- WEBTOON has a Mature (18+) rating for sexual themes, but its rules ban nudity and explicit sex, so "adult" there stops short of explicit.

Start with WEBTOON, because that is where most searches for adult webtoons land. WEBTOON lets creators tag a series Mature (18+) and describes it as containing "graphic imagery, violence, profanity, nudity, or sexual themes". Its Content Guidelines then say that "sexual themes and discussions are allowed" while nudity and graphic depictions of sex are not, and they even ban box or mosaic censoring. So a Mature series on WEBTOON can be romantic, violent or suggestive, and it will not be explicit. That is the first meaning of the term.
The second meaning is the one most readers have in mind when they add "18+" or "uncut". These are explicit editions of Korean series, licensed into English and sold by a short list of services. Toomics, Lezhin, TOPTOON Plus, Tappytoon, Manta, Tapas and Honeytoon all carry some, and all of them keep it behind an age switch on the website. Where the word "adult" sits on each service

Two things follow. The rating words are the service's own, so "Mature" on one site and "Full ver." on another do not mean the same amount of explicitness. And a series often exists in two editions: Tappytoon sells Steamy and all-ages versions as separate purchases, and Tapas does the same for Mature and All Ages versions, so unlocks do not carry over.
Where to read adult webtoons legally
The licensed services above are the legal route. Tappytoon, for one, puts "Published by Tappytoon under license from partners" on its title pages. Toomics, Lezhin, Manta and TOPTOON Plus are run by Korean companies, and Honeytoon is a web-only site run from Cyprus. One rule holds across nearly all of them: the 18+ editions are on the website, not in the iPhone or Android app. Toomics' help center says "we are unable to support any kind of adult content within our app", and Lezhin's reply on its App Store listing tells readers to use the website for mature content. Lezhin also distributes an Android APK, Lezhin Comics PLUS, that carries R-rated titles. Apple's guidelines allow incidental NSFW content in an app only if it is hidden by default and turned on through the service's website, which is the pattern these sites follow. How age gates work on Korean services
In Korea the line is 19, not 18. The Youth Protection Act defines a juvenile as a person under 19, with a calendar-year proviso, which is why Korean adult webtoons carry a 19+ label at home. The law also puts a duty on sellers of material harmful to juveniles to verify age and identity, and lewd or obscene material counts as harmful. Webtoons are not named in the act, but electronic publications and information sent over telecom networks are.
Inside Korea that check runs through the mobile carrier or an i-PIN identity service, and Apple's own Korean check needs a Korean mobile number. Foreign readers have neither. No source we found says how Korean law applies to the English-language sites of Korean operators, so what follows is what each service shows on its own pages.
Ratings in Korea are set by the platforms themselves under the Webtoon Self-Regulation Committee, formed in 2012. A Korea Communications Standards Commission official told Asia Economy in 2020 that "since it is literally self-regulation, there are no legal (penalty provisions)." Korean domestic catalogues lean adult: KOMACON data reported by the Korea Herald put adult-only titles at 57.7% of web comics in Korea in 2024, and at 71.3% of Lezhin Comics' Korean catalogue. Those are Korean catalogues, not the English sites.
The English sites run lighter checks:
- Toomics asks "Are you over the age of 18?" to turn off Family Safe mode, and readers in Singapore, Korea, Japan, Malaysia and Indonesia are told to contact support for a separate check.
- Lezhin and Lalatoon send you to log in first; Lalatoon then asks the same yes or no question.
- Manta takes the age you enter when you create the account and does not let you change it.
- Tapas wants a login plus a typed birthdate.
- Honeytoon uses a click-through, and an ID check through Yoti where local law requires one.
- WEBTOON takes a birthdate at sign-up, and Mature series stay locked for accounts under 18.
Apart from Honeytoon's Yoti case, all of these are self-declarations. Separately, our research found no statement that every character is an adult on Toomics, Lalatoon, Honeytoon, Manta, Lezhin, TOPTOON Plus or Tappytoon. Toomics and Lalatoon ban sexual content involving minors in their terms, and the others publish less, so read a series page before you pay for it.
Free adult webtoons
Free reading is real but short. The numbers differ by service:
- Toomics: the first three chapters of a series, sometimes more. Its help center says there is no way to read the rest free.
- Tappytoon: free first episodes, one Time Till Free episode every 24 hours on marked titles, and weekly Free Tickets that open an episode for 48 hours.
- Manta: the first few episodes, plus a Free Pass on 400+ titles that unlocks one episode for 72 hours and resets every 24 hours.
- Lalatoon: first episodes, then one Wait Till It's Free coupon 72 hours after reading an episode, not valid on the latest 20 episodes.
- TOPTOON Plus: the first few episodes, but only after logging in.
- Honeytoon: a prologue and a few episodes per series.
- WEBTOON: ORIGINALS free on a weekly schedule, with the newest episodes behind coin-priced Fast Pass.
Tapas has free timers too, but they work in the app only, and the Mature section is web only, so they do not reach explicit titles. Tapas is also closing: Kakao Entertainment announced that the service ends on 2027-03-31, Ink can no longer be bought, and unlocked episodes become inaccessible. Do not start a library there.
