How pay per chapter works

Pay per chapter works in three steps: you buy a pack of the platform's currency, each episode is priced in that currency, and you spend it one unlock at a time. The real price depends on the pack size, the bonus coins and what you leave unspent, so an episode that costs 3 clovers on Lalatoon is anywhere from $0.29 to $0.48.

In short

  • You buy a currency pack, each episode has a price in that currency, and you unlock one episode (or a bundle) at a time.
  • From official prices: Lalatoon $0.29 to $0.48 an episode, Tappytoon about $0.35 to $0.43, Manta about $0.32 to $0.50, Lezhin about $0.45 to $0.50 for a 20-coin episode.
  • Bigger packs lower the rate, but leftover coins raise what a series really costs you.
  • Check expiry, refunds and separate web and app wallets before buying a large pack.
  • An unlock is access on that platform. Tapas readers lose theirs when it closes on 2027-03-31.

Pay per chapter is the default way webtoon platforms sell, and the coin layer makes it hard to see what you pay; the conversion into dollars follows. Which services sell this way is on pay per chapter comics, and the term itself is defined at pay per chapter meaning. More on reading and paying is in the guides section.

The three moving parts

First, the pack. Platforms sell their currency in tiers, and bigger tiers usually add bonus coins. Lalatoon's 290-clover pack is 220 clovers plus 70 bonus for $31.99; Lezhin's $9.99 pack in the US App Store is 400 coins plus 45 bonus.

Second, the price per episode, set in the currency and often per title. Lalatoon charged 3 clovers on every series checked. Lezhin's tag list has 20COINS, 25COINS, 30COINS, 40COINS and 50-and-up tags. Manta says comic episodes typically cost 30 to 60 Gems since it multiplied its Gem scale by ten on March 31, 2026. Honeytoon charged 9 coins on every locked episode checked.

Third, the unlock. You can buy one episode, or all of them: Toomics has "Purchase All Episodes", Lezhin and Tappytoon "Unlock all", Lalatoon "Purchase all episodes". Some titles give a bulk discount; one Tappytoon series showed 10% off for 20 or more episodes, and Tapas gives 20% off 10 to 19 locked episodes and 25% off 20 or more.

Two stores price in plain cents. MangaPlaza says 100 points equates to 1 U.S. dollar, and its Adult Romance listings showed prices such as USD 1.99 / 199pt; points can cover part of a price with the card paying the rest. BookWalker's coins are US$0.01 each at every pack size. INKR's iOS packs work out to about 6.2 cents a coin, but chapter prices were not recorded.

Some sums cannot be done from official numbers. Toomics charges 1 to 3 coins a chapter but shows coin pack sizes only after login. WEBTOON's coins cost about 9 to 10 cents each, and the coin price of an episode appears only in the app before you unlock it; press reports put affected episodes at three coins after the Daily Pass ended in May 2025. Tapas last published 375 or 450 Ink an episode in 2023, and its Ink prices sit behind login.

Leftovers: what a whole series costs

Packs rarely divide evenly into episodes, and the remainder sits in your wallet. Take a 60-episode series as an example.

  • Lalatoon: 60 episodes at 3 clovers is 180 clovers. The cheapest way to get there is the 140 and 60 packs, $22.98 for 200 clovers, so you pay about $0.38 an episode and keep 20 clovers.
  • Lezhin: 60 episodes at 20 coins is 1,200 coins. Three $9.99 packs give 1,335 coins for $29.97, leaving 135.
  • Tappytoon, on a series with the 20+ discount: 60 episodes at 270 points is 16,200 points, which one 16,500-point pack ($19.99) covers, about $0.33 an episode.

At 60 episodes, a series on any of these costs more than a month of most subscriptions. Manta Standard is $4.99 a month and Toomics VIP $47.99 a year in the App Store; the trade-off is laid out in subscription vs pay per chapter comics.

Wallet rules to check before a big pack

Expiry varies more than the prices do. Toomics says bought and bonus coins never expire, and WEBTOON's bought coins do not expire, though its free coins do and are spent first. Lalatoon's paid coins last 5 years and bonus coins 1 year; MangaPlaza's purchased points expire after 36 months. Honeytoon's payment policy says 12 months while its FAQ still says coins have no time limit. Coins bought through Apple's in-app purchase fall under Apple's rule that such currencies may not expire.

Wallets can be split. Lalatoon says you cannot combine coins purchased on the Web and on the APP. Refunds are narrow: Toomics, Lezhin and Lalatoon refund coins within 7 days only if none were used, while Tappytoon, Manta and MangaPlaza do not refund at all.

What you keep after unlocking

An unlocked episode is access, and each service words the promise differently. Tappytoon adds unlocks permanently to your unlock history. Manta says series unlocked with Gems stay in your library even if the series leaves Manta. WEBTOON keeps Fast Pass episodes available while the series remains on our service. None of that survives the service itself: Tapas ends on 2027-03-31, and its unlocked episodes become inaccessible and cannot move to other Kakao services.

Working out the price yourself

  1. Find the episode price in the currency on the series page (it can differ between series on the same platform).
  2. Divide the pack price by the coins it contains, counting bonus coins only if they will not expire before you use them.
  3. Multiply by the episode price to get the cost per episode.
  4. Multiply by the number of locked episodes, then subtract any free episodes and timer unlocks you will wait for.
  5. Round up to whole packs and see what is left over.

Free timers change the sum. Tappytoon's Time Till Free and Lalatoon's 72-hour coupons open episodes at no cost if you can wait; see wait for free. How coins differ from platform to platform is on the coin system, and current packs are on Lezhin coin prices and Tappytoon pricing.
