Pay per chapter meaning

Pay per chapter means buying a comic one chapter or episode at a time instead of paying a subscription for a whole catalog. Most webtoon platforms sell this way through coins, and what you buy is access on that platform.

In short

  • You pay for each chapter or episode you read, usually with a platform currency.
  • On Lalatoon an episode costs 3 clovers, about $0.29 to $0.48 at web pack prices.
  • Unlocked episodes stay readable only while the service runs. Tapas buyers lose theirs on March 31, 2027.
  • WEBTOON's removal of Daily Pass in May 2025 moved affected completed series to per-episode coin unlocks.

Pay per chapter meaning

A pay-per-chapter platform charges for each unit of a story. Webtoon services call the unit an episode, manga stores a chapter or a volume. The alternative is a subscription that opens a whole catalog for a monthly fee, the way FAKKU Unlimited and GlobalComix Gold work. Some services switch between the two: TOPTOON Plus stopped selling coins and moved to a monthly membership, though leftover coins still buy episodes.

What one chapter costs

Platforms rarely print a dollar price per episode, so it has to be worked out from two numbers: what a coin costs and how many coins an episode takes.

  • Lalatoon: 3 clovers an episode. With the 25-clover pack at $3.99 that is about $0.48; the 500-clover pack brings it down to about $0.29 (web prices from its January 2025 notice).
  • Kirtu: Savita+ costs $19.95 a month for 30 credits, and a comic episode takes 5 credits, so about $3.33 an episode.
  • Honeytoon: every locked episode checked cost 9 coins; the dollar figure depends on which pack you buy.
  • Tapas: the last official figures were 375 or 450 Ink an episode (March 2023), and the Ink-to-dollar rate is only visible after login.

The arithmetic is on how pay per chapter works, and the currencies themselves on coin systems.

What you keep after paying

An unlocked episode is a right to read it on that platform, not a file. WEBTOON says unlocked Fast Pass episodes stay available while the series remains on our service. Tapas, which ends service on March 31, 2027, says unlocked episodes will become inaccessible and Ink is non-refundable (the Tapas shutdown). Stores that sell DRM-free downloads, such as Irodori Comics, are the exception.

When WEBTOON dropped its Daily Pass on May 29, 2025, affected completed series went to coin unlocks per episode (three coins each, as reported) or a 3-day Ad Pass; details in WEBTOON removes Daily Pass. Platforms that sell this way are compared on pay-per-chapter platforms, and the trade-off on subscription vs pay per chapter. More terms are in the glossary.

FAQ

Is pay per chapter cheaper than a subscription?

It depends on how much you read. A few episodes a month cost little, but a 100-episode series at 30 to 50 cents an episode comes to $30 to $50.

Do I own the chapters I unlock?

No. You get access on that platform for as long as it carries the series. Only stores that sell downloadable files give you something to keep.

Can I read paid chapters for free?

Sometimes. Many platforms release locked episodes for free on a timer; see wait for free.
