings if you bought there, or in the web account if you bought on the site.
