In short
- Each episode unlocks for free after a waiting period. Paying coins skips the wait.
- Kakao Page started it in 2014 as Wait-Or-Pay.
- Tapas calls it Wait Until Free, Lalatoon Wait Till It's Free; WEBTOON lets Fast Pass episodes turn free after a while.
- Waiting gets you roughly one episode per series every few days.
- On Tapas it only runs in the app, so it never reaches the web-only Mature versions.
Where wait for free came from
Kakao's own history says that On October 23, 2014, Kakao Page ... introduced a new business model, "Wait-Or-Pay (WOP)"
. It borrowed the idea from the mobile game Anipang, where hearts refill over time and impatient players buy more. A webtoon reader who does not pay waits for the timer; one who does not want to wait buys the episode.
How platforms run the timer
Tapas runs Wait Until Free only in its app. A reader can unlock one episode per series each time the timer completes, and that episode stays readable for 72 hours; on top of that, up to three WUF episodes a day can be opened by watching ads. Tapas ends service on March 31, 2027, which ends this too (the Tapas shutdown).
Lalatoon gives one Wait Till It's Free coupon 72 hours after you read an episode on an eligible series. Coupons do not work on the latest 20 episodes, and an episode opened with one can be reread for three days. WEBTOON says many Fast Pass episodes become free after a specific period of time
and adds an Ad Pass that opens episodes for three days. Lezhin puts a WUF label on some titles but publishes no timing rules.
How far waiting gets you
Not far, if you are in a hurry. A reader who uses every Lalatoon coupon on one series gets an episode every three days, about ten a month, and never reaches the newest 20 that way. On Tapas, the Mature section is web only while WUF is app only, so the uncensored versions cannot be read by waiting.
Free options by platform are on free adult webtoons. The paid side is explained under webtoon coins and pay per chapter, and the apps on adult webtoon apps. More terms are in the glossary.
FAQ
How long is the wait on wait for free?
It depends on the platform and the series. Lalatoon's coupon arrives 72 hours after reading an episode, and Tapas runs some series on a 3-hour timer. Lezhin does not publish its timings.
Can I read mature webtoons with wait for free?
On Tapas, no: WUF runs in the app and the Mature section is web only. Other platforms do not say whether their timers cover adult titles.
Is wait for free the same as a free trial?
No. A trial opens a subscription for a fixed time; wait for free releases single episodes of a paid series on a timer, forever, one at a time.
