NSFW comics

NSFW comics are adult webcomics that artists publish on their own sites, usually free to read, and fund through Patreon, SubscribeStar, itch.io, Kickstarter and print books. Oglaf, a weekly fantasy sex comedy with 2,845 paid Patreon members, shows the model: the strip is free and the supporters pay for the extras.

In short

  • Most NSFW comics are artist-run webcomics: free on the artist's site, with paid chapters, bonus pages and books on the side.
  • itch.io lists 1,630 NSFW comics and takes a default 10% cut; Patreon takes 10% on pages published after August 4, 2025.
  • SubscribeStar allows explicit fictional work after ID screening; Newgrounds bans AI art and asset-based 3D renders.
  • Gumroad does not allow adult comics with nudity or sexual acts, so artists do not sell there.

Oglaf is the template. The strip comes out on Sundays, the whole archive is free behind an 18+ click-through, and books and PDFs are sold through TopatoCo. Book Five was crowdfunded on Kickstarter and funded on October 23, 2026, with a $10 pledge getting the PDF and $26 the book. The Patreon page shows 2,845 paid members. Free comic, paid extras: that arrangement runs through most of what readers call NSFW comics.

How NSFW webcomics are published

The comic lives on the artist's own domain, where the artist controls the layout and the archive. A few features come up again and again: an age click-through, a Patreon or SubscribeStar link in the sidebar, a shop page for books, and sometimes a link to a studio site such as Slipshine, which hosts The Rock Cocks on a subdomain.

Titles with files on our side show how different the arrangements are:

TitleRead freePaid side
OglafFull archive, weeklyTopatoCo books ($24.00 print, $13.00 PDF each for Books 1 to 4), Patreon
The CummonerThe webcomicPaid chapters at $5.99 on itch.io, Patreon, SubscribeStar, print via Kickstarter
The Rock CocksFull archivePatreon and SubscribeStar bonuses
Ménage à 3Strips, completed 2019Print volumes at $9.99, digital on Kindle, colour edition on Patreon
Oh Joy Sex ToyFull archive, TuesdaysPatreon membership and PDFs, print via Amazon
CurvyFull archiveThe Complete Curvy from Iron Circus: $50 print, $25 PDF

Oh Joy Sex Toy stretches the label. It is a non-fiction sex-education and product-review comic, free on its own site, with a sponsor banner and retailer affiliate links on its shop page. It shows up in NSFW searches and belongs on the less explicit end of the term.

Where the money comes from

Patreon lets creators put drawn and animated sexual work on paywalled Adult/18+ pages. The creator passes age and ID verification first, public previews must show no nudity, and fans self-attest 18+ in a settings toggle. For pages published after August 4, 2025 the fee is 10%, before processing, currency and payout costs. Incest and sexual violence are banned there in every format, and drawn characters have to come across as adults. Creators who need the detail will find it in content rules for creators.

SubscribeStar's adult site is built for NSFW digital artists and says so on its home page. It takes a 10% service fee on the adult site plus processing from 3% + $0.30 to 10% + $0.40, and since March 11, 2026 it hosts fictional work only, with every post pre-screened. Real people are barred, and so are minor-looking characters, incest and non-consent. Its payout threshold is a $150 balance for most creators.

itch.io is where artists sell finished comics as files. The default split is 10% to the site, and its own worked example is a $10 sale netting $8.41 after the 10% and processor fees of about $0.30 + 2.9%. A $5.99 chapter such as The Cummoner's would therefore net about $4.92 at the default rate. Payouts run to PayPal or Stripe directly, or through itch.io in collected mode with a $5.00 minimum. The site warns that Stripe does not take sexually explicit sales.

That warning dates from July 2025, when itch.io removed all adult NSFW pages from browse and search after payment processors raised concerns. Free adult pages returned to browse on July 31, 2025. Paid NSFW comics are showing again, though we found no announcement with a date. Our note on the delisting has the sequence.

Where artists post for free

Newgrounds sorts everything by E, T, M and A ratings, and adult work is rated A, including blurred or censored porn. The rules are blunt: you must be the creator, AI-generated art is banned from the Art Portal, Daz3D-style asset renders are generally refused, and members under 18 may not post adult art. A comic with even one necessary A panel is rated A as a whole. That mix keeps most 3D porn comics off the site. The site does not show how A-rated art is unlocked for guests, because the live pages were blocked to our checks.

DeviantArt has a "Display Mature Content" toggle in the header, and its Etiquette Policy tells members to tag nudity, sexual themes and gore. It bars content that sexually exploits children, real or fictional. Artists there can sell subscriptions through Core tiers, and the platform fee runs from 2.5% to 15% depending on the tier. We could not read DeviantArt's help article on sexual themes, so what counts as allowed in a public gallery is not stated here.

How to read them without paying

Artist sites are the cheapest route. Start on the artist's page, read the free archive, and pay only if you want paid chapters or books. On itch.io, 218 comics tagged NSFW are free, out of 1,630 in browse; 903 appear in the top-selling list; and 461 carry the Adult tag. Many are pay-what-you-want. The listing is behind a date-of-birth gate with a remember-this-browser box.

Studio archives work differently from artist sites and are listed in porn comics. The free side of everything above sits in free adult comics sites, and the ranked options are in the best NSFW comics sites list. Artists weighing which platform to sell on can start with best platforms for adult comic creators. For the overall map, go back to the comics section.

FAQ

Are NSFW comics free?

The comic is often free on the artist's site. Oglaf, The Rock Cocks, Curvy and Oh Joy Sex Toy all have free archives, and the money comes from Patreon, books and bonus content.

Where do NSFW comic artists make money?

Patreon, SubscribeStar and itch.io for digital sales, Kickstarter and shop pages for print. Gumroad does not allow adult comics with nudity or sexual acts.

Can I read NSFW comics on itch.io without an account?

The NSFW browse pages show a date-of-birth gate with Month, Day and Year selectors. The files do not say whether downloading needs an account, and paid titles do.

Does Newgrounds allow AI-made NSFW comics?

No. Its Art Portal rules ban AI-generated art, and it refuses most asset-based 3D renders.
