What is pixiv?
pixiv is an illustration, manga and novel posting community run by pixiv Inc. in Japan. Its own tagline: pixiv is one of the world's largest art communities, where you can enjoy browsing and posting illustrations, manga, and novels.
Members post four kinds of work: illustrations, manga, Ugoira (short looping animations) and novels.
For hentai readers, pixiv matters because of who posts there. It is where most Japanese hentai and doujin artists put up R-18 illustrations and short manga first, before they sell a doujinshi or open a paid fan plan. Following an artist on pixiv is often the first step to finding their paid work, which sits on pixivFANBOX, on BOOTH or with a licensed publisher.
All posts are the members' own work. The guidelines ban reposting other people's art and using automated methods to copy a work without the rights holder's permission.
Who pixiv suits
pixiv fits readers who want to follow Japanese artists directly, see new work the day it goes up, and pay nothing. Artists use it to build an audience before they sell anything.
It is a poor fit for anyone who wants uncensored pages, a tidy store, or English everywhere. Discovery runs on user tags, much of it in Japanese, and the censoring rules are strict. Licensed, uncensored English editions are sold elsewhere, at FAKKU or Irodori Comics for example.
How to turn on R-18 on pixiv
R-18 works are hidden by default. pixiv's help center says Age-restricted content will not be displayed for those under the age of 18 or when you register for the first time.
A logged-out request for the R-18 ranking simply returned an error. To see adult work:
- Create a free pixiv account.
- Open the website, either the desktop or the mobile version, not the app.
- Set your date of birth in the account settings. pixiv says
You will need to set your date of birth to change the Age-restricted work setting.
- Switch the age-restricted work setting to show R-18. Users under 18 cannot change it.
The age check is a self-declared date of birth, with no ID step. pixiv defines R-18 as Anything that can be associated with, or represents sex, or which represents the union or joining of the genitals, or which is reminiscent of sexual acts.
A separate R-18G rating covers graphic violence and is switched on the same way.
Why the pixiv app does not show R-18
The help center is direct: you cannot change the Age-restricted work setting from the pixiv app. Please use the desktop or mobile version
. Once you have switched it on in a browser, the setting belongs to the account. The apps themselves are rated 17+ in the App Store and Mature 17+ on Google Play, and the App Store listing warns of "Frequent/Intense Sexual Content or Nudity".
Is pixiv censored?
Yes, every time. pixiv's help center explains why: pixiv is based in Japan, and as such, Japanese law (including those regarding pornography) applies to all content posted on pixiv.
The guidelines say works with graphic sex may be posted to the Service only if they have been censored appropriately

The rules on how to censor are mechanical. Mosaic squares must be at least 4 by 4 pixels, and on images longer than 400 pixels each square must be 1/100 of the long side. On a 3,000-pixel manga page that means blocks of at least 30 pixels. Solid bars and whiteout also count. The censoring has to sit on the same layer as the art so that no software programs can reverse the censorship

Restrictions for US, UK, EU and other accounts
pixiv runs a second rule set it calls "Restrictions for Healthy Expression in Specific Countries and Regions". It applied to accounts set to the United States and United Kingdom from April 25, 2024, and was extended to Australia, Canada, the EU and New Zealand on November 10, 2025.
For those accounts the terms ban sharing anything that depicts or involves the exploitation of any person, whether real or simulated (including AI-generated), whose age is below the greater of
18 or the local age, and anything depicting non-consensual sexual activity (including 'deepfake' images), revenge porn, blackmail, intimidation, snuff, torture, death, violence, incest, racial slurs, or hate speech.
pixiv may make such works inaccessible in those regions, so readers there can find works hidden that a Japanese account still sees.
The region follows the account's "Language and location" setting. pixiv sets it automatically from access data, and it can be changed on the website. Some regions cannot send R-18 commission requests at all.
What pixiv's rules ban everywhere
Outside the regional rules, the guidelines and terms prohibit:
- sexual content involving real people under 18, and photo-realistic depictions that could be mistaken for real people under 18
- real-life photographs or photo-realistic images that read as sexual or cruel
- "needlessly warped or distorted depictions of sex"
- uncensored genitals and penetration
AI-generated works are allowed but must be labeled, and the public ranking has its own AI-generated tab. Posters of R-18 work must be 18 or older and must set the R-18 restriction on the work itself; the help center warns that Simply adding the R-18 and R-18G tags to content will not restrict who can view the content.
pixiv can add or change a work's rating and suspend accounts that do not censor properly.
Searching pixiv for hentai and doujin artists
pixiv has no fixed genre menu for illustrations or manga. Readers find work through user tags and rankings. The public ranking offers Daily, Weekly, Monthly, Rookie, Original, AI-generated, Popular among male users and Popular among female users, each with tabs for Overall, Illustrations, Ugoira, Manga and Novels. The R-18 ranking is a separate view that needs a signed-in adult account.
Since May 30, 2023, pixiv no longer adds an automatic link from each work page to the artist's FANBOX, after prohibited items were shown before moderators could act. Artists still link their paid pages from their profiles. For a broader method, see how to find hentai manga.
Is pixiv free?
Yes. Browsing, posting and R-18 viewing cost nothing; the only requirement for adult work is the free account with the age setting. pixiv shows ads to free users. More legal free reading is collected on free hentai manga sites.
pixiv Premium: price and what it adds
pixiv Premium is an optional paid account. It adds convenience and does not open any works. Prices for card or PayPal payment on the website outside Japan, charged in US dollars and seen from an EU connection:

Twelve single months would cost $49.80, so the 12-month plan saves $8.39 a year, the 16% pixiv advertises. pixiv changed its yen prices on February 12, 2026 and said USD prices stayed the same. App prices are set inside the iOS and Android stores and were not visible to us.
What Premium adds: search sorted by popularity, hidden ads (on PC only certain ads), browsing history, novel word-count search, an Access Report of who viewed your work, scheduled posts and replacing posted works. Sorting search results by popularity is Premium-only, so free accounts cannot do it.
First-time subscribers who pay by card or PayPal on the website get a 1-month free trial. It is not offered in the app, it renews into a paid plan, and pixiv says the campaign "may end without prior notice".
Cancelling pixiv Premium
On the web, open the subscription information page and choose to unsubscribe from pixiv Premium. If you subscribed in the app, cancel in App Store or Google Play settings, because the pixiv app cannot do it. Premium stays active until the paid period ends, and pixiv says we do not offer day-by-day refunds for the unused part of your membership.

The official pixiv app is on both stores, published by Pixiv Inc. and updated in late October 2026. It opens illustrations, manga, Ugoira and novels, and it cannot change the R-18 setting.
pixiv for artists: Requests, FANBOX and the money rules
pixiv itself pays artists through one feature, Requests, a commission system where fans pay for a work made to order. The minimum request price is 3,000 yen, pixiv keeps 10% of profits, and payouts go to a Japanese bank account or PayPal, processed within 5 business days of the 20th of the following month. Balances under 5,000 yen wait until requested or transfer automatically after about 180 days. PayPal has been suspended as a payment method for Requests since March 21, 2024.
Monthly fan plans live on pixivFANBOX, pixiv's sister service, which charges a 12.9% fee on R-18 pages. In November 2022 pixiv announced that from December 15, 2022 paid transactions on BOOTH, FANBOX and Requests would be barred for themes card networks' brand-protection rules cover, among them incest, bestiality and non-consensual acts. Alternatives to pixiv
