What happened

SubscribeStar's adult site, at subscribestar.adult and now branded SubscribeStar.art, had been the subscription platform built for NSFW artists, with drawn and 3D work welcome. Its Prohibited Content page, marked Updated: March 11, 2026, changed that in three ways. It opens: To comply with legal requirements, payment processors, and acquiring bank standards, certain types of content are not permitted.

First, Content where real people are the primary subject is not permitted. Second, All content ... is subject to a pre-screening and review process prior to publication, with identity checks on creators before they publish. Third, the page bans categories of fictional work that were allowed before, among them prohibited family relationships, non-consensual sexual activity and extreme violent sexual content.

What it means for comic artists

SubscribeStar is now a fiction-only platform, and drawn and 3D adult work is still allowed. The theme bans, though, cover themes common in hentai and doujinshi, so some existing comics no longer fit, and every new post waits for review before fans see it.

The money side did not change with the rules: SubscribeStar charges a 10% service fee plus processing of up to 10% + $0.40, pays out on request above a $150 threshold, and holds payouts for small profiles.

The change fits a pattern across creator platforms. Patreon bans incest, non-consent and hypnosis themes in drawn work too, Japanese platforms have suspended posts at processors' request (see the pixivFANBOX suspensions), and Gumroad and Ko-fi do not allow explicit comics at all. A side-by-side of the rules is on creator content rules, and the platforms are ranked for artists on best platforms for adult comic creators. Background on the model is under creator subscription, and more stories are on the news page.
