In short
- Adult manga includes seinen, josei, ecchi, adult romance, BL and yuri titles with mature ratings. Hentai is the explicit end only.
- MangaPlaza (US only) hides 18+ shelves behind a toggle; BookWalker hides mature titles until you change a setting while signed in.
- Manta and INKR read well in an app, but Manta's 18+ full versions open only in a browser.
- Store apps are rated 13+ to 18+; the mature shelves live on the websites.
What counts as adult manga
The label stretches over several things that Japanese publishing keeps apart. Seinen and josei are demographics: Anime News Network defines seinen as manga aimed at adult men and josei as manga aimed at women. Seinen is a magazine category and carries no explicitness rating, so a seinen series is not automatically sexual.
Ecchi is sexual humor or light sexual themes without outright pornography. Boys' love (BL) is the Japanese publishing term for male/male romance aimed at women, and it can mean either romance or graphic sex; girls' love and yuri cover stories between women. Adult romance (TL in MangaPlaza's wording) is a store shelf, and MangaPlaza tags every title on it Mature (18+).
Hentai sits at the far end: sexually explicit work. The difference matters because stores sort by it. A reader who wants a mature-rated thriller or an adult BL series does not need a hentai publisher, and a hentai publisher does not stock either. The explicit side has its own page, hentai manga, and the whole group is mapped on the manga hub.

Counts are from the stores' own pages.
MangaPlaza is the place for adult romance and BL. Points are a cent each (100 points = $1), and the adult listings seen showed prices like USD 1.99 / 199 points (the listing does not say chapter or volume). At that price the $6.99 Premium month equals about 3.5 purchases. Premium opens only chapters carrying the Premium icon, so check the icon on the title before relying on it. There is a 7-day trial, once per user and payment method, and cancelling happens on the website only (My Account, Premium Membership Details). Purchased points expire after 36 months. The store does not describe whether adult titles are censored.
BookWalker sells licensed English volumes from mainstream publishers. It has no subscription, only coins at one cent each (99 coins for $0.99 up to 4,999 for $49.99), and purchased coins do not expire. Purchases are final. Its ebook downloads are encrypted LCP files for reader apps such as Thorium Reader and FBReader; the help page says they cannot be opened or converted as normal EPUBs. Mature titles are hidden until a signed-in reader enables them, per device, in account settings.
Manta started as a manhwa app, and its manga tab was added in April 2026 (the exact launch date is unconfirmed). The Standard membership is $4.99 for one month, $12.99 for three, $49.90 for twelve, and single episodes cost Gems. The app builds are edited to their age rating; the complete 18+ editions are marked Full ver. and open only in a browser for adults who gave an age over 18 at sign-up, an age Manta says cannot be changed afterwards.
INKR runs coins at about 6.2 cents each on iOS ($1.99 for 32) and a $4.99 INKR Extra plan that allows downloads. Its Mature section warns of violence, sex, nudity or strong language, then asks for sign-in, so we have not seen what it holds and do not say what is on it.
Ranked picks are on best adult manga sites, and two of these stores have their own reviews: MangaPlaza adult manga and BookWalker manga.
How stores rate and hide mature titles
The hiding is not a quirk of one store; it follows from rules the app stores set. Apple's App Review Guideline 1.1.4 bans overtly sexual or pornographic material, and Guideline 1.2 allows an app showing content from a web service to include incidental mature content only if it is hidden by default and shown only when the user turns it on via the service's website. Guideline 2.3.8 requires icons and screenshots to suit a 4+ rating. Google Play lets a book catalogue carry sexual titles only as a minor fraction of the catalogue, and an app set to 18 and over can use Restrict Minor Access to block under-18 accounts.
The ratings people see follow. Since July 2025 Apple uses 4+, 9+, 13+, 16+ and 18+. BookWalker's iOS listing reads 18+ (the lookup API says 17+) and its Google Play listing 13+. Manta's App Store listing is 16+ and Play is 13+. INKR is 13+ on both. The mature shelves therefore sit on the websites, and MangaPlaza ships no app at all.
For a reader the practical sequence is the same on each: make an account, confirm you are an adult by a toggle or a birthdate, and switch the content setting on, often from the website only. None of these is a document check.

Adult manga versus hentai
If the title is a mature-rated mainstream series or an adult romance, start with the four stores above. If you want explicit doujinshi or magazine chapters in English, FAKKU and Irodori Comics are the licensed sources; FAKKU tags titles Uncensored, Mosaics or Whiteout and Irodori sells DRM-free PDFs. How to find hentai manga covers the search side, and mature content ratings explains how rating labels work across comics. If the app is the point, see adult manga apps.
FAQ
What is the difference between adult manga and hentai?
Adult manga is any manga for adult readers, including seinen and josei series, ecchi, adult romance and BL. Hentai is the explicit subset, and it is mainly sold by FAKKU and Irodori Comics.
How do I turn on mature content on BookWalker?
Sign in, open account settings and enable mature content for the device. BookWalker's support page says mature titles stay hidden until a signed-in reader does this.
Can I read 18+ manga on MangaPlaza outside the US?
MangaPlaza's terms say the service is only available for use in the United States. From the EU the home page showed a maintenance page during our check, which may be a geo-block.
Why are the 18+ editions only on the website?
Apple and Google restrict explicit material in apps. Manta says that because of app store policies certain series cannot be offered in the app, and it points readers to a web browser for the full versions.
