In short
- Pay per chapter if you read fewer than about a dozen episodes a month, read one series at a time, or want nothing to renew. Subscribe if you read more than that, in a catalogue the plan covers.
- Manta Standard ($4.99) beats Gems at 13 to 16 episodes a month. Tappytoon Club ($4.99) hands you 4,400 points, about 14 episodes.
- Toomics VIP ($8.99 or $9.99 a month) matches Lezhin's coin price at 18 to 20 episodes; the $47.99 yearly plan matches it at 8.
- FAKKU's 30-day card ($14.95) is cheaper than two books at the $8.50 we saw; the books are yours to keep.
This comparison is about the reader's wallet, one of the platform comparisons we keep. How a creator weighs the two models is covered in subscriptions vs pay per chapter for creators, and the mechanics of coins and unlocks are in how pay per chapter platforms work.
Pay per chapter if, subscribe if
Pay per chapter fits a reader who follows one or two series, reads in bursts, or does not want a charge to repeat. A coin pack is a one-off payment, nothing renews, and what you buy is yours to reread. It costs more per episode at small pack sizes, and a binge gets expensive.
A subscription fits a reader who gets through many episodes a month, wants to try series for a chapter or two, and is willing to put a reminder in the calendar. It stops being cheap if the series you want sit outside the plan: Toomics' VIP excludes its Store titles, Manta's Unlimited Library is 300+ series and some 18+ full versions are Gem-only, and MangaPlaza's Premium covers chapters carrying the Premium icon. Compare the library before the price.
Subscription vs pay per chapter comics: the arithmetic
All sums below use numbers from each service's own pages. They compare price only. A membership library and a coin catalogue are rarely the same series.

Manta membership vs Tappytoon points
Manta Standard is $4.99 for one month, $12.99 for three (about $4.33 a month) or $49.90 for twelve (about $4.16). A Manta episode costs 30 to 60 Gems, and 1,250 Gems cost $9.99, so a 40-Gem episode is about $0.32 and a 50-Gem one about $0.40. Divide $4.99 by those and the membership wins from the 13th to the 16th episode of the month. Premium is $9.99 in the app ($8.99 on the web) and adds 1,420 Gems a month; buying 1,420 Gems at the non-member rate would cost about $11.35, so the plan costs less than its Gems alone.
Tappytoon runs it the other way. Club Standard is $4.99 a month ($47.99 a year, which it prices at $3.99 a month) and its main payoff is points: 4,400 on the first day of each cycle plus 30 bonus points a day. At 300 points an episode that is about 14 episodes, or $0.34 each, against $0.38 when you buy 3,900 points for $4.99. Time Till Free also comes round every 12 hours instead of 24. So Tappytoon's membership is a discounted coin pack with extras, and Manta's is an all-you-can-read library. Whether unspent Club points carry over is not stated in the files.
Manta is the better fit for readers who skim many series. Tappytoon's Club makes sense for anyone who would buy a pack every month anyway. Manta's plan rows sit on its pricing page.
Toomics VIP vs Lezhin coins
Toomics does not publish a dollar price per coin; a chapter costs 1 to 3 coins, and the app lists coin items at $9.99 and $19.99 with no counts. The comparison therefore uses Lezhin as the coin benchmark: a 20-coin episode costs about $0.50 at 400 coins for $9.99. VIP on the App Store was $8.99 or $9.99 for one month, $17.49 or $23.99 for three, $29.49 for six and $47.99 for twelve (the web price needs an account).
At $0.50 an episode, a $9.99 month pays for itself at 20 episodes and an $8.99 month at 18. The $47.99 year works out to about $4 a month, which matches 8 Lezhin-priced episodes. VIP covers VIP-exclusive series and gives 5 Gift Coins a month, which expire at month end. Store titles are coin-only and VIP does not include them, so if those are the series you follow, the subscription buys you nothing for them. Toomics' price page lists the plan rows.
MangaPlaza Premium vs points
MangaPlaza's Premium is $6.99 a month. A point is one cent, and adult listings showed $1.99 and $2.00. If those are chapter prices, which the listings do not say, four chapters a month make Premium cheaper, but only chapters with the Premium icon count. Premium also adds 5 to 10 percent bonus points on each pack. A 7-day trial exists, once per user and payment method, and it converts to paid unless you cancel on the site.
FAKKU Unlimited card vs buying books
FAKKU is the clean case, because it sells books and a subscription side by side. A 30-day Unlimited card is $14.95, a 90-day card $44.85 and a 365-day card $179, which is about $14.71 per 30 days: the longer cards save almost nothing. One 63-page doujin cost $8.50 when we checked, and prices ranged from $6.48 on sale to $24.25. Two books at $8.50 are $17.00, so Unlimited is cheaper from the second book of the month.
The two things do not hold the same. Unlimited covers magazine back issues and new issues, and FAKKU's help page does not say whether those chapters can be downloaded. A bought book is a PDF or zip you keep. Its monthly subscription price is shown only after sign-in, so the card price stands in here. See FAKKU pricing for the rest.
A subscription that is not unlimited
WEBTOON Premium shows that "subscription" can mean something smaller. The $3.99 plan gives 20 coins plus 2 bonus a month and ad-free Originals, with no episode discount. At the app's 10 coins for $0.99, 22 coins would cost about $2.18, so the plan costs more than the coins; it is for the ad-free reading, not savings. WEBTOON is not an adult site, and its rules ban nudity and explicit sex.

Cancelling and renewing
The difference that matters most after the price is what happens next month. Coins renew nothing and there is nothing to cancel. Memberships renew until you act, and each service has its own door.
- Toomics: charged automatically every month; cancel with the Cancel VIP Membership button in the website's account settings, or on the App Store or Google Play subscription page. The help centre says a "Free Month" offered to VIP members who try to cancel auto-renews and hides the cancel button until the second or third week. A VIP refund is possible within 14 days if no VIP content was read.
- Manta: renews unless auto-renew is off at least 24 hours before the period ends; signing out or deleting the app does not cancel. You cancel where you subscribed: App Store, Google Play or the web. No refunds.
- Tappytoon: cancel through the store where you subscribed; purchases are final.
- MangaPlaza: website only, under My Account, Premium Membership Details. Requests by email are not accepted.
- FAKKU: the Subscription Settings page is the only way; access continues to the end of the period, and payments are not refunded. Prepaid cards are one-off.
- Honeytoon: by email to the support address, at least 24 hours before the period ends. Its plans renew every 4 weeks, or every 1, 12 or 24 weeks, so a 4-week plan bills 13 times a year.
- TOPTOON Plus: from profile settings, or by email; no refund for the rest of the month.
Pay per chapter has its own exit: Lezhin, Lalatoon and Toomics refund coins within 7 days if none were spent. The full steps for any service are in how to cancel a comic subscription, and how comic subscriptions work explains the renewal cycle. The per-service coin numbers sit on the pay per chapter feature page.
FAQ
Is a webtoon subscription worth it?
If you read more than about 13 episodes a month on a $4.99 plan such as Manta Standard, yes, within the plan's library. For fewer, coins cost less.
Is Toomics VIP worth it?
Against Lezhin-style coin prices it pays off at 18 to 20 episodes on a monthly plan, or about 8 on the $47.99 year. VIP excludes the Store titles, which are coin-only.
Is FAKKU Unlimited worth it?
For two or more books' worth of reading a month, the $14.95 card is cheaper than buying at $8.50 a book. It does not give you files to keep.
Do webtoon subscriptions renew automatically?
Yes at Toomics, Manta, Tappytoon, MangaPlaza, Honeytoon, TOPTOON Plus and FAKKU's monthly plan. FAKKU's prepaid cards are one-off.
Can I get a refund on a subscription?
Rarely. Toomics allows 14 days if no VIP content was read; Manta, Tappytoon, MangaPlaza, FAKKU and TOPTOON Plus say payments are final.
