Hentai manga platforms

pixiv is free to view, and every other kind of hentai manga platform charges: licensed English publishers such as FAKKU, artist fan clubs such as Fantia, commission sites such as Skeb, and indie stores such as itch.io. Each pays the artist differently, and the Japan-hosted fan clubs leave the creator about 87% of R-18 income and censor everything.

In short

  • Four types: licensed English publishers (FAKKU, Irodori Comics), artist fan clubs (pixivFANBOX, Fantia, Ci-en), art communities and commissions (pixiv, Skeb), and indie stores (itch.io).
  • Fan clubs pay the creator about 87% of R-18 income (FANBOX 87.1%, Fantia 87.5%, Ci-en 87% on plans).
  • Only the licensed English publishers sell uncensored editions; the Japan-hosted platforms require mosaics.
  • Payment is the weak point: card networks have forced shutdowns, suspensions and rule changes since 2022.

Licensed publishers: FAKKU and Irodori Comics

FAKKU and Irodori Comics translate Japanese work and sell it in English. FAKKU says it licenses; it has no creator sign-up page and hosts no uploads. Irodori says it works directly with artists. What either pays them is not published, so the only number a reader can check is the price: FAKKU's 30-day Unlimited card is $14.95 and its yearly card is $179, about $14.92 a month, while Irodori's singles run $5.25 to $14.95.

These are the only platforms here that sell uncensored editions. They sell to adults who confirm their age by a checkbox or a terms affirmation, they refuse certain themes that card networks forbid, and each has a limit of its own: FAKKU lost its processor in December 2025, and Irodori blocks users in Japan from uncensored content. The two shops are compared at FAKKU versus Irodori.

Artist fan clubs: FANBOX, Fantia and Ci-en

On a fan club, you pledge a monthly amount to one creator and see what that creator posts. The three Japanese services take roughly 13% of R-18 money:

  • pixivFANBOX keeps 12.9% of pledges when R-18 is on and 10% for all-ages pages (since 2025-09-01). Plans run from 100 to 10,000 yen. Payouts go by Japanese bank transfer or PayPal, with a 5,000 yen minimum for monthly Auto-Payout.
  • Fantia keeps 12.5% of drawn-category sales and 17.5% in live-action categories (since 2025-12-01), and 30% on lottery and meet goods. Each payout request costs 330 yen, and overseas payouts need 50,000 yen in sales.
  • Ci-en keeps 13% of R-18 plan income, 10% of all-ages plans and 15% of one-off articles. Bank transfer has a 5,000 yen minimum per sales type, and viviON points have none.

On a 1,000 yen Fantia sale the creator keeps 875 yen; a 330 yen transfer fee on a payout of just that amount leaves 545 yen. A 1,000 yen R-18 FANBOX pledge leaves the creator 871 yen before any transfer cost. Readers pay in yen, and foreign card options have narrowed since Fantia suspended Visa and Mastercard in May 2024. The two main ones are compared in FANBOX versus Fantia, and each has its own entry at pixivFANBOX and Fantia.

Art communities and commissions: pixiv and Skeb

pixiv is where most Japanese hentai and doujin artists post R-18 work for free. Every work is free to view, and R-18 needs an account aged 18 or over with the R-18 display setting switched on from the website. pixiv Premium ($4.15 a month, $41.41 for 12 months) adds search and removes ads, and does not unlock works or pay artists. Artists earn through Requests, where pixiv keeps 10%, and through FANBOX and BOOTH. Accounts set to the US, UK, EU, Canada, Australia or New Zealand get extra content limits. See pixiv R-18.

Skeb works the other way round from a subscription: a fan commissions one drawn piece or comic page for a fixed price, with no retakes or messaging. Points are 1 point = 1 yen and non-refundable. The creator keeps 90.2% to 93.2% of the request amount, depending on conditions that cut the up-to-9.8% request fee, and payouts go only to Japanese bank accounts or Kyash. NSFW is allowed when flagged and censored, and files whose censor layer can be removed are rejected.

Indie stores: itch.io

itch.io is not a Japanese service, and the research found no mosaic rule there. Artists sell comics as DRM-free downloads at prices they set, including free and pay-what-you-want. The default share to itch.io is 10%, plus processor fees of about $0.30 + 2.9% a sale, so on a $10 sale the platform fee is $1.00 and the processor about $0.59. Payouts go to PayPal or Stripe direct, or through itch.io, with a $5 minimum in collected mode.

The risk here is payments. In July 2025 itch.io removed all adult NSFW pages from browse and search after pressure on its processors, suspended Stripe for 18+ pages, and re-indexed free adult pages on 2025-07-31; paid adult pages have not been announced as re-indexed. Patreon and SubscribeStar also host drawn adult work for creators (both take 10%), with ID verification on Patreon and pre-screening of all posts on SubscribeStar. Gumroad and Ko-fi do not allow it. The ranked list that includes itch.io is best hentai manga sites.

When a platform loses its card processor

Visa Japan's president said in 2024 that it is sometimes necessary to deny use of cards for legal adult purchases to protect the brand. Mastercard says it allows all lawful purchases and requires merchants to block unlawful ones. Meanwhile the platforms have changed. Fantia, Toranoana and Melonbooks dropped Visa and Mastercard; FAKKU's processor ended its account; Stripe dropped Manga Planet over R18 content in January 2025.

Manga Planet shows the worst outcome. It closed its digital service on 2026-03-31 citing restrictions from payment processors, with no refunds on points or content, and Renta! ran a library transfer for eligible purchases until 2026-07-31. Files you keep are the cover against that: Irodori's DRM-free PDFs and FAKKU's book downloads are yours, while coins and subscription libraries are not. See DRM-free hentai downloads for who hands over files, how to support adult comic creators for where the money lands, and where to buy doujinshi for the shopping side. FAQ

How do hentai manga artists get paid?

It depends on the platform type. Licensed publishers pay under a license whose terms are not published. Fan clubs such as FANBOX, Fantia and Ci-en pass about 87% of R-18 income to the creator. pixiv Requests pay 90%, Skeb 90.2% to 93.2%, and itch.io lets the creator keep the sale minus a default 10% and processor fees.

What is the difference between FAKKU and Fantia?

FAKKU licenses and sells English editions and says they are uncensored. Fantia is a Japanese fan club platform where creators sell their own plans and downloads with mandatory mosaics.

Why do Japanese platforms censor hentai manga?

They operate under Article 175 of Japan's Penal Code, which bans distributing obscene drawings. pixiv, FANBOX, Fantia, Ci-en and Skeb all require mosaics or solid bars on genitals and penetration.

Which platform is safest if card networks change rules?

None is safe from that. Platforms that let you download DRM-free files, such as Irodori Comics and itch.io, leave you with the file if the store later changes its payment options.
