In short
- "Adult comics" means mature-rated work on one shelf and explicit work on another, and the big reading apps carry only the first.
- GlobalComix costs $6.99 a month or $69 a year, and it does not accept explicitly sexual stories.
- WEBTOON locks Mature series for accounts under 18 and bans nudity; INKR puts its Mature section behind an 18+ click-through and a sign-in.
- App store ratings are weak evidence: WEBTOON and INKR both carry a 13+ rating on iOS.
GlobalComix is the cleanest example of where mainstream adult comics end. It publishes mature themes, allows nudity "when not in context of depicting sexual acts", and refuses stories whose premise is pornographic. Anyone searching "adult comics" for explicit work has to move to a different kind of site, covered under the comics section.
Mature-rated versus explicit
Services use two different ideas under one word. A mature rating warns that a series contains violence, strong language, sexual themes or nudity. It lets the service sell a horror comic or a romance with a bedroom scene to adults only. An explicit comic is made around sex and is sold as such, and the platforms that carry it say so in their policies.
| Level | What it allows | Where it sits |
|---|---|---|
| General | Mild themes, no nudity | Free tiers on WEBTOON, GlobalComix, INKR |
| Mature rated | Sexual themes, violence, language; limited or no nudity | WEBTOON Mature series, GlobalComix, INKR Mature section, publisher imprints |
| Explicit | Sex shown as the point of the story | Studio sites and stores such as Slipshine and Iron Circus |
GlobalComix
GlobalComix covers western comics, manga and webtoons. Its Gold membership is $6.99 a month or $69 a year, which works out to $5.75 a month on the yearly plan, and the yearly plan has a 7-day free trial that needs a card up front. The site says Gold covers 100k+ titles (its own figure). Free comics and free preview pages stay open, while paid pages need Gold. Cancelling is under Account Settings, then Subscriptions.
The content policy rules out anything with a pornographic premise or graphic sex, sexual violence, minors in a sexual manner and fully generative AI art. Browse pages show "Safe Mode is active" with an Advisory Flags filter. How Safe Mode gets switched off was not visible without an account, so we cannot say how the age check works. The iOS app is rated 17+ in the App Store and Mature 17+ on Google Play.
In March 2026 GlobalComix acquired INKR, so the two now share an owner (details in the acquisition note).
WEBTOON Mature
WEBTOON is free to start: its ORIGINALS release on a weekly schedule, newer episodes sit behind Fast Pass (paid in coins), and Ad Pass episodes open for 3 days after you watch ads. Mature (18+) series allow sexual themes, but the content rules ban nudity, mosaic or box censoring, and explicit sex scenes. The age check is a birthdate entered at sign-up, and Mature series are unavailable to accounts that say they are under 18. The company says that in some regions extra steps such as guardian consent may apply.
WEBTOON Premium starts at $3.99 a month. In-app coins are bought only in the app, and subscriptions are managed through the App Store or Google Play. Its rules also ban incest, bestiality, glorified sexual violence and any sexualised character under 18, so a mature rating there is about tone and theme. For webtoons that do go further, see adult webtoons.
INKR
INKR mixes manga, manhua, webtoons and indie studios in one app. Free titles come with ads, and Ink earned from tasks rents certain chapters. Coins cost $1.99 for 32 on iOS, about 6.2 cents each, and an INKR Extra plan is $4.99 on iOS and includes offline downloads. Its Mature section shows a notice that content may contain violence, sex, nudity or strong language, asks you to click that you are over 18, and then sends you to sign in. What sits behind that gate was not visible to us, and the terms forbid users from posting sexually explicit or pornographic material.
How age ratings work on these services
Three separate systems stack up. WEBTOON and INKR check age by self-declaration, and for GlobalComix the method is unconfirmed.
- The service's own rating. WEBTOON and INKR tag individual series, and GlobalComix uses Advisory Flags. These decide what a gate hides.
- The gate. WEBTOON takes a birthdate at sign-up. INKR takes an 18+ click-through. These are self-declarations, so the check is only as strict as the date you type.
- The app store rating. WEBTOON shows 13+ on the App Store and INKR 13+ on iOS, while GlobalComix shows 17+. Apple's guidelines require honest answers to the age-rating questions, which is the number the store shows.
Store rules shape what these apps can carry. Apple's guidelines let an app show incidental NSFW material only if it is hidden by default and switched on through the service's website. Google Play allows sexual titles in a book or video catalog only as a minor fraction of the whole, unpromoted and with minors restricted. Both limits apply to the iOS and Android builds of the apps above.
Publishers and imprints
Print publishers label the book itself. Image Comics lists the new edition of Sunstone, an erotic romance about two women and their BDSM relationship, with an Age Rating of M and a $9.99 cover price for volume 1 (128 pages, February 11, 2026). It reaches readers through bookstores and Amazon, not a membership. Our files do not cover the mature lines of the larger publishers, so this page does not rank them.
Independent publishers sit closer to the explicit end. Iron Circus sells erotic graphic novels as print books and DRM-free PDFs, and its Erotica collection holds 38 products. Slipshine is a members archive. Both are covered in erotic comics and porn comics.
Choosing a shelf
If the goal is romance, thrillers or horror with adult themes, the mature shelves above are enough and the free tiers carry a lot. If it is explicit work, the ranked picks are in the best adult comics sites list, and free adult comics sites covers what costs nothing. For the settings that unlock each service's adult shelf, how to find adult comics walks through them.
FAQ
What is the difference between adult comics and porn comics?
Adult comics is the broader term and includes mature-rated stories with no explicit sex. Porn comics are explicit by definition. The term page for porn comics lists the sites that sell them.
Does WEBTOON have adult comics?
It has Mature (18+) series with sexual themes, locked for accounts under 18. Its rules ban nudity and explicit sex, so nothing there is explicit.
Can GlobalComix show nudity?
Its FAQ says nudity is allowed when it is not part of depicting sexual acts. Explicitly sexual stories are not accepted.
Do these sites verify my age?
Not in the files we checked. WEBTOON asks for a birthdate at sign-up, INKR asks you to confirm you are over 18, and GlobalComix's method is unconfirmed.
Is the INKR Mature section explicit?
Unknown. The section is gated and we did not see its contents. INKR's terms bar users from posting sexually explicit material.
