How to read adult comics on mobile

Most people find adult comics on mobile the hard way: they install the app, search for a series, and get an edited version or nothing at all. That is by design, and the services are open about it. The phone's browser is the answer for streaming services; a reader app is the answer for files you own. The other guides cover offline reading and payments.

Why the store apps never carry 18+ editions

Five services, five help pages or replies, one reason:

• Tappytoon: Due to Apple and Google platform policies, steamy comics are available only on our website and mobile website.
• Lezhin, replying on its App Store listing: Due to Apple's policy, mature content cannot be provided on apps. Therefore, unfortunately we do not provide any mature content in our app.
• Manta: Due to app store policies and regulations, we're limited in how certain series can be offered, with the advice to open Manta in a web browser.
• Tapas: To comply with the Terms of Use for both the iOS and the Android app, the Mature section is unavailable within the app.
• Toomics: we are unable to support any kind of adult content within our app due to the policies of both the Google Play Store and the Apple App Store.

The store rules behind those answers are short. Apple's guideline 1.1.4 bans Overtly sexual or pornographic material, and Google Play does not allow content or services intended to be sexually gratifying. Google's exception for book catalogs allows sexual titles only as a minor fraction of the catalog and excludes porn outright. The app ratings show the result: Toomics and Lezhin are rated 12+ on the App Store, Tappytoon and Manta 17+, Tapas 16+. A 12+ app is not where the explicit editions live.

Read in the mobile browser

Every service above runs the full catalog on its mobile website. The steps are the same everywhere, only the name of the switch changes:

1. Open the service's website in Safari or Chrome, not the app.
2. Log in. Tappytoon, Lezhin, TOPTOON Plus and Tapas only show adult editions to a logged-in account.
3. Find the 18+ switch: "mature mode" on Tappytoon, the 18+ content mode next to the coin icon on Lezhin, the Mature section on Tapas, Family Safe mode on Toomics.
4. Confirm your age when asked. On Tapas that means typing a birthdate; on Manta the age you entered at sign-up decides it.
5. Read in the browser. On Tapas, the Mature version is a separate series from the all-ages one in the app, bought separately.

Some services never made a store app at all, so the browser is the only option and nothing is hidden from it: Honeytoon and MangaPlaza are browser-only, FAKKU has no iPhone app, and no global TOPTOON app turned up in US store searches. Watch the wallet on services that sell coins in both places. Lalatoon says you cannot combine coins purchased on the Web and on the APP, so coins bought in its app will not open the web's 18+ editions.

Lezhin Comics PLUS, the official Android APK

One service offers an app with the adult catalog: Lezhin. Its Lezhin Comics PLUS page says Access All R-Rated Content! and LEZHIN COMICS PLUS IS ONLY AVAILABLE ON ANDROID. It also promises Download Titles & Read Offline and Better Coin Deals!. It comes from lezhinus.com as an APK, so Android has to allow installs from that source, and it is not on Google Play. There is no iPhone equivalent; iPhone readers use the website.

No other adult webtoon service in our research publishes an official APK. Treat any other "18+ APK" for these services as unofficial. That includes the aggregator front-end apps that rank for "hentai app" searches, which pull comics from unlicensed sites.

Reader apps for files you bought

Hentai manga and erotic comics bought as files do not need the store's app at all. Irodori Comics sells DRM-free PDFs at 3200 pixels tall, FAKKU's book editions download as PDF or ZIP files, and Iron Circus and itch.io sell DRM-free downloads. Any of these opens in a local reader:

All of them open CBZ, and all but Mihon open PDF. Perfect Viewer and Panels also read right to left for manga and have a vertical mode for webtoon-style files. Mihon ships with nothing to read and its local source opens your own files; our Mihon page explains why we cover only that use. The full comparison is on adult comics apps, and the lock features are compared on private library.

For reading without a connection, see reading manga offline. App picks by format are on adult webtoon apps and the best hentai manga apps.
