In short
- Gumroad bans explicit drawn work. "Adult comics with nudity or sexual acts" and art "where the content's focus is sexual gratification" are named as not allowed.
- A narrow NSFW lane remains: non-explicit pin-up and cosplay-focused work, flagged adults-only so only buyers who opt in see it.
- Products sold before the ban stay in buyers' libraries, and flagged accounts still get their balance paid out.
- Fees are 10% + $0.50 per direct sale plus card processing, or 30% on marketplace sales.
Gumroad does not allow porn comics, hentai or any other sexually explicit drawn work, and it says so in writing. The help article "Adult content on Gumroad" lists "Adult comics with nudity or sexual acts" among the things it will not sell, next to sketches and artwork focused on sexual gratification and animated pornography. What adult-adjacent artists still use it for is narrow: non-explicit pin-up or cosplay-style work behind an adults-only flag, and the safe-for-work side of their business, such as art books, brushes and tutorials.
What Gumroad is
Gumroad, run by Gumroad, Inc., is a storefront for digital products and memberships. A creator uploads files, sets a price (fixed, free or pay-what-you-want) and sells through a profile, direct links or Gumroad's Discover marketplace. Memberships are supported too. Since January 1, 2025 Gumroad has been the merchant of record and handles sales tax. There is no monthly fee.
Until March 2024 Gumroad allowed most NSFW art. The tightening that month, reported by TechCrunch as Gumroad no longer allowing most NSFW art, is why the platform still comes up in searches for adult content.
Who it suits now
Gumroad's best fit is safe-for-work art products: art books, brushes, tutorials and the like. An adult comic artist can still use it for those, as a separate shop for products with no sexual content. For a reader it is no longer a place to buy adult comics, though anything bought before the ban stays in the buyer's library.
What Gumroad allows and what it bans
The help article opens with the rule, and with the reason Gumroad gives for it, its payment processors:
In accordance with the policies of our payment processing partners, including Stripe and PayPal, we do not allow sales of sexually explicit content.
It then applies the rule across formats: If your products can be understood as being primarily for sexual purposes, then they are not eligible to be sold on Gumroad. To be clear, this includes all types of media: photography, videos, animations, illustrations, written media, audiobooks, and audio products.
The named examples include:
Adult comics with nudity or sexual acts
Sketches/artwork where the content's focus is sexual gratification
Animated pornographic videos or animated nudity or characters portrayed in sexual situations
The Prohibited Products page, last revised September 16, 2026, backs this with "sexually-oriented or pornographic content (including but not limited to adult books ...)", and in the same entry bans content of any format that features characters who are minors, are depicted as minors, or are suggested to be minors in any sexual or sensual context
. It warns that the list "may change abruptly and without notice".
The adults-only lane
The article leaves room for some NSFW-adjacent work. It gives cosplay/pinup creators whose content is focused more on cosplay
as an allowed example, and says allowed products must be flagged:
If you are allowed to sell your work on Gumroad, you must flag it as NSFW ... Switch on the toggle indicating that the product is only meant for adults. This ensures your content is only shown to customers who opt in to see adult content.
The toggle sits in the product's Share and Discover settings. Gumroad gives no more precise line than "primarily for sexual purposes", so where a pin-up becomes too sexual is Gumroad's call, product by product.
What happens to flagged accounts
Gumroad says it stops sales of the products in question, but unless the content itself is illegal, or the sales are fraudulent, we will absolutely pay out your balance
. Past sales are left alone: those sales will not be affected by changes to these policies. Your customers' libraries will remain intact.

ID checks
Gumroad's processor Stripe asks for identity and address verification once an account has been selling for a while, and US sellers need an SSN. Buyers who want to see flagged adults-only products opt in; Gumroad describes no further age check. The terms require users to be of legal age to form a contract and give no number.
Gumroad fees
- Direct sales through a profile or link: 10% + $0.50 per transaction, with card processing of 2.9% + $0.30 (and PayPal fees) on top.
- Sales through the Discover marketplace: a flat 30%, processing included.
- Once a creator's paid sales pass $20,000 in a calendar month, new direct sales that month are 5% + $0.50.
On a $5 art pack sold by direct link, the fee is $1.00 and card processing $0.445, so the creator keeps about $3.56, or 71%. On a $2 item the fixed charges bite harder: $0.70 plus $0.358 leaves $0.94. When a sale is refunded, Gumroad returns its own fee and keeps only the processing part. Fees on platforms that do allow adult work are on the creator fees page.

Payouts
Gumroad pays to a local bank account in a long list of countries, and to PayPal in USD with a 2% fee where bank payouts are not available. Payoneer, Wise, checks and wire transfers are not supported. The minimum balance is $100, higher in some countries; some third-party sites still quote $10, but the live help page says $100.
Payouts are weekly by default, with daily (for eligible US accounts), monthly or quarterly as options, and include sales up to the previous Friday. On the weekly, monthly and quarterly schedules a sale is held for at least 7 days. US creators can take instant payouts of up to $10,000 for a 3% fee, from $1. The payout options on other platforms are compared on our payout methods page.
How buyers pay and cancel
Gumroad's card statement wording is not published on the pages we read, and whether a buyer can check out without an account was not confirmed. Members cancel from the purchase receipt or from their Library under "Manage membership", or by emailing support@gumroad.com if they cannot reach either. Access runs to the end of the paid term, and the terms say there is no prorated refund for the rest of it.

Alternatives for adult comic artists
An artist moving explicit comics off Gumroad needs a platform that allows them, and the candidates sell in different ways:
- SubscribeStar's adult site is built for NSFW digital artists, sells paid posts and collections as well as subscriptions, and allows explicit drawn and 3D work under its March 2026 theme rules.
- Patreon sells one-off posts, collections and digital products on Adult/18+ pages, behind the paywall, with every preview clean.
- Fantia sells download goods and single back numbers alongside plans, for artists who can work with Japanese mosaic rules and payouts.
- pixivFANBOX suits artists with a pixiv audience, again with mosaics.
itch.io also hosted adult comics, but in July 2025 it deindexed adult NSFW pages from browse and search and suspended Stripe for 18+ pages; free adult pages came back to the index days later, while paid ones have not been announced as restored. Details are on our news page on the itch.io delisting. Ko-fi, the other common storefront, bans pornography in illustrated work too.
The ranked list of places that do allow adult work is on the best platforms for adult comic creators, and the wider set on the creators hub.

In March 2024 Gumroad tightened its rules citing Stripe and PayPal. Products in breach are pulled from sale, but balances are paid out unless the content is illegal or sales are fraudulent, and buyers keep earlier purchases.

Final verdict
Verdict
Gumroad is closed to adult comics and says so in its own help center. Adult artists can still run a safe-for-work shop there for art books, brushes or tutorials, and pin-up artists can try the adults-only toggle at Gumroad's discretion. Explicit comics belong on SubscribeStar, Patreon or one of the Japanese fan-plan sites.
