How Comic Platforms Pay Creators

You make money drawing NSFW comics through six channels: monthly subscriptions, one-off sales of books or posts, a share of a reading platform's revenue, ad share, tips and commissions. Explicit work is shut out of most of them, so for porn comics the money comes from subscriptions on Patreon, SubscribeStar, pixivFANBOX, Fantia or Ci-en, direct sales, and commissions.

In short

  • Subscriptions carry most explicit comic artists. Patreon and SubscribeStar take 10% plus processing; pixivFANBOX takes 12.9% from R-18 pages, Fantia 12.5% in drawn categories, Ci-en 13% on R-18 plans.
  • One-off sales of finished books or posts work on Patreon, SubscribeStar, Fantia, Ci-en and itch.io, where the default cut is 10%. Affect3D pays 3D comic artists 60% or 70% of each sale.
  • Ad share and reader tips on WEBTOON Canvas and Tapas pay only for work without explicit sex, and Tapas closes on 2027-03-31.
  • Commissions are the fourth route: Skeb keeps 6.8% to 9.8% of a request, pixiv Requests 10% with a 3,000 JPY minimum price.

The question of how to make money drawing NSFW comics has a short answer once you sort the platforms by what they let you post. Gumroad lists Adult comics with nudity or sexual acts among the things it will not sell. Ko-fi bans pornography in illustrated work, WEBTOON Canvas bans nudity even on Mature series, and GlobalComix refuses hentai by name. That leaves a small set of services that pay for explicit drawn work, each with its own way of paying. The rest of our guides for creators take the platforms one at a time.

Subscriptions: the steady income for NSFW comic artists

A subscription page turns readers into monthly backers who pay for access to pages, previews, high-resolution files or early chapters. For adult artists it is the most widely available model, and the five platforms that allow it publish their cut.

Patreon sells monthly, annual and per-creation memberships. Pages published after August 4, 2025 pay a 10% platform fee plus payment processing (2.9% + $0.30 for a US card payment), and older pages on legacy plans keep 5%, 8% or 11% only until the page is unpublished. The rules for adult pages are strict about where the explicit work sits: Patreon's guidelines require Adult/18+ works to reside behind a Patreon subscription paywall, and the profile, banner, tier descriptions and free posts must carry no nudity. Adult/18+ creators can still run free trials on paid tiers.

SubscribeStar's adult site (subscribestar.adult, now branded SubscribeStar.art) calls itself the Number one monetization platform for NSFW digital artists. It charges a 10% service fee plus processing from 3% + $0.30 to 10% + $0.40, and the creator decides whether subscribers cover the processing. Besides subscriptions it handles tips, paid posts, collections and commissions.

The three Japanese platforms bill in yen. pixivFANBOX plans run from 100 to 10,000 JPY a month and the fee for a page set to post R-18 work is 12.9%, so a 1,000 JPY pledge leaves the artist 871 JPY. Fantia plans run from 100 to 100,000 JPY with a 12.5% fee in drawn categories (875 JPY kept from 1,000 JPY). Ci-en, DLsite's fan-support site, allows up to 10 plans per creator at 100 to 100,000 JPY and takes 13% of R-18 plan income, which leaves 870 JPY from 1,000 JPY. FANBOX publishes no tip feature, so its income is the monthly pledge and nothing else.

Billing rhythm matters for a comic posted chapter by chapter. FANBOX charges a new supporter the full plan price on the day they join, then again between the 1st and 5th of each month. Fantia charges a full calendar month with no proration and renews on the 1st. A fan who joins on the 28th for one chapter is paying for a month either way.

Selling finished books, chapters and posts

One-off sales suit an artist who finishes a book and wants to sell it to people who will never subscribe. Patreon lets Adult/18+ creators sell posts, collections and digital products as one-time purchases, with a fee of between 5% and 12% depending on the creator's plan; creators must be on subscription billing to use it. SubscribeStar's payout policy covers paid posts and collections next to subscriptions.

Fantia sells back numbers (past months of a plan), downloads and physical goods. Since 2026-10-22 a fan can buy a back number without joining the plan, which turns a monthly archive into a catalog of single chapters. The buyer pays an 8% service fee on those purchases, on top of the price, while the creator's 12.5% stays the same. Ci-en sells one-off articles (still marked beta) that anyone can buy without a plan, at a 15% fee for both all-ages and R-18.

itch.io is the open storefront of the group. The creator picks how much of each sale goes to itch.io, with 10% as the default, and its own example is $10 - ($10 * 0.1) - $0.30 - ($10 * 0.029) = $8.41. NSFW comics on sale there are priced from $1 to $8.99. The adult side has been unstable: itch.io removed adult pages from browse and search on 2025-07-24 after pressure through its payment processors, suspended Stripe for 18+ pages, and put free adult pages back in browse on 2025-07-31. Paid NSFW comics are listed again, but itch.io has posted no dated announcement saying so, and adult pages stay blocked for UK visitors under the Online Safety Act. Our itch.io delisting timeline keeps the dates.

Affect3D is a curated store for 3D adult comics. Artists apply by email with samples, every product passes a staff review, and the artist receives 60% of each sale as a Regular or Featured vendor or 70% as an Exclusive one. Its comics sell singly, such as one title listed at $12.50 on the home page.

Publishers are a separate door. Iron Circus Comics has a submissions page for book publishing, and Slipshine says it pays its artists a fair market value for their work without publishing rates; it announces open submissions on its home page and social media when it has them.

Revenue pools: paid by pages read

A revenue pool splits a reader subscription among the creators each reader opened that month. GlobalComix runs one: its Gold subscription revenue is split between all creators and publishers the user reads within a month, based on the percentage of pages read, and creators and publishers get 65% to 75%. It also pays out PDF sales and optional donations. For porn comics the FAQ closes the door: explicitly sexual stories (such as Hentai) which are not accepted on GlobalComix. Nudity outside sexual acts is allowed, so the pool can pay a mature series that stops short of sex.

None of the adult webtoon platforms in our research publishes a revenue share for the creators of the series it sells by the episode, so we cannot quote one.

Ad revenue share

Ad share pays by views, and both big webcomic hosts that offer it refuse explicit work. WEBTOON Canvas creators earn 50% from ads displayed on their series. Viewer Ads open at 1,000 subscribers and 40,000 global monthly page views, Reward Ads at 100,000 global monthly page views, and since January 13, 2026 a creator can lock up to six episodes behind Reward Ads. The Canvas guidelines still say Content that contains nudity or intended to be sexually gratifying is not allowed, and the Mature rating does not change that.

Tapas says about 70% of ad revenue goes straight to creators once a series reaches 100 subscribers, but its guidelines ban any content made for sexual gratification and its Mature section takes no submissions. Kakao is shutting Tapas down on 2027-03-31; creators may keep publishing until then (details in our Tapas shutdown report). For an artist with a mature but non-explicit series, ad share is real money. For porn comics it is not an option.

Tips from readers

Tips work best as an extra on a page fans already visit. Fantia pays tips to the creator minus the platform fee, and since 2025-07-03 the buyer pays an 8% service fee on them. Ci-en counts tips inside its monthly-plan bucket, so R-18 tips carry the 13% rate. SubscribeStar accepts tips but says they must not be presented as payment for specific content.

WEBTOON's Super Like program pays creators 70% of net revenue, and net is gross minus a 30% deduction for app and in-app fees, so the creator ends up with about 49% of what the fan paid. It needs 500 Likes on the series and a creator aged 18 or over. Tapas's Support program passed tips (Ink) through at 100% after app-store or web processor fees, but Ink could no longer be bought from 2026-10-01. Ko-fi takes 0% on one-off tips on its free plan, yet its guidelines ban pornography including implied, emulated, censored, and cropped versions, and they also ban using a censored preview to sell the uncensored version somewhere else.

Commissions

Commissions pay per piece and do not depend on a following that renews every month. Skeb is the commission site for Japanese manga and hentai artists, with "comic" as a request genre. The client names the amount, the creator accepts or ignores it, and there are no messages or retakes. Skeb's fee is up to 9.8%, cut to 8.3% or 6.8% by two conditions. Skeb gives 12,000 JPY as the average approved amount for an artwork; at 9.8% that leaves 10,824 JPY, at 6.8% it leaves 11,184 JPY. NSFW requests are allowed when flagged and censored, and payouts go only to a Japanese bank account or Kyash.

pixiv Requests is the paid feature inside pixiv, where most Japanese hentai artists post R-18 work for free. The minimum request price is 3,000 JPY and pixiv keeps 10%. Fantia sells commissions with the 8% buyer fee on top, and SubscribeStar's payout policy lists commissioned artwork.

Explicit work costs more to sell

The same platform often charges adult pages more. pixivFANBOX takes 12.9% from R-18 pages and 10% from all-ages pages; its notice of 2025-06-09 tied the rise to requests from card companies and payment processors. Ci-en takes 13% from R-18 plans and 10% from all-ages ones. SubscribeStar's safe-for-work sister site shows a 5% service fee against 10% on the adult site. Fantia is the exception for drawn work: its 12.5% applies to every non-live-action category, and only live action pays 17.5%.

The full fee table, with a worked $1,000 month on each platform, is on our creator fees page. What each platform bans, quoted from its own rules, is on the content rules page, and the Japanese platforms' bank-only payouts are covered under payout methods.

Which model fits which comic

An artist who posts a page or a chapter at a time fits a subscription: the work keeps arriving and so does the money. An artist who finishes a 40-page book and stops fits one-off sales, on Fantia back numbers, Ci-en one-off articles, Patreon one-time purchases or itch.io. Our comparison of recurring support and per-book sales goes through that choice with the fees for each.

Where you live narrows the list. FANBOX pays only to a Japanese bank account or PayPal, Fantia pays abroad only to permanent overseas residents with 50,000 JPY in sales, and Skeb pays only into Japan. For a Western artist drawing hentai-style comics, that leaves Patreon and SubscribeStar as the subscription pages with no residence or yen hurdle, and pixiv as a free place to post and be found. FAQ

Can you make money drawing porn comics on Patreon?

Yes. Patreon permits sexual work about non-real subjects, drawn comics included, on pages categorized Adult/18+, after ID and selfie verification. The explicit pages must sit behind the paid tier, and Patreon keeps 10% plus processing on pages published after August 4, 2025. Incest, non-consent and characters who read as under 18 are banned in drawn work too.

Does WEBTOON pay creators for mature comics?

WEBTOON Canvas pays 50% of ad revenue and about 49% of what fans spend on Super Likes, but only for work within its guidelines, which ban nudity and sexually gratifying content at every rating. A Mature series with sexual themes and no nudity can earn; an explicit one cannot be posted.

Which platform takes the smallest cut of NSFW comic income?

For commissions, Skeb at 6.8% when both of its conditions are met. For subscriptions on adult pages, Patreon and SubscribeStar both start at 10%, before processing, which they charge separately; FANBOX takes 12.9% from R-18 pages, Fantia 12.5% and Ci-en 13%.

Can artists outside Japan get paid by FANBOX, Fantia or Skeb?

FANBOX pays to PayPal for creators without a Japanese bank account. Fantia pays overseas only to permanent overseas residents whose sales have reached 50,000 JPY. Skeb pays only to a Japanese bank account or Kyash.

Can I still sell adult comics on Gumroad?

No. Gumroad's help article lists Adult comics with nudity or sexual acts as not allowed, citing Stripe and PayPal, and its prohibited list covers pornographic content in any format.
