What itch.io is

itch.io is an open marketplace run by itch corp. It calls itself an open marketplace for independent game creators, but comics are one of its classifications, and adult comic artists use it as their own storefront. Anyone can upload; the creator sets the price, writes the page and keeps the rights. The creator FAQ: You will always fully own your content.

That makes itch.io different from a publisher like FAKKU. Nobody licenses or edits the comics. You buy a porn comic from the person who drew it, and the page, tags and quality are whatever they made them.

Who itch.io suits

itch.io fits readers who want indie Western adult comics, gay, furry and fetish work, or doujinshi-style comics by self-published artists, and who like owning files. It also suits creators who want to sell without a subscription platform taking a fixed cut.

It is weaker for anyone who wants a curated store or a reading app. There is no app for comics, tagging varies page by page, and the rules for paid adult work changed suddenly once already.

The Adult tag page lists related tags: Erotic, NSFW, Gay, Furry, Romance, Yaoi, Bara, Doujinshi and Webcomic. Most of the work is Western indie comics, some in a manga style, with 3D comics among them. Price filters on the NSFW page cover Free, On Sale, Paid, $5 or less and $15 or less. Comics arrive as whatever the creator uploaded: PDF, image archives, or an HTML version that reads in the browser. The creator FAQ says itch.io lets users download the games exactly as you uploaded them. No modifications are made to the files you upload. The same applies to comics.

Free and pay-what-you-want adult comics

Free reading here is genuine. 218 NSFW comics are free, and many paid ones are pay-what-you-want, where the creator sets a minimum and you can pay more. Free comics can be browsed and downloaded without an account. Whether a paid purchase needs one was not tested. Other free legal sources are on free porn comics sites.

Prices

Each comic has its own price. On-sale NSFW comics range from $1 to $8.99. There is no reader subscription, no coins and no credits. itch.io places no ads on creators' pages.

Refund rules for buyers were not found in the creator documentation, so ask the creator or itch.io support before buying something expensive.

The 2025 NSFW delisting, with dates

itch.io's adult section went through a sharp change in July 2025. The sequence, from itch.io's own posts:

• July 11, 2025: the Australian group Collective Shout writes to card networks and payment companies about adult games on Steam and itch.io. The date comes from press; itch.io's post names the campaign.
• July 24: itch.io deindexes all adult NSFW content from browse and search after scrutiny from our payment processors. Pages stay reachable by link and stay in buyers' libraries.
• July 25: pages flagged as sensitive with tags such as porn, adult, hentai, erotic or sex are blocked for UK visitors under the Online Safety Act, until itch.io adopts an age-verification provider (announced July 27).
• July 28: an addendum suspends Stripe payments for 18+ content "for the foreseeable future" and promises stricter age-gating.
• July 31: free adult pages, set to "No Payments", become eligible for browse again. Paid content is to be reintroduced "slowly", and every NSFW page must complete a content-warnings step.

No dated itch.io announcement says when paid adult comics came back. Paid NSFW comics are listed in browse, though, with 903 among the top sellers. Stripe's position stands: it cannot support content designed for sexual gratification. Which processor now takes cards on adult pages is not visible without starting a purchase. Free vs paid adult comics: two sets of rules

The base adult policy is broad: Fictional, illustrated, and rendered content is generally fine, assuming it's legal. It bans sexual images of real people, realistic AI images of real people, glorified sexual violence, and Depictions of minors, minor-presenting, or suggested minors in a sexual context, which ends in account suspension.

Paid work faces a second list. The creator FAQ prints themes it says card processing networks prohibit, and itch.io cannot sell work containing them:

Non-consensual content (real or implied); Underage or "barely legal" themes; Incest or pseudo-incest content; Bestiality or animal-related; Rape, coercion, or force-related; Sex trafficking implications; Revenge porn / voyeur / hidden cam; Fetish involving bodily waste or extreme harm

A free comic only has to meet the base policy. A paid one also has to avoid every theme on that list, so a theme from that list can only appear, if at all, in a free comic. Since the July 2025 changes, a page counts as adult NSFW when "Contains sensitive material" is ticked and it carries an adult tag such as porn, mature, lewd, erotic, hentai, fetish or eroge.

The date-of-birth gate

Opening the NSFW comics pages brings up "You must be 18+ to view this content" with Month, Day and Year selectors and a "Remember my setting for this browser" box. It is a self-declared date of birth; no ID is asked. UK visitors do not get the gate: adult pages are blocked for them outright. The minimum age in itch.io's general terms was not checked.

Reading on a phone

There is no itch.io app for buying or reading comics on iPhone or Android. The itch desktop app is built for games. On a phone, you buy in the browser and open the downloaded file in a reader app. Downloaded files are yours, and purchases stay in your itch.io library even when a page is deindexed. Selling adult comics on itch.io

itch.io costs nothing to join. Its revenue share is open: the creator chooses what percentage goes to itch.io, and the default is 10%. Payment processing comes on top. itch.io's own worked example: $10 - ($10 * 0.1) - $0.30 - ($10 * 0.029) = $8.41, so a $10 comic leaves the artist $8.41 at default settings.

Creators either take payments directly into their own PayPal or Stripe, or let itch.io collect and pay out through PayPal or Payoneer. Collected payouts need at least $5.00 and go through a staff review of at least 7 days, usually 10 to 14. Stripe will not process sexually explicit sales. NSFW pages must be marked as sensitive, tagged, and have their content warnings filled in before they can be indexed.

Pros and cons

Alternatives to itch.io

For 3D adult comics as downloads, Affect3D runs a store with work from about 200 artists. For original erotic comics on a subscription, Filthy Figments and Slipshine are long-running members sites. Following artists directly works on Patreon, which allows drawn sexual work on paid Adult/18+ pages after ID checks.

For hentai manga, FAKKU and Irodori Comics sell licensed English editions, with Irodori's as DRM-free PDFs. Free art posted by artists themselves is on Newgrounds, under its A rating. All the services we cover are on the platforms hub.
