In short

  • BL is the industry label for commercial male/male romance marketed to women.
  • It can be romance-focused or graphically sexual; the label does not say which.
  • Yaoi started as a doujinshi term. In Japan it now mostly points to the sex scenes; in the West it became a catchall.
  • BL is a standard genre tab on webtoon and manga platforms, with explicit BL usually behind an 18+ switch.

BL meaning

Anime News Network's lexicon: Boy's Love (BL) is the usual term used by the Japanese publishing industry to categorize commercial works focusing on male/male relationships marketed at women. It adds that BL can refer both to content that focuses on romance, as well as content that is graphically sexual. So a BL tag tells you the pairing and the audience, not how explicit a book is.

BL and yaoi

Yaoi began as a term in self-published doujinshi. According to the same lexicon, in Japan it is mainly used to point to the sex scenes and is no longer a genre label, while in the West it became a catchall for male/male manga. On English stores both words appear: FAKKU uses Yaoi as a tag, and itch.io lists Yaoi and Bara among the tags on its adult comics.

Where BL shows up on platforms

BL has its own genre tab on most of the English webtoon and manga platforms we cover. Tapas, Lezhin, Lalatoon, INKR, WebComics, TOPTOON Plus and MangaToon all list it, and MangaPlaza and BookWalker list Boys' Love among their manga genres.

The explicit versions sit behind a gate. Tapas keeps a "BL Hot Picks" shelf in its web-only Mature section (the service closes on March 31, 2027). Lezhin's adult BL needs its logged-in 18+ switch, and MangaPlaza's adult titles need its 18+ setting. Lalatoon, which sells BL episodes at 3 clovers each, hides 18+ content behind an account.

For reading lists, see adult manga sites, erotic webtoons and adult manhwa. The women's counterpart is GL, and other terms are in the glossary.

FAQ

What is the difference between BL and yaoi?

BL is the publishing label and covers both romance and explicit work. Yaoi is the older fan term; in Japan it now mostly refers to sex scenes, while English readers use it loosely for any male/male manga.

Is BL the same as gay manga?

Not exactly. BL is defined by its audience, women. Stores often tag other male/male work separately: itch.io, for instance, has its own Gay and Bara tags.

Where can I read explicit BL legally?

On licensed platforms with an 18+ section, such as Lezhin's website, MangaPlaza with its 18+ setting on, and FAKKU's Yaoi tag. Store apps usually carry only the all-ages versions.
