Vertical scroll comic

A vertical scroll comic is laid out as one continuous strip that you read by scrolling down, with no page turns. It is the native format of webtoons and is built for phone screens.

In short

What vertical scroll means

In a vertical scroll comic the panels sit in a single column, often with large gaps of empty space between them. The reader controls the pacing with a thumb instead of a page turn. Episodes are short and numerous, which suits per-episode pricing (see pay per chapter).

Webtoons are so closely bound to the format that the dictionary definition of a webtoon includes it. Tapas tells its creators to format series for the scroller setup, and WEBTOON publishes both its ORIGINALS and its open CANVAS section in vertical scroll.

Where adult comics use it

Korean adult webtoon platforms are vertical by default: Lezhin, TOPTOON Plus and Honeytoon all publish episodic webtoons. Apps that mix formats, such as INKR and MangaToon, carry vertical webtoons next to paged manga; MangaToon's store text promises you can scroll mangas & webtoons smoothly.

Paged formats still dominate explicit manga and western comics. FAKKU and Irodori Comics sell paged books, and Iron Circus Comics sells DRM-free PDFs.

Reading downloaded files as a strip

If you buy files, a reader app decides how they scroll. Perfect Viewer has a Vertical scroll mode (PDF viewer,webtoon like), YACReader offers continuous vertical scroll on iOS and Android, Panels has a vertical mode aimed at manhwa readers, and the self-hosted Kavita server has a webtoon mode. Is manga vertical scroll?

Traditionally no: manga is drawn in pages. Some apps display manga in a continuous scroll, but the panels were laid out for pages.

Is vertical scroll better than pages?
