In short
- Subscribe where the artist posts: Patreon and SubscribeStar keep 10% plus processing, pixivFANBOX 12.9% on R-18 pages, Fantia 12.5% in drawn categories, Ci-en 13% on R-18 plans.
- Buy finished books from stores that pay artists: Irodori Comics (royalties per sale), Affect3D (60% to 70% to the artist), itch.io (the artist sets the store's share, 10% by default).
- Tip: Fantia, Ci-en, SubscribeStar and Honeytoon have tip buttons; WEBTOON has Super Likes, Tapas has Support.
- Ko-fi and Gumroad do not allow explicit comics, so an artist cannot sell porn comics there.
Adult comic artists earn from a mix of memberships, book sales, tips and commissions, and the route you pick decides how much reaches them. A free page on pixiv or Newgrounds is where you find an artist; the paid page they link from it is where they earn. The rest of the guides cover the reader side of paying.
Subscribe on the artist's membership page
A monthly membership is the steadiest income an artist can have, and most adult artists run one. The cut each platform keeps:
| Platform | What the platform keeps | Card statement shows |
|---|---|---|
| Patreon | 10% plus processing (pages published after 2025-08-04) | Patreon is the billing entity; exact wording not published |
| SubscribeStar (adult site) | 10% plus processing of 3% + $0.30 to 10% + $0.40 | SUBSCRIBE STAR |
| pixivFANBOX | 12.9% on R-18 pages, 10% all-ages | PIXIV FANBOX, never the creator's name |
| Fantia | 12.5% in drawn categories | ファンティア or Fantia.jp, not the fan club |
| Ci-en | 13% on R-18 plans, 10% all-ages | Not published |
Patreon allows drawn sexual work only on pages marked Adult/18+, behind the paywall, and only from ID-verified creators. Its public previews must show no nudity, so the free side of an adult artist's page looks tame on purpose. SubscribeStar's adult site calls itself the Number one monetization platform for NSFW digital artists
and now hosts fictional work only, pre-screened before it goes up.
Joining mid-month costs a full month on pixivFANBOX and Fantia, so if you plan to back a Japanese artist, joining at the start of a month gets you more for the same price. On Patreon, fans who join through the iOS app pay through Apple, which takes 30% of the purchase; joining in a web browser avoids that cut.

Buy books from stores that pay the artist
A finished book bought from the right store sends a share to the person who drew it. Irodori Comics licenses doujinshi straight from Japanese artists and says it works to minimize localization costs whilst prioritizing the royalty they receive for each work sold
; the rate is not published. Affect3D pays its 3D artists 60% of each sale, or 70% for exclusive vendors. On itch.io the artist decides what percentage goes to the store (10% by default), and pay-what-you-want pricing lets you pay more than the minimum.
Iron Circus publishes its erotic books and Smut Peddler anthologies from many indie creators and sells every one as a DRM-free PDF. FAKKU licenses and publishes artists' work, though it does not publish its royalty terms. The licensed webtoon services pay through contracts too: Toomics and Lalatoon say profits are shared with the artists they contract with, without figures.
Tip, Super Like or commission
Tips are the smallest and most flexible way to pay, and several platforms build them in. Fantia adds tips to any post; it says the amount goes to the creator apart from fees, and the buyer pays an 8% service fee on top. Ci-en and SubscribeStar have tips too. Honeytoon puts a tip button on each series that reads 100% tips goes to the creators
.
On the non-explicit platforms, WEBTOON readers buy Super Likes in the app ($1 for 5, up to $100 for 500) and the creator earns from them; senders must be 18+. Tapas readers give Ink to creators through its Support program. GlobalComix lets creators switch on donations.
Commissions pay for one piece made for you. Skeb takes 6.8% to 9.8% of a request and charges the client no extra fee; NSFW requests are allowed when flagged and censored. pixiv Requests work the same way from 3,000 JPY.

Dead ends for explicit work
Two platforms that many artists use for safe-for-work art will not carry explicit comics. Gumroad's help page lists Adult comics with nudity or sexual acts
as not allowed, citing Stripe and PayPal. Ko-fi bans pornography across illustrative, video, audio content
, including censored and cropped versions. If an artist's Ko-fi or Gumroad is all you can find, the explicit work lives somewhere else, usually on a Patreon or SubscribeStar link from their profile.
Payment processors also shape the rest. Patreon, SubscribeStar, pixivFANBOX and itch.io all ban certain themes in drawn work, and SubscribeStar, FANBOX and itch.io name payment processors or card networks as the reason. FANBOX suspended older posts in September 2026 after a notice from its payment processor. An artist moving platforms is often reacting to that, and following them to the new page keeps the income going.
Reading for free still counts for something
On WEBTOON's CANVAS section and on Tapas, free reading feeds the creators' ad revenue programs. GlobalComix splits its Gold subscription money among the creators each member reads, by share of pages read. What does not reach anyone is reading a scanned or reposted copy on an aggregator site: no licence, no payment.
The creator side of all this, with fee tables and payout schedules, is on how comic platforms pay creators and creator platform fees. The feature view is on tipping comic creators and creator subscriptions comics; Patreon's own rules are on Patreon for adult comics.
FAQ
Does buying on FAKKU support the artist?
FAKKU licenses and publishes artists' work, so a purchase pays under that licence, but it does not publish its royalty rates. Irodori Comics licenses directly from artists and says it prioritizes their royalty per sale.
Which platform gives artists the biggest cut?
On memberships, Patreon and SubscribeStar keep 10% plus processing, Fantia 12.5% in drawn categories, pixivFANBOX 12.9% and Ci-en 13% on R-18 pages. For single sales, itch.io lets the artist set the store's share.
Can I tip a webtoon creator?
On WEBTOON you buy Super Likes in the app, $1 for 5, and the creator earns from them. Tapas has a Support program paid in Ink, and Honeytoon has a tip button on each series.
What shows on my card when I support an artist?
pixivFANBOX shows PIXIV FANBOX, never the creator's name. Fantia shows ファンティア or Fantia.jp, SubscribeStar shows SUBSCRIBE STAR, and Patreon bills as Patreon.
