What is BookWalker?
BookWalker is an English ebook store for manga, light novels, webtoons and audiobooks. Its About page says it is Operated by M12 Media LLC (part of the KADOKAWA Group)
and claims a growing catalog of more than 76,000+ officially licensed titles
from publishers including Yen Press, Kodansha and VIZ Media. The home page has tabs for Manga, Webtoons, Novels and Audiobooks, and a release calendar.
Long-time readers knew it as BOOK☆WALKER Global at global.bookwalker.jp. That address now redirects to bookwalker.com, accounts had to be migrated, and the old Points were converted: 1 Point is now treated as 100 Coins
. The current iOS app, "BookWalker: Manga & Novels", was first released in March 2026.
Who BookWalker suits
BookWalker suits buyers of licensed English manga volumes, mature-rated and ecchi series included, who are fine with DRM and want a store backed by a big Japanese publisher. It is a mainstream manga shop with an adult filter. Readers looking for explicit hentai manga should look at FAKKU or Irodori Comics, which publish it openly.
Does BookWalker have adult or hentai manga?
It has mature and ecchi manga; explicit hentai was not seen. The support page on mature content describes a setting for Adult titles intended for mature audiences
, hidden by default and enabled per device in account settings. The Mature label also covers mainstream series such as Jujutsu Kaisen, so it is a broad rating and does not mean explicit.
The Ecchi collection lists 9,687 books, with 1,937 of them hidden by the default content restrictions. The genre filter on collection pages offers Action, Boys Love, Comedy, Drama, Fantasy, Isekai, Josei, Mature, Romance, Seinen, Shoujo, Shounen and Yuri. What separates ecchi from hentai is explained in what ecchi means, and where adult manga beyond ecchi is sold is covered on our adult manga page.
Whether any explicit title sits behind the mature setting could not be checked, since the setting needs a signed-in account. BookWalker publishes no statement on censorship, and its catalog is the publishers' own English editions.
How to show mature titles
- Sign in to bookwalker.com. The content restrictions page reads "SIGN IN TO ACCESS THIS PAGE" otherwise.
- Open the content restrictions settings.
- Enable mature content. The setting applies per device, so repeat it on every phone, tablet or browser you use.
The terms set the age: The Service is not targeted towards nor intended for use by individuals under the age of 18.
No ID check is described.
Free manga on BookWalker
A Free Reads collection offers a growing collection of free-to-read stories
, and some series have free chapters. That is the free tier. Everything else is paid in coins.
BookWalker coins and prices
There is no subscription. The coin packs are a one-time purchase, not a subscription
, and the terms fix the value: Each Coin equals US$0.01 (one cent).

Source: bookwalker.com. Prices change with region, promotions and the store you buy through.
The web store also sells 199, 299, 699, 2,999 and 6,999-coin packs at the same one-cent rate. From our European connection the web prices showed no currency symbol, while the terms define coins in US dollars; the iOS packs run from $0.99 to $99.99. A one-cent coin keeps the arithmetic honest: a price in coins reads directly as cents, with no bonus tiers to decode. Purchased coins never expire. Promotional coins do, and coin-back campaigns (1% in one example) hand some back after a purchase.
Manga sells by volume and, for some series, by chapter. Pre-orders exist, and an Auto-buy option buys new volumes of a series as they release. Auto-buy is the only thing that charges you without a click each time; turn it off on the series page or in the Auto Buy list. How coin systems compare across platforms is on our coin system glossary entry.
Downloads and DRM
BookWalker's downloads are locked. The support page says After purchasing an eBook, you can download a small .lcpl file from your Library.
That file is a Readium LCP license, and The actual EPUB file is encrypted and cannot be opened, converted, or extracted as a normal EPUB.
BookWalker lists Thorium Reader and FBReader among the third-party apps that open it.
So you can read purchases outside BookWalker's own app, offline once downloaded, but only in an LCP-capable reader, and you cannot turn them into plain files. Stores that sell DRM-free files instead are on our DRM-free downloads page.
Offline reading inside BookWalker's own app is unclear. The support FAQ says We will be adding this feature soon
, while the iOS store text claims it, so check the app before relying on it. A wider look at offline options is in how to read manga offline.

Refunds and your account
BookWalker's support page is blunt: Due to the nature of digital content, eBooks audiobooks and coin packs are non-refundable once purchased.
The only exception is where the law requires one. Since there is no subscription, there is nothing to cancel except Auto-buy.

Final verdict
Verdict
BookWalker is a solid place to buy licensed English manga, ecchi and mature-rated series included, with coin math as simple as it gets at one cent a coin. It is not an adult store: the mature filter covers mainstream series too, no hentai was seen, every file is DRM-locked and nothing is refundable. Buy here for mainstream and ecchi volumes, and go to FAKKU or Irodori for explicit work.
