In short

  • Manhwa is the English word for Korean comics; webtoon is the vertical, episodic digital format most of them now use.
  • Lezhin, Manta, TOPTOON Plus, Toomics and Lalatoon are Korean-run services with English sites; Tappytoon licenses Korean series from their publishers.
  • Korea's adult line is 19. In Korea about 58% of web comics were adult-only in 2024, according to KOMACON figures.
  • The 18+ editions on the English stores are on their websites, not in their apps.

Start with the words, because the search results mix them. In English, manhwa means Korean comics. In Korean the same word covers comics of any origin. Anime News Network's lexicon draws the same line for the Chinese word manhua, which in English refers only to comics of Chinese origin. The Oxford English Dictionary added manhwa among 26 Korean-origin words in its September 2021 update.

Webtoon is a format. Merriam-Webster defines it as "a type of digital comic published online, formatted vertically, and released in episodes", and dates the Korean weptun to as early as 1994. It is also the trademarked name of the Naver platform, so this site writes WEBTOON in capitals for the service and lowercase for the format. Put the two together and adult manhwa on a phone is nearly always an adult webtoon: Korean in origin, vertical in layout. Adult webtoons and adult manhwa describe the same shelf, one named by its format and the other by its country.

The Korean publishers with English stores

Lezhin Comics is the US English store of a Korean publisher, run by Lezhin Entertainment, LLC. It sells episodes for coins, with no subscription, and keeps its R-rated titles on the website and a separate Android APK. Manta is the English app of RIDI Corporation, a Korean company, and combines a membership library of 300+ series with pay-per-episode Gems. TOPTOON Plus is the English site of the Korean platform Toptoon, run by TOPCO GLOBAL INC. It dropped coins for a membership, and the 81 titles its genre list returns logged out are all flagged non-mature, which means the adult part of the catalogue opens only in the account's NSFW mode.

Toomics Global Co., Ltd. is based in Seoul and also lists entities in the UK, US, Japan and Thailand. Its English site sells mainly a VIP subscription, and its home page claims "50,000+ episodes". Lalatoon is its sister service at the same Seoul address, with a BL, GL and romance lean and pay-per-episode clovers. In February 2026 the news was that Toomics' largest shareholder said no sale adviser had been hired and the company was seeking new investment, with the service running normally; a later Korean report said the shareholder's own stake was up for sale, and the outcome is unconfirmed.

Tappytoon differs: it is run by Contents First, Inc. and its title pages read "Published by Tappytoon under license from partners". It stores licensed Korean series from partners instead of running a Korean publisher's own storefront, and it labels its 18+ editions [Steamy] and [Uncut]. WEBTOON, the best-known Korean-run name, is operated by NAVER WEBTOON Ltd. and is not an adult-manhwa store at all, since its rules ban nudity and graphic sex. Honeytoon, a web-only adult site run from Cyprus, also sells adult webtoons and sits outside this list.

What the 19 means

The Youth Protection Act defines a juvenile as a person under 19, with a calendar-year proviso, so Korean adult webtoons are labelled 19+ at home. Sellers of media harmful to juveniles must verify age and identity, and lewd or obscene material is classed as harmful. Inside Korea that check goes through the mobile carrier or an i-PIN service. The English sites do not use it: readers abroad have neither a Korean phone number nor an i-PIN, and no source we found says how the Korean law applies to the English-language sites. They set their own gates at 18, mostly a typed birthdate or an on-screen confirmation, and each lists its switch in how to find adult webtoons.

Ratings in Korea are set by the platforms under the Webtoon Self-Regulation Committee, which a regulator described in 2020 as "literally self-regulation". Adult content is a large share of the home market: Korea Herald reported KOMACON data showing adult-only titles at 57.7% of web comics in Korea in 2024, with Bomtoon at 83.4%, Jjang Manhwa at 82% and Lezhin Comics at 71.3%. Kakao Webtoon was at 6.6% and Naver Webtoon at 5.2%. Those are Korean catalogues; the English stores carry a licensed selection of them.

Translations and languages

English editions of Korean series are made by the stores themselves or their licensors, and the credit line on a title page names the publisher. Language coverage differs. Lezhin's US site is English. Tappytoon offers comics in English, French and German. Toomics and Lalatoon each list eleven site languages, including Chinese, Japanese and Korean. Manta runs English and Spanish, with a smaller Spanish catalogue, and Honeytoon offers eight languages.

The same series can have a different title, edition or censoring on each store, and some are missing in certain regions: Tappytoon notes that availability varies by language, region or country. Scan sites that circulate unlicensed fan translations of the same series are a separate matter, covered in licensed versus pirated comic sites; we do not link to them, and the ranked adult webtoon platforms list sticks to licensed stores.

Genres the manhwa shelves lean on

Lezhin, Tappytoon, Manta, Toomics, Lalatoon and TOPTOON Plus all have Romance and BL shelves, and Toomics, Lalatoon and TOPTOON Plus add Historical and Drama. Genre pages go further: adult drama manhwa, adult thriller manhwa and historical romance manhwa 18+. When a store's rating words matter, NSFW webtoons explains the labels, and for a head-to-head of two of these publishers there is Toomics versus Lezhin. The webtoons hub has the rest.

FAQ

What is the difference between manhwa and webtoon?

Manhwa means Korean comics in English. Webtoon is the format: a digital comic published online, laid out vertically, released in episodes. Most current Korean comics are both.

Where can I read adult manhwa legally?

On licensed services such as Lezhin, Manta, TOPTOON Plus, Toomics, Lalatoon and Tappytoon. Their 18+ editions are on the websites, behind a login and an age confirmation.

Why is the Korean adult age 19?

The Youth Protection Act defines a juvenile as a person under 19. The English sites use 18 for their own age gates.

Is adult manhwa free?

Only in part. The services give away first episodes or timed free passes, and the rest is paid by coin, point, Gem or subscription.
