Content Rules for Adult Comic Creators

Patreon allows explicit drawn comics on pages marked Adult/18+, behind the paywall, after ID verification, and bans incest, non-consent and any character who does not read as an adult in every format. SubscribeStar, pixivFANBOX, Fantia, Ci-en and Skeb have their own lists, and most of the strictest lines trace back to card networks and payment processors, which the platforms say in writing.

In short

  • Patreon: explicit drawn comics are allowed on Adult/18+ pages behind the paywall, after government ID and selfie checks. Incest (step relations included), non-consent (hypnosis and drugging named) and characters who could read as under 18 are banned even in drawings.
  • SubscribeStar's adult site went fictional-only on 2026-03-11 and pre-screens every post, with bans close to Patreon's.
  • pixivFANBOX, Fantia, Ci-en and Skeb require Japanese-style mosaics. FANBOX hides drawn work whose tags point at banned themes and suspended old posts in September 2026.
  • Gumroad, Ko-fi, WEBTOON Canvas, Tapas and GlobalComix do not take explicit comics at all.
  • The platforms name their payment processors as the reason for the strictest rules.

These rules change often, sometimes overnight, so check the live page before you publish anything on the edge of a list; the quotes here are from each platform's policy pages. For where the money goes once a comic passes, see how comic platforms pay creators; the rest of our creator section covers each platform separately.

Patreon adult comics rules

Patreon allows sexual comics as long as the people in them are not real. Its Community Guidelines, finalized on 2026-03-16, say:

Works depicting sexual activity between non-real subjects (for example in animated, illustrated, written, or audio works) and that comply with Patreon's other guidelines are permitted on pages categorized as Adult/18+.

Where the work sits is part of the rule. Adult/18+ works must reside behind a Patreon subscription paywall, and may only be accessible by the creator's paying members. The profile image, banner, tier descriptions and posts open to free members must be free of nudity (real or animated) sexual activity, or any sexually explicit works, and a separate help article adds that Nudity and sexually explicit material are never allowed in previews. A comic artist can tease with a cropped or blurred panel, never with an explicit page.

Themes Patreon bans in drawn work

The themes trip up more hentai and adult comic artists than nudity does, because they apply to drawings as much as to photos:

Sexualized depictions of incest are not permitted in any works, regardless of how the works were created (e.g. real, hand-drawn, cartoon, text-based, hyperrealistic, AI or digitally-generated, among others).

The incest definition includes full, half, or step siblings and step-parents. Cousins, in-laws and spouses are allowed in drawn work on Adult/18+ pages. Sexual violence is banned in animated, illustrated, etc. imagery and in Role-play or fantasy scenarios involving sexual violence, and non-consent covers coerced consent (e.g. under the influence of drugs or alcohol, hypnosis, blackmail). Sex with real-world animal species is banned in every format, while anthropomorphic and furry characters and mythological creatures are permitted on Adult/18+ pages. AI generators for adult imagery are banned as well.

How Patreon judges a drawn character's age

When creating Adult/18+ works, including animated or illustrated works, the physical appearance and characteristics of subjects must be unmistakably interpreted to be adults and not minors.

Patreon lists the factors it weighs: Physical development and physical features of the subject, Context provided with the imagery (e.g. title, description, tags, etc.) and Material objects or settings traditionally associated with specific minor age ranges (e.g. school settings, bottles/rattles, cribs, etc.). A stated age in the caption does not settle it.

ID checks, regions and app limits

Adult/18+ creators submit a government-issued ID and a selfie. Patreon's FAQ says why: Payment processors like Mastercard and Visa require Patreon to have all creators sharing sexually explicit creations or creations that include nudity verify that they are over the age of 18. Fans only self-attest: they switch on "See 18+ creators" and confirm their age in a pop-up. Adult/18+ pages cannot use Patreon Video, their image previews are blurred, and fans in regions whose law prohibits adult works cannot support them at all. Patreon names no countries.

The current wording took shape in three steps: a 2024-03-12 update that renamed the adult category and detailed its subcategories, a proposal on 2025-12-04, and the final version on 2026-03-16. Our Patreon guide for adult creators covers fees and payouts.

SubscribeStar

SubscribeStar's adult site rewrote its Prohibited Content page on 2026-03-11. It now opens: SubscribeStar is a platform designed for digital artists and creators publishing fictional works, including 2D/3D art, animation, comics, and written content. Real people are out under any circumstances. Creators pass the KYC and profile screening process before publishing, and every post goes through pre-screening.

The bans read close to Patreon's, with sharper wording on age:

Any depiction of underage or underage-appearing characters in sexualized circumstances, regardless of artistic style. Sexualized depictions of characters from films, games, anime, comics, or other media that are canonically underaged, even if such characters are aged-up by a textual 18+ statement. Characters portrayed with body proportions and features commonly associated with minors. For moderation purposes, visual appearance takes precedence over written disclaimers.

Incest is banned regardless of whether the characters are fictional or animated, and non-consent includes consent removed through mind control or hypnosis, drugs, intoxication, or incapacitation. The page also bans extreme gore, fetishized bodily waste, extreme bodily fluids, explicit degradation imagery, live streams of any kind and links to third-party sites with prohibited content.

pixivFANBOX and pixiv

FANBOX allows R-18 work once the creator turns on "Posting R-18 contents", with mosaics required (at least 4 px, or 1/100 of the long side on larger images). Its Guidelines, in force since 2022-12-15, split banned themes into two tiers. "Prohibited Items" are live-action or photo-realistic works showing Sexual exploitation or sexual abuse of a minor, Incest, Bestiality, Rape (or any other non-consensual sexual behavior) or Non-consensual mutilation of a person or body part; these are deleted. "Items Requiring Revision" are drawn works where the same themes show in the art or in the title, tags and captions; these are hidden until revised. AI-generated work has been banned since 2023-07-25.

Enforcement tightened in 2026. FANBOX asked every creator on 2026-08-27 to recheck their posts, warning that such content being public FANBOXにおける主要な決済手段が利用停止となる可能性を含んでおります (could lead to FANBOX's main payment methods being stopped). Around 2026-09-25 creators reported a wave of suspensions, with notices citing the payment processor; tags such as hypnosis, brainwashing and kidnapping were the common triggers, and posts several years old were hit. FANBOX publishes no statement that every character must be an adult; its Guidelines ban Content depicting sexual acts involving minors instead.

pixiv itself requires posters to be 18 or over and to set the R-18 restriction (a tag alone restricts nothing). Accounts set to the US or UK have been under extra rules since 2024-04-25, extended to Australia, Canada, the EU and New Zealand on 2025-11-10. For those accounts pixiv bans content showing the exploitation of any person, whether real or simulated (including AI-generated), whose age is below the greater of ... 18 years old and content depicting non-consensual sexual activity or incest, and may hide such works in those regions.

Fantia

Fantia allows adult posts from creators who are 18 or over and have passed its eKYC photo-ID check, which every creator takes, all-ages included. Uncensored images are banned outright. Genitals and penetration need thick black or white bars or an opaque mosaic that stays unrecognizable even at thumbnail size, and PSD or CLIP files may not hide an uncensored layer. AI-generated data is banned in all paid content since 2023-05-23.

Fantia's 2026 mosaic episode shows how fast a rule can move. It announced a stricter, retroactive standard on 2026-05-19, effective 2026-05-25. Four days after that took effect it apologized and reverted drawn work to the old standard (2026-05-29). A statement of 2026-06-25 explained that police had flagged some live-action content under Penal Code Article 175, and the stricter rule now applies to live action only. That change came from Japanese obscenity law and not from a card network. Fantia's guideline has no age rule for drawn characters; its terms ban sexual content about real people under 18.

Ci-en

Ci-en, DLsite's fan-support site, requires an R-18 rating for adult work, keeps adult images out of icons and covers, and bans live-action sexual content and AI-led content. Its compliance policy has the most specific under-18 rule of the Japanese platforms:

対象が18歳未満と受け止められる可能性が高い表記(小学生、中学生、園児、幼児、幼女、児童等)及びアイテム(ランドセル、園児服、スモック、名札(何年何組)等の画像)

That bans wording and items likely to make a subject read as under 18, naming school grades, school bags, smocks and class name tags. Mosaics follow the same 1/100 rule as pixiv, and transparent mosaics do not count as concealment.

Skeb

Skeb allows NSFW commissions for drawn work when the request is flagged, judged by Whether or not it is fine to display a poster on the street. Censorship under Japanese law is required, PSDs with a removable censor layer are rejected at delivery, and live-action NSFW, AI data and 3D models are banned. Its terms still list 露骨な性的表現 (explicit sexual expression) among prohibited acts, so the line sits somewhere between the guideline and the terms. We found no Skeb statement on the age of depicted characters.

itch.io

itch.io says Fictional, illustrated, and rendered content is generally fine, assuming it's legal, and bans Depictions of minors, minor-presenting, or suggested minors in a sexual context. For paid work it adds a list of themes it cannot sell because of card networks, including Non-consensual content (real or implied), Incest or pseudo-incest content, Rape, coercion, or force-related and Fetish involving bodily waste or extreme harm. Since 2025-07-31 adult pages must complete content warnings to be indexed.

Platforms that refuse explicit comics

PlatformWhat the rule says
GumroadLists "Adult comics with nudity or sexual acts" as not allowed; only cosplay or pin-up work, flagged adults-only, remains
Ko-fiBans pornography "across illustrative, video, audio content", censored versions included; allows "lightly sensual nudity" with the NSFW tag
WEBTOON Canvas"Content that contains nudity or intended to be sexually gratifying is not allowed", Mature rating included
Tapas"Any and all content intended for sexual gratification is not allowed"; the Mature section takes no submissions
GlobalComixRefuses "explicitly sexual stories (such as Hentai)"; nudity outside sexual acts is allowed

Newgrounds sits at the other end: it takes adult art under an A rating and asks artists to rate censored porn A as well. Its art guidelines reject the stated-age defense in plain words: If your art looks like a child but you claim they are 18+ in the comments, it will still be treated as art that looks like a child.

Payment processors set most of these rules

Read the reasons the platforms give and the same names keep coming back. Patreon's adult verification exists To comply with payment processor requirements. SubscribeStar's 2026 rewrite says certain content is not permitted To comply with legal requirements, payment processors, and acquiring bank standards. Gumroad's adult content article starts: In accordance with the policies of our payment processing partners, including Stripe and PayPal, we do not allow sales of sexually explicit content. Ko-fi says creators can't use Ko-fi in ways that go against PayPal's acceptable use policy or Stripe's prohibited businesses terms.

The Japanese platforms say it too. FANBOX's notice of 2025-06-09 raised the R-18 fee from 10% to 12.9% from 2025-09-01 because of クレジットカード会社や決済代行事業者からの要請 (requests from card companies and payment processors). Its brand-protection list of 2022, the one behind "Prohibited Items", came from card network rules. Fantia lost Visa and Mastercard on 2024-05-21, and Ci-en takes only JCB cards. itch.io wrote on 2025-07-24: Recently, we came under scrutiny from our payment processors regarding the nature of some content hosted on itch.io.

Further up the chain, Stripe's prohibited list names Pornography and other mature audience content (including literature, imagery and other media) designed for the purpose of sexual gratification. Mastercard's 2021 rules ask banks with adult merchants for documented consent, age checks and content review before publication. In 2025 Mastercard denied evaluating any game and said we allow all lawful purchases on our network; Valve told press that the pressure reached it through processors and acquiring banks. Either way, the rule a comic artist meets is the one the platform's processor will accept.

FAQ

Does Patreon allow hentai?

Yes, on pages categorized Adult/18+, behind the paywall, after ID and selfie verification. The work must avoid incest, non-consent, real-world bestiality and any character whose appearance and context could read as under 18, and public previews must carry no nudity.

Is drawn incest allowed on Patreon if the characters are fictional?

No. Patreon bans sexualized incest "in any works, regardless of how the works were created", hand-drawn included, and counts step-siblings and step-parents. Cousins, in-laws and spouses are permitted in drawn work on Adult/18+ pages.

Why did FANBOX suspend an old post?

Since its 2026-08-27 notice FANBOX has been enforcing "Items Requiring Revision": drawn work whose art, title, tags or captions point at non-consent, incest and similar themes. Creators reported suspensions of posts several years old around 2026-09-25, with hypnosis and kidnapping tags among the triggers. Re-publishing needs staff review.

Can I post NSFW comics on WEBTOON Canvas if I rate them Mature?

No. The Mature rating hides a series from readers under 18 but does not lift the ban on nudity and sexually gratifying content.

Does SubscribeStar allow hypnosis or mind control comics?

Not in a sexual context. Its rules count consent removed through "mind control or hypnosis, drugs, intoxication, or incapacitation" as non-consent, which is banned.
