In short
- Decide how you will charge before you pick a platform: subscriptions suit a comic released page by page, file sales suit a finished book.
- SubscribeStar, Patreon, pixivFANBOX, Fantia, Ci-en and itch.io accept explicit drawn comics; Gumroad, Ko-fi, WEBTOON Canvas and Tapas do not.
- Expect an ID check (Patreon, Fantia, SubscribeStar) and an 18+ setting on every explicit page, and keep public previews clean.
Where to publish adult comics
The best sites for NSFW comic artists split by how they pay. Membership platforms charge fans monthly: SubscribeStar and Patreon in English, pixivFANBOX, Fantia and Ci-en for Japanese readers. Download stores sell a finished comic as a file: itch.io for anyone, Affect3D for 3D artists who are accepted as vendors. Free platforms such as pixiv and Newgrounds carry explicit work at no charge and pay nothing (pixiv has paid commissions through Requests), so artists use them to find readers and send them to a paid page.
| How you charge | Platforms that take explicit comics | What the platform keeps |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly subscription | SubscribeStar, Patreon, pixivFANBOX, Fantia, Ci-en | 10% + processing (SubscribeStar, Patreon); 12.9% R-18 (FANBOX); 12.5% drawn (Fantia); 13% R-18 (Ci-en) |
| Single-book or file sales | itch.io, Patreon one-time purchases, Fantia downloads, Affect3D (3D) | Creator-set, 10% default (itch.io); 40% or 30% (Affect3D) |
| Commissions | Skeb, pixiv Requests | 9.8% to 6.8% (Skeb); 10% (pixiv) |
| Free posting | pixiv, Newgrounds | Nothing; no payment to the artist |

Choose a model first
Subscription
A membership pays every month for as long as fans stay, which suits a serial comic with a steady release rhythm. It also commits you to that rhythm, because fans pay before they see the month's pages: FANBOX charges the full plan price on the day a fan joins, even late in the month, and then at the start of every month. Patreon and SubscribeStar renew monthly (Patreon also has annual plans) and both let explicit creators sell single posts or collections alongside.
Selling finished books
Selling a finished comic as a file means one payment per buyer and no posting schedule. itch.io is the open option: you set the price, or let buyers pay what they want, and choose what share itch.io keeps. Since July 2025 that route has been less certain, because itch.io removed adult pages from search under payment-processor pressure and stopped taking Stripe payments on them; free pages came back within a week, and paid ones are listed again without a dated announcement. Patreon one-time purchases and Fantia downloads are the alternatives on membership platforms.
Free webcomic plus a paid page
The third model runs the comic free and earns from a membership behind it. Newgrounds takes explicit art and comics under its A rating, and pixiv takes R-18 work with mosaics; DeviantArt asks members to tag mature work, but we could not confirm where it allows explicit sex. The paid page then carries the extras: early pages, high-resolution files, uncensored versions where the platform allows them.
Two common setups fail on rules. WEBTOON Canvas bans nudity and content intended to be sexually gratifying
at every rating, and Tapas does not allow content for sexual gratification and closes on March 31, 2027, so neither can host the free half of an explicit comic. Ko-fi bans using a censored preview as a form of paywall
to sell the uncensored version, on Ko-fi or off it.
How the three models compare on income is covered in subscriptions vs pay per chapter and how comic platforms pay creators.

What each platform requires before you post
| Platform | Identity check | Adult setting |
|---|---|---|
| Patreon | Government ID plus a selfie through a third-party vendor, for Adult/18+ pages | Adult/18+ page category; explicit posts paid-only |
| SubscribeStar | KYC and profile screening before publishing; tax form before payout | Adult site; every post screened before it goes live |
| pixivFANBOX | pixiv account; no ID check described | "Posting R-18 contents" switched on in Creator Preferences |
| Fantia | eKYC photo ID for every creator | Adult posting for verified creators 18 and over; staff review of posts |
| Ci-en | viviON ID, 18 and over | R-18 rating; no adult images in icon or cover |
| pixiv | Self-declared date of birth, 18 and over | R-18 restriction set on each work |
| itch.io | None found for publishing | Sensitive-content box, adult tags and content warnings |
| Newgrounds | None found | A rating on adult work |
A few details trip people up. On pixiv, adding an R-18 tag does not restrict the work; the restriction is a separate setting. FANBOX can switch a page to R-18 by itself if it finds adult posts, and since August 25, 2025 switching back to all-ages takes a request to support with the R-18 posts made private first. itch.io has required content warnings on adult pages since July 31, 2025 before it lists them in browse. Newgrounds says artists who keep posting adult work without an A rating may be de-scouted.
Content rules that sink accounts
Explicit content itself is allowed on all of these platforms. Accounts get suspended for what the comic is about, how it is labelled and where the explicit files show up.
The themes come first. Patreon bans incest in drawn work (its definition includes step-parents and step siblings), non-consent including coerced consent (e.g. under the influence of drugs or alcohol, hypnosis, blackmail)
, and bestiality involving real-world species. SubscribeStar bans incest, non-consent including mind control or hypnosis, drugs, intoxication
, and characters who look under 18 whatever their stated age. FANBOX hides drawn work on those themes until it is revised. itch.io will not process sales of work on them. Anthropomorphic and mythological characters are allowed on Patreon's adult pages.
Metadata is read as closely as the art. FANBOX judges drawn work by its titles, tags and captions, and in September 2026 posts three or four years old were suspended over tags such as hypnosis and kidnapping. Patreon weighs a drawn character's age partly on the title, description, tags
. A tag naming a banned theme can get a post hidden even when the art itself would pass.
Public spaces must be clean. Patreon bans nudity in the profile image, banner, tier descriptions, free posts and previews. Ci-en keeps adult images out of icons and covers, and Skeb out of profile icons and headers.
Linking out counts. FANBOX treats sharing a link to uncensored files hosted elsewhere as a terms violation, Ci-en treats linking to banned content as posting it, and SubscribeStar bans links to third-party sites with prohibited content.
Real people and AI are banned in most places. Patreon and SubscribeStar ban explicit work with real people, Patreon extending that to hyperrealistic subjects; pixiv and FANBOX ban photo-realistic sexual images. FANBOX has banned AI-generated content since July 25, 2023, Fantia bans AI data in paid content, Ci-en bans AI-led work and Newgrounds bans AI art.
On the Japanese platforms, missing or thin censoring is its own offence: pixiv may suspend accounts that do not censor properly. The mosaic sizes are on our page about platforms for hentai artists, and every platform's rules side by side are on adult content rules for creators.

From first page to first payout
- Check the comic against your platform's banned themes before anything else: the premise, the character designs, the tags you would use. If it fails on Patreon and SubscribeStar, look at whether a Japanese platform's rules fit it, or rework it.
- Pick the model and one main platform, open the account, and pass the identity check: ID and selfie on Patreon, eKYC on Fantia, KYC screening on SubscribeStar.
- Turn on the adult setting before the first explicit upload: Adult/18+ on Patreon, the R-18 setting on FANBOX, pixiv and Ci-en, the sensitive-content box, tags and content warnings on itch.io.
- Make two versions of every page you will promote: the explicit file for paying fans and a clean crop for previews and free posts. On Japanese platforms, censor the explicit version to that platform's size rule, flattened into one layer.
- Write titles, tags and descriptions in plain words that do not name a banned theme.
- Set up payouts and tax forms before the first payout date. Patreon asks non-US creators for a W-8BEN; SubscribeStar asks for a W-9 or W-8BEN; FANBOX pays artists abroad only through PayPal; Fantia pays abroad only to permanent overseas residents past 50,000 JPY.
- Post a free sampler on pixiv or Newgrounds with a link to the paid page, and keep the link pointing at clean pages only.
- Keep your own copies of everything you upload, and consider a second platform as a fallback in case the first suspends you.
Patreon creators on an old, cheaper fee plan should know one more rule: if the page is ever unpublished, by the creator or by Patreon for any reason, it returns on the standard 10% plan. More on fees is in creator platform fees, and all creator pages are on the creators hub.
FAQ
Where can I publish adult comics for free?
pixiv (R-18 work, mosaics required) and Newgrounds (A-rated art) cost nothing to post on. Neither pays artists for posts; pixiv's paid feature is commissions through Requests. Japanese artists on pixiv usually link out to FANBOX or Fantia for income, and western artists to SubscribeStar or Patreon.
Do I need to show ID to post adult comics?
On Patreon, yes: Adult/18+ creators submit a government ID and a selfie. Fantia checks photo ID for every creator, and SubscribeStar runs KYC screening before you can publish. pixiv asks for a date of birth, and FANBOX describes no ID check.
Can I post NSFW comics on WEBTOON?
Not explicit ones. WEBTOON Canvas bans nudity and sexually gratifying content even on series rated Mature, which is for readers 18 and over and covers sexual themes without explicit images.
What are the best sites for NSFW comic artists?
SubscribeStar and Patreon for memberships in English, pixivFANBOX or Fantia for Japanese readers, itch.io for selling finished books, and pixiv or Newgrounds for free reach. Which fits depends on how you want to charge and whether your comic clears each platform's theme rules.
Can I link my paid page from pixiv or Newgrounds?
Yes; the risk is in what the link points to. FANBOX bans sharing links to uncensored files hosted elsewhere, SubscribeStar bans links to sites with prohibited content, and Ko-fi bans censored previews used to sell uncensored versions anywhere.
