Subscriptions vs Pay Per Chapter for Creators

For a creator choosing between a subscription and pay per chapter, the answer follows the drawing schedule: a comic that updates every week earns best as recurring support on Patreon, SubscribeStar, pixivFANBOX, Fantia or Ci-en, and a finished book earns best as a single sale. Fantia and Ci-en now sell single chapters out of a subscription archive, so you can do both on one page.

In short

  • Recurring support suits a comic that keeps updating: Patreon and SubscribeStar take 10% plus processing, FANBOX 12.9% on R-18 pages, Fantia 12.5% in drawn categories, Ci-en 13% on R-18 plans.
  • Single sales suit finished books: Patreon one-time purchases (5% to 12%), SubscribeStar paid posts, Fantia back numbers, Ci-en one-off articles (15%), itch.io (default 10%) and Affect3D for 3D work.
  • Since 2026-10-22 Fantia fans can buy back numbers without joining the plan, which makes every past month a chapter for sale.
  • pixivFANBOX sells plans only; one-off goods go through a BOOTH Secret Shop at 550 JPY a month.

Readers weigh this choice by what they pay for a story; our reader-side comparison of subscriptions and pay per chapter covers that. For the artist, the questions are different: which model fits the way you draw, what each platform keeps, and when the money arrives. The other creator guides go platform by platform.

Choose by how you draw

Choose recurring support if you post pages, sketches or chapters on a schedule and have readers who want the next one. The model rewards steady output: a backer who sees nothing new for two months has little reason to renew. Choose single sales if you work in finished books, release irregularly, or want strangers to buy one comic without committing to you. A 40-page doujin finished once a year is easier to sell than to subscribe to.

Mixing the two is easier than it was a year ago. Fantia and Ci-en sell old plan months and single articles to non-members, Patreon sells one-time purchases next to tiers, and SubscribeStar's payout policy covers subscriptions, paid posts, collections, tips and commissions on one profile.

Fees for each model, platform by platform

PlatformRecurring supportSingle chapter or book
Patreon10% plus processing (pages after 2025-08-04); monthly, annual or per-creationOne-time purchases of posts, collections and digital products, 5% to 12% by plan
SubscribeStar (adult)10% plus processing of 3% + $0.30 to 10% + $0.40Paid posts and collections; the 10% service fee applies to all earnings
pixivFANBOX12.9% R-18, 10% all-ages; plans 100 to 10,000 JPYNo per-post sales found; goods through BOOTH Secret Shop (550 JPY a month)
Fantia12.5% in drawn categories; plans 100 to 100,000 JPYBack numbers, downloads and goods at 12.5%; the buyer adds 8%
Ci-en13% R-18, 10% all-ages; up to 10 plansOne-off articles 15% (beta); back numbers in the 13% plan bucket
itch.ioNoneCreator-chosen share, default 10%, plus processing
Affect3DNoneStore keeps 40%, or 30% for Exclusive vendors

Three things stand out. On Ci-en a single article costs the R-18 creator 2 points more than plan income (15% against 13%). Fantia keeps the creator's cut the same either way, but the fan pays 8% more for a back number than the sticker price, while a drawn-category plan carries no buyer fee. Patreon's one-time fee depends on the plan: Patreon says creators who started selling digital products before 2025-05-22 may be on 5%.

How recurring support pays

The billing calendar decides when money lands and when a reader leaves. pixivFANBOX charges a new supporter the full plan price on the day they join, then again between the 1st and 5th of each month; a supporter who stops keeps access until the end of the month, with no refund. Fantia charges a full calendar month on joining, with no proration, and renews on the 1st. Ci-en charges the first month at once, then renews at month end (cards are authorized from the 21st and charged on the 1st), and fans keep access to every month they paid for after leaving.

Patreon memberships renew monthly (for monthly and per-creation memberships) or annually (for annual memberships). Per-creation memberships are the middle ground: the creator charges per paid creation, so a comic artist can price by the chapter inside a membership, and the Terms bill those charges monthly. Adult/18+ creators can offer free trials on paid tiers. Fans who cancel keep access until the end of the billing period, and Patreon doesn't typically offer refunds.

Recurring support also carries rules about what free visitors see. Patreon requires Adult/18+ works to sit behind the paid tier, with profile, banner, tier descriptions and free posts kept clean. A subscription page for porn comics therefore sells on cropped or censored teasers and on the creator's reputation from free platforms such as pixiv.

How per-chapter and per-book sales pay

Fantia's change of 2026-10-22 is the biggest shift for the per-chapter side. Back numbers, the posts from past plan months, can now be bought without joining the plan. A creator who has run a plan for two years has two years of chapters for sale to readers who would never subscribe. Fantia also sells downloads, physical goods and post bundles.

Ci-en's one-off articles (買い切り記事), still marked beta, work the same way for single posts: anyone can buy one without a plan, and Ci-en issues separate sales statements for them since January 2026. Back numbers for past months stay in the plan bucket at 13% for R-18.

Patreon lets Adult/18+ creators sell digital products (including posts and collections) as one-time purchases, but only on subscription billing. SubscribeStar sells paid posts and collections from the same profile as the tiers.

Outside the fan-club platforms, itch.io sells each comic at its own price or a pay-what-you-want minimum, as DRM-free downloads; NSFW comics on sale there run from $1 to $8.99. Its adult listings have been unstable since July 2025, when itch.io pulled adult pages from browse and search. Affect3D sells 3D adult comics singly after a staff review and pays the artist 60% or 70%.

Commissions are per-piece sales of a different kind: Skeb keeps 6.8% to 9.8% of a request, and a comic page can be the request.

A worked comparison on Fantia and Ci-en

Take an artist who earns 50,000 JPY in a month, with prices chosen for the arithmetic. On Fantia, 50 backers on a 1,000 JPY drawn-category plan pay 50,000 JPY and the creator keeps 43,750 JPY after the 12.5% fee. Selling one back number at 500 JPY to 100 readers also grosses 50,000 JPY and leaves the same 43,750 JPY, but the readers pay 54,000 JPY between them because of the 8% buyer fee.

On Ci-en with an R-18 page, 50,000 JPY of plan income leaves 43,500 JPY after 13%, and 50,000 JPY of one-off articles leaves 42,500 JPY after 15%. Either platform then charges its payout fee: 330 JPY per claim on Fantia, nothing for a domestic transfer on Ci-en.

The fee difference between the models is small next to the difference in who buys. The plan income repeats next month if the backers stay; the back-number income depends on new readers finding the archive. The fee table on creator platform fees runs the same kind of example across every platform, in dollars.

Combining both on one page

One setup the platforms above support: a low plan for sketches and progress pages, a higher plan for the full chapters, and the finished archive sold chapter by chapter to non-members. Fantia, Ci-en, Patreon and SubscribeStar all support that from one page; FANBOX supports the plans and leaves the single sales to BOOTH. Where the money then goes, and in what currency, is covered under creator payout methods.

FAQ

Should I sell my comic per chapter or on Patreon?

If you post on a schedule, a Patreon membership (10% plus processing on new pages) pays every month; if you finish books, sell them singly. Patreon itself does both: one-time purchases of posts and collections cost 5% to 12% depending on your plan, and per-creation memberships charge per paid creation.

Can fans buy Fantia back numbers without joining the plan?

Yes, since 2026-10-22. The creator pays the usual 12.5% in drawn categories, and the buyer pays an 8% service fee on top of the price.

What fee does Ci-en charge for one-off articles?

15%, for both all-ages and R-18 work. R-18 monthly plans, including back numbers, pay 13%, and all-ages plans 10%.

Can I sell single posts on pixivFANBOX?

We found no per-post sale feature in FANBOX's help centre. It sells monthly plans; supporter-only goods go through a BOOTH Secret Shop at 550 JPY a month.
