How comic subscriptions work

A digital comic subscription charges you on a schedule for one of four things: an all-you-can-read catalog (Toomics VIP, Manta's Unlimited Library), a monthly pile of coins or points (Tappytoon Club, WEBTOON Premium), a fixed block of access days (FAKKU's prepaid Unlimited cards), or one artist's work (Patreon, pixivFANBOX). Most renew automatically until you cancel, and most exclude part of the catalog.

In short

  • All-you-can-read memberships: Toomics VIP, TOPTOON Plus, Manta, MangaPlaza Premium ($6.99), Honeytoon. Each leaves some titles out.
  • Currency plans pay out coins or points each month: Tappytoon Club ($4.99 for 4,400 points), WEBTOON Premium, Manta Premium (1,420 Gems).
  • FAKKU sells prepaid Unlimited cards: $14.95 for 30 days, $44.85 for 90, $179 for 365.
  • Creator subscriptions pay one artist; Patreon, pixivFANBOX and Fantia each bill on a different calendar.

Search for "comic subscription" and you mostly get print pull-lists, where a comic shop holds each new issue of the series you name; that is a different thing from what follows. A digital subscription buys access on a platform, not books on a shelf, and it comes in four shapes that behave very differently when you read a lot, read a little, or cancel. The rest of our reading and money guides sit alongside this one.

All-you-can-read memberships

This is the model most readers picture: one fee, then read anything in the membership catalog. Read "membership catalog" closely, because every service carves something out of it.

  • Toomics VIP gives unlimited access to our available webtoons without purchasing Coins, but titles in the TOOMICS STORE still cost coins. VIP adds 5 Gift Coins a month that expire at month end. In the US App Store, 12 months costs $47.99, about $4 a month.
  • TOPTOON Plus dropped coins entirely and is now membership-only, billed monthly, every three months or every six months. The price shows only after you sign in.
  • Manta's Unlimited Library covers 300+ series; some titles, including some [Full ver.] 18+ editions, are Gem-only even for members.
  • MangaPlaza Premium ($6.99 a month) covers only chapters with the Premium icon; MangaPlaza advertises 30,000 of them.
  • Honeytoon's plans run 1, 4, 12 or 24 weeks, and only its Ultra plans include the uncensored versions.

The western members sites are closer to a true all-access pass. Slipshine opens its whole archive for $29.00 for the first 30 days, then $11.57 every 30 days. Filthy Figments costs $12.99 a month, or $99.95 a year at its sale price (the regular price is $156.00). Kirtu's yearly plan, $99.95, covers all its comics and videos.

Plans that pay you in coins or points

Some subscriptions do not unlock anything by themselves. They hand you a monthly allowance of the platform's currency, often at a better rate than buying it, and you still spend it episode by episode.

Tappytoon Club Standard is the clearest example. For $4.99 a month you get 4,400 points on the first day of each cycle, 30 bonus points a day, and a Time Till Free wait cut to 12 hours. The same $4.99 buys 3,900 points as a one-off pack in the US App Store, so the Club pays back in points alone. At 300 points an episode (the price seen on one series), 4,400 points is about 14 episodes. The yearly plan is $47.99, or $3.99 a month.

Manta Premium mixes both models. It includes the Unlimited Library and 1,420 Gems a month, for $9.99 in the app or $8.99 on Manta Web. A non-member's $9.99 Gem bundle holds 1,250 Gems, so on the web Premium costs a dollar less than the Gem bundle and adds the library. WEBTOON Premium is a pure currency plan: $3.99 a month buys 20 coins plus 2 bonus coins, and the higher tiers ($9.99, $19.99, $49.99) add bonus coins, episode discounts and ad-free Originals. Kirtu's Savita+ gives 30 credits a month for $19.95; a comic episode costs 5 credits, so that is 6 episodes, about $3.33 each.

Prepaid passes: FAKKU Unlimited cards

FAKKU Unlimited normally bills monthly on the calendar day you joined, and the monthly price shows only after sign-in. FAKKU's merch store also sells prepaid cards: 30 days for $14.95, 90 days for $44.85, and 365 days for $179.00. The 90-day card is exactly three 30-day cards. The 365-day card works out to about $14.71 per 30 days, so buying a year saves very little. A prepaid card is a one-off purchase for a fixed number of days, which suits anyone who wants a month of the uncensored magazine archive without a recurring charge. The full price breakdown is on FAKKU subscription price.

Creator subscriptions

A creator subscription pays one artist, not a catalog. Patreon memberships renew monthly (for monthly and per-creation memberships) or annually (for annual memberships), and Adult/18+ work must sit behind the paid tier. The billing calendars are where the platforms differ most:

  • pixivFANBOX charges the full plan price on the day you join, then between the 1st and 5th of each month. Joining on the 28th still costs a full month.
  • Fantia charges a full calendar month on joining, with no proration, and renews on the 1st.
  • Patreon renews on your membership's cycle; per-creation memberships charge for each paid post the artist publishes, billed monthly.

After cancelling, Patreon and FANBOX both keep access until the end of the period you paid for. The money side for the artist is covered in how to support adult comic creators, and the feature on creator subscriptions.

Renewal, trials and cancelling

Almost every plan above renews automatically. Toomics' terms say VIP is automatically charged to your Payment Method every month; Manta renews unless auto-renew is turned off at least 24 hours before the period ends. Plans sold through the App Store follow Apple's rules: a subscription must last at least seven days, and the app must describe what you get before you subscribe.

Free trials are rare. MangaPlaza offers a one-time 7-day Premium trial that converts to paid unless cancelled, Patreon lets Adult/18+ creators offer trials on paid tiers, and Toomics says there is no free trial without buying a VIP plan first. Cancelling usually ends the renewal, not the access: on Google Play, access runs to the end of the period already paid for. Where each service hides its cancel button is in how to cancel a comic subscription.

If you read a few series a month, paying per episode can be cheaper than any of this. The two models are compared on subscription vs pay per chapter, and every plan's current price is on the pricing overview.

FAQ

Does a webtoon subscription unlock every series?

Rarely. Toomics VIP excludes its coin-only Store titles, Manta keeps some titles Gem-only for members, and MangaPlaza Premium covers only chapters marked Premium.

Is FAKKU Unlimited cheaper by the year?

Barely. The prepaid 365-day card costs $179.00, about $14.71 per 30 days, against $14.95 for a 30-day card. The 90-day card costs exactly three 30-day cards.

What happens when I cancel a comic subscription?

On most services you keep access until the end of the period you paid for and the plan simply does not renew. Patreon, pixivFANBOX, Google Play and Filthy Figments all describe it that way.

Do comic subscriptions have free trials?

A few. MangaPlaza has a one-time 7-day Premium trial, GlobalComix a 7-day trial on its yearly Gold plan, and some Patreon creators offer trials. Toomics has none.
