Hentai meaning in Japanese and in English
The two languages use the word differently. Anime News Network's lexicon: In Japanese "Hentai" refers strictly to sexual perversion. However in North America this word has been adopted and is used to refer to pornographic Anime.
In Japan the same material is called ero, or poruno for animation.

How platforms use the word
English-language stores use "hentai" as a shelf label, since that is what readers search for. FAKKU, which licenses Japanese adult manga and doujinshi in English, describes its Unlimited catalog as completely uncensored English hentai comics
. Irodori Comics licenses doujinshi directly from the artists and sells them as uncensored PDFs. On SubscribeStar, artists tag their pages #Hentai.
Some platforms use the word to draw a line. GlobalComix, a general comics platform, says explicitly sexual stories (such as Hentai)
are not accepted. Japanese platforms such as pixiv, pixivFANBOX and Fantia allow R-18 work but require mosaics on all of it, so the uncensored question comes up constantly (see why hentai is censored).
Hentai, ecchi and porn comics
