In short
- Explicit drawn work is allowed on Patreon (Adult/18+ pages, behind the paywall), SubscribeStar's adult site, pixivFANBOX, Fantia and Ci-en.
- Ko-fi and Gumroad run memberships too, but both ban explicit comics.
- The artist sets the price; the platform takes 10% (Patreon, SubscribeStar) to 12.5% to 13% (Fantia, FANBOX, Ci-en) on adult plans, before processing.
- Card access varies: Fantia lists only JCB and American Express, Ci-en only JCB.
A creator subscription is a monthly payment from a fan to one artist, in exchange for whatever that artist posts for the tier: finished pages, early chapters, high-resolution files, sketches. Comic stores such as FAKKU, Manta or Tappytoon sell a catalog; none of them has a feature for paying an individual artist monthly. For a reader, the money goes to the artist directly and opens whatever the artist keeps for supporters. For the artist it is recurring income that does not depend on a publisher's contract. The definition and history sit in our creator subscription glossary entry; this page compares the platforms, as part of our features section.

Tips Boost: the client can add money after delivery
Patreon allows sexual work in drawn, animated and written form on pages in its Adult/18+ category, behind the paywall. Creators in that category pass an ID check To comply with payment processor requirements
, and Nudity and sexually explicit material are never allowed in previews
. Its rules still ban incest (step relations included), non-consent and hypnosis themes in drawn work. Plans can be Monthly and annual subscriptions
with Free trials, discounts and sales
.
SubscribeStar's adult site calls itself the Number one monetization platform for NSFW digital artists
and limits itself to fictional and digitally created work. Since March 11, 2026 it pre-screens every post and bans several themes common in hentai, incest and non-consent among them. Its terms put the maximum subscription price at typically $100 to $250.
The three Japanese platforms run fan plans for illustrators and doujin artists, and all three require mosaics on sexual work. pixivFANBOX plans run from 100 JPY to 10,000 JPY per month
, and pixiv puts the average pledge at about 500 yen. Fantia fan clubs can charge 100 to 100,000 yen a month. Ci-en, a Japanese fan-support site, allows up to 10 plans per creator at 100 to 100,000 yen; its R-18 side is mostly doujin game progress diaries, with fewer finished comics. pixiv itself has no fan subscription and stopped linking FANBOX automatically from work pages on May 30, 2023.
DeviantArt sells "Exclusives to supporters" through its Core membership, but its rules for explicit work in subscriptions could not be verified, so we leave it out of the adult picks. Ko-fi and Gumroad both run memberships and both ban explicit comics: Ko-fi's guidelines even forbid censored previews that sell uncensored versions elsewhere, and Gumroad names Adult comics with nudity or sexual acts
as not allowed. Skeb sells one-off commissions only.
What a subscriber pays
The plan price is the artist's choice on every platform here, so the useful questions are the extras and the payment methods.
- Fantia adds an 8% buyer service fee to live-action plans since November 27, 2025; illustration and manga plans do not carry it. Its card list is JCB and American Express, Visa and Mastercard having been suspended since May 21, 2024.
- pixivFANBOX adds EU VAT on top of the plan price for European supporters from July 6, 2026. It gives no refunds and no partial-month proration, and anyone who had not paid with PayPal on FANBOX before March 21, 2024 cannot use PayPal to support R-18 creators.
- Ci-en's supporter help lists JCB with 3-D Secure as the card option.
- SubscribeStar lets each creator decide whether the creator or the subscriber pays processing, which runs from 3% + $0.30 to 10% + $0.40.
- Patreon on iPhone: Apple takes 30% of purchases made in the iOS app, and Apple set November 1, 2026 as the date all creators must use subscription billing there. Fans can still join through a web browser.
Fantia also lets readers buy a creator's back numbers without joining the plan since October 22, 2026, which suits someone who wants one month's posts and not a recurring charge.
What the creator keeps
| Platform | Plan price range | Platform fee on adult plans |
|---|---|---|
| Patreon | Set by creator | 10% (pages published after August 4, 2025), plus processing from 2.9% + $0.30 |
| SubscribeStar (adult) | Set by creator, maximum typically $100 to $250 | 10%, plus processing 3% + $0.30 to 10% + $0.40 |
| pixivFANBOX | 100 to 10,000 JPY a month | 12.9% with R-18 on (10% all-ages) |
| Fantia | 100 to 100,000 JPY a month | 12.5% in drawn categories |
| Ci-en | 100 to 100,000 JPY a month | 13% on R-18 plans (10% all-ages) |
Payout fees and thresholds come on top: SubscribeStar needs a $150 balance before a payout, FANBOX pays automatically from 5,000 yen, Ci-en from 5,000 yen per sales type by bank. Our creator platform fees page works through a $1,000 month on each, and payout methods covers banks, PayPal and thresholds. For the choice between a monthly plan and selling chapters, see subscriptions vs pay per chapter for creators.

Limits that come from the payment processors
Most rule changes on these platforms trace back to card networks. FANBOX raised its R-18 fee from 10% to 12.9% in September 2025, citing review costs that card companies and processors had pushed up, and in September 2026 creators reported suspensions of posts, some years old, over themes such as hypnosis. SubscribeStar's content rules, rewritten in March 2026, cite payment processors, and acquiring bank standards
. Patreon's ID check exists for the same reason. A subscription plan is only as stable as the platform's payment setup, so a second platform as a backup is sensible advice for any artist who depends on one. The creator side is covered in depth on our list of the best platforms for adult comic creators; one-off support is on the creator tips page.
