- Live-action work keeps the stricter standard; drawn work is back on the old rules.
What happened
Fantia, Toranoana's fan club platform for illustrators, manga artists and doujin circles, announced a stricter censorship standard for adult work on May 19, 2026, effective May 25 and applying to past posts as well. Artists objected loudly, and on May 29 Fantia temporarily put drawn work back on the previous rules, as Automaton reported.
On June 25 Fantia apologized and explained. Police had told it that certain content may constitute a violation of Article 175
, and the inquiry concerned live-action content only. The stricter rules now apply to live action; 2D keeps the rules from before the revision. Fantia described its guidelines as self-regulatory standards
that do not completely eliminate or guarantee protection against future legal risks
.

What the rules for drawn work say
The standard that survived is still strict. Fantia requires concealment of all genitals and of penetration, by thick black or white bars or a mosaic heavy enough that nothing can be made out, and the parts must stay unrecognizable even when shrunk to thumbnail size. Uncensored images are banned outright.
What it means
For artists, the episode showed that a platform can change censorship rules retroactively in a week and that the trigger can be the police, not a card network. Fantia has been under payment pressure too: it lost Visa and Mastercard in May 2024 (see the Japanese card cutoffs). For readers outside Japan nothing changed in what they see: Fantia's drawn adult work was censored before and still is.
The law behind mosaics is explained in why hentai is censored. Licensed stores that sell uncensored English editions are on uncensored hentai sites, and platform rules for artists on creator content rules. More stories are on the news page.
FAQ
Did Fantia change its mosaic rules in 2026?
Yes. Stricter rules took effect on May 25, 2026, were rolled back for 2D work on May 29, and now apply only to live-action content.
Why did Fantia change its censorship rules?
Fantia said a police inquiry under Article 175 of Japan's Penal Code, about live-action content, caused the rushed change.
Does Fantia allow uncensored work?
No. Its guidelines ban uncensored images and require bars or mosaics on genitals and penetration.
