Adult manga apps

Manta's iPhone app is rated 16+ and opens edited versions of its series, while the 18+ full versions open only in a browser, and that split is the usual shape of adult manga apps. Apple and Google rules keep explicit material out of store builds, so the apps carry the mature-rated shelf and the websites carry the rest.

In short

Why the store builds are cleaner than the websites

Apple's App Review Guideline 1.1.4 bans overtly sexual or pornographic material, and Guideline 1.2 lets an app show a web service's content that may include incidental mature material only if it is hidden by default and shown when the user turns it on through the service's website. Metadata is held to a 4+ standard (Guideline 2.3.8). Google Play does not allow apps that contain or promote sexual content, with an exception for book and video catalogues where sexual titles are a minor fraction of the whole.

Services say this themselves. Lezhin's developer reply on its App Store listing reads: Due to Apple's policy, mature content cannot be provided on apps. Therefore, unfortunately we do not provide any mature content in our app. It sends readers to the website. We found no official statement explaining why some adult webtoon services also hand out Android APKs from their own sites, so we do not guess at it.

For manga the same rule produces three outcomes: an app that carries only edited or mature-rated titles, an app whose mature shelf is a hidden toggle, and no app. The first two are in the table.

Two things follow from the table. A mature-rated manga app is usually a mainstream reader with a gate, and the explicit publishers sell through their websites. Fantia says in its help center that it has no app and to use the browser, and no official pixivFANBOX app turned up in App Store searches.

Coins in these apps are priced per platform. INKR sells 32 coins for $1.99 on iOS, about 6.2 cents a coin, and a $4.99 INKR Extra plan that allows offline downloads, which it keeps inside the app with no file export. BookWalker coins are one cent each, so a 99-coin pack is $0.99. Manta's episodes cost 30 to 60 Gems, and Manta says the Download feature is available to all users, whatever their membership. Offline reading in BookWalker's own app is stated differently by its support FAQ and its store text, so we do not say either way.

Reading files you bought in a local reader

The explicit shops sell files instead. Irodori Comics gives DRM-free PDFs at 3200 pixels tall; FAKKU's book editions download as PDF or as zip archives of images at 2600 or 3200 pixels, and its help page does not mention DRM. Those files open in any reader that handles the format, with no store account involved. BookWalker is different: its downloads are encrypted LCP licenses for Readium LCP apps, with Thorium Reader and FBReader named on its help page, and the books cannot be opened as normal EPUBs.

Mihon is a free Android reader that ships with no content. It reads local CBZ, ZIP, RAR/CBR, EPUB and image folders, so FAKKU's zip of images matches that list, while PDF is not on it. Perfect Viewer is the free Android alternative for archives and PDFs (the classic app needs a PDF plugin, and Perfect Viewer X, $2.99 on Android, adds PDF support directly). CDisplayEx has a free Windows version and an Android Lite with ads; Premium on Android is $5.99.

On Apple devices Panels opens CBR, CBZ, CB7 and PDF, imports from iCloud Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive, SMB and AirDrop, and sells a small DRM-free store of its own. Panels+ is $1.49 a month or $14.99 a year (about $1.25 a month), and the password or Face ID lock is a Premium feature. YACReader is free on Windows, macOS and Linux, and its iPhone and iPad app costs $4.99 (Android $4.49).

Komga and Kavita are free servers that you run on a computer or NAS. Both serve CBZ, CBR, PDF and EPUB to a browser or an OPDS app, and Kavita lets an admin restrict users by age rating. Kavita+ is $4 a month and adds sync, ratings and metadata; the server itself needs no plan. A server suits a library of many bought books on several devices.

Where the ranked comparison is

This page describes the situation, and its neighbors are on the manga hub. For a ranked list of apps and sites that read hentai manga, use best hentai manga apps. Reading without a connection is covered by reading manga offline, and private library apps explains which readers lock a library. The wider app list is at adult comics apps, and the services themselves are in adult manga.

FAQ

Is there a hentai manga app on the App Store?

We found no store app from FAKKU or Irodori Comics. Apple's guidelines ban overtly sexual material, so mature manga there means mainstream, ecchi or mature-rated series with gates, such as BookWalker's hidden Mature setting.

Does Manta have 18+ manga in the app?

Manta says that because of app store policies certain series are limited in the app, and its 18+ full versions open only in a browser for adults who entered an age over 18 at sign-up.

What app opens DRM-free PDFs from Irodori Comics?

Any reader that handles PDF: Panels on Apple devices, Perfect Viewer X, CDisplayEx or YACReader, or a Komga or Kavita server.

Can I read BookWalker books in another app?

Yes, in Readium LCP apps. BookWalker lists Thorium Reader and FBReader, and says the encrypted file cannot be converted.
