In short
- SubscribeStar is the like-for-like swap: explicit drawn and 3D work, subscriptions and tips, a 10% service fee, but a $150 balance before the first payout.
- itch.io has an open revenue share (default 10%), pays out on request, and sells finished comics as DRM-free files.
- FANBOX takes 12.9% with R-18 on, Fantia 12.5% on drawn work and Ci-en 13% on R-18 monthly plans. All three require mosaics.
- Gumroad bans adult comics and Ko-fi bans pornography in illustrated work, so neither is a pick.
Why NSFW artists look for a Patreon alternative
Patreon still allows sexual work between non-real subjects (drawn, animated or written) on paywalled Adult/18+ pages, so the reasons to leave are specific, and most are on its own pages.
- Fees. Pages published after August 4, 2025 pay a 10% platform fee plus card processing of 2.9% + $0.30. On a $10 pledge that leaves $8.41 before a payout fee. Older pages may sit on a 5%, 8% or 11% plan.
- Themes. Patreon bans sexualized incest, sexual violence and non-consent in every format, hand-drawn work included, and hypnosis themes are barred in drawn work too.
- Exposure. Adult/18+ creators pass ID and selfie verification, public previews and banners must carry no nudity, and fans in regions where the law restricts adult works are blocked.
- Apple. Apple told Patreon to move all creators to subscription billing inside its iOS app, first with a November 2025 deadline, paused in May 2025 and reinstated in January 2026 with a deadline of November 1, 2026. Web sign-up avoids Apple's fees, which are 30% on iOS purchases. Commerce sales bought through iOS in-app purchase stay pending up to 75 days, against 7 days on web and Android. The outcome at the deadline has not been reported. Our note on the Apple billing deadline follows it.
The Patreon creator profile has the full rule set; artists whose work leans on banned themes, or who want a bigger share, have reasons to compare.

The best Patreon alternatives for NSFW artists
itch.io
Best for setting your own cut
- Price
- Free
- Type
- open indie marketplace with an NSFW comics section
- Formats
- western comics, doujinshi, 3D comics
- Free reading
- Yes
itch.io is an open indie marketplace where artists sell comics as DRM-free downloads and decide how much of each sale goes to the site. The default is 10%. Using itch.io's worked example for a $10 sale, the default rate plus $0.30 and 2.9% leaves $8.41, exactly what Patreon leaves, so the saving comes only if you lower the share.
Adult pages must be marked sensitive and complete content warnings. After July 2025, itch.io deindexed adult NSFW pages, suspended Stripe for 18+ pages and re-indexed free adult pages on July 31; paid adult pages have not been announced as re-indexed. Payouts need at least $5.00 and a review of 7 to 14 days.
SubscribeStar

- Price
- Price not confirmed
- Type
- subscription platform for NSFW digital artists (adult site) with a separate SFW site
- Formats
- western comics, manga, 3D comics
- Free reading
- Not confirmed
SubscribeStar's adult site is built for NSFW digital artists: subscriptions, tips, paid posts and commissions, with a 10% service fee and processing from 3% + $0.30 to 10% + $0.40. You choose whether you or subscribers cover processing. Real people are banned. A March 2026 rule update bans incest and non-consent themes and pre-screens every post, and creators pass KYC before publishing.
Cash comes slowly. A balance of $150 (some US creators $30) is required, requests go out at most every 10 business days, and the platform may hold 10% of collected funds, not less than $35, for 30 business days. Our Patreon vs SubscribeStar comparison goes through both.
Fantia
Lowest fee for drawn work in Japan
- Price
- Free
- Type
- creator support platform (fan club plans, digital and physical goods, commissions)
- Formats
- manga, doujinshi
- Free reading
- Yes
Fantia, Toranoana's fan club platform, takes 12.5% of sales on illustration and manga, 17.5% on live-action and 30% on lottery goods (rates since December 1, 2025). On a 1,000 JPY plan an artist keeps 875 JPY before a 330 JPY transfer fee per request. Buyers pay an extra 8% on goods and tips but not on illustration and manga plans.
Conditions are strict. Every creator submits photo ID, mosaics or thick bars are mandatory, and overseas creators are paid only if they live abroad permanently and have 50,000 JPY in sales. Fantia has taken no Visa or Mastercard since May 21, 2024, so cards are limited to JCB and American Express.
Ci-en
Best for doujin projects with progress updates
- Price
- Free
- Type
- creator support platform (monthly plans, crowdfunding, one-off articles) run by DLsite's operator
- Formats
- manga, doujinshi
- Free reading
- Yes
Ci-en is DLsite's own fan site, and it is in this list because the creator rules are published. Monthly plans cost 10% on all-ages and 13% on R-18, crowdfunding is 10% or 15%, and one-off articles 15%. Ci-en pays domestic transfer fees. A 1,000 JPY R-18 plan leaves 870 JPY.
It suits circles that post progress diaries and perks around a larger release, with links to their DLsite works. Bank payouts have a 5,000 JPY minimum per sales type, and overseas creators without a Japanese account can use PayPal in JPY or take viviON points. R-18 work needs concealment, live-action sexual content and AI-led work are banned, and card payments are limited to JCB.
pixivFANBOX
Best for reaching pixiv's audience
- Price
- Free
- Type
- creator subscription platform (monthly fan plans)
- Formats
- manga
- Free reading
- Yes
FANBOX is pixiv's monthly plan service, with plans of 100 to 10,000 JPY. Since September 1, 2025 it takes 12.9% of pledges when R-18 is on and 10% for all-ages pages, so a 1,000 JPY R-18 pledge leaves 871 JPY. Payouts go to a Japanese bank or PayPal (no transfer fee), automatically within five business days of the 20th, or early on request.
FANBOX can switch a creator to R-18 on its own, mosaics are mandatory, and on September 25, 2026 artists reported suspensions of posts, some years old, under its revision policy, with notices citing a payment processor. Our Patreon vs FANBOX page covers the differences.
Platforms that do not take explicit comics
Gumroad is a common suggestion, and it is out. Its help article lists "Adult comics with nudity or sexual acts" as not eligible for sale, citing Stripe and PayPal. TechCrunch reported the tightening on March 15, 2024. You cannot list the work, whatever its fees. See Gumroad for creators and the Gumroad adult content report.
Ko-fi's rules ban pornography and sexualized nudity in illustrated work, including censored and cropped versions, and it bars censored previews that sell uncensored versions elsewhere. It charges 0% on one-off tips on its Free plan and 5% on memberships and shop sales. It suits tips on safe-for-work art; see Ko-fi for creators.

How to choose
If your audience reads English and you want monthly subscriptions, SubscribeStar is the only direct match, with the slower first payout. For finished comics sold once, itch.io fits and costs least when you lower its share. For Japanese readers, compare the three by theme rules and fees: Fantia for drawn work, Ci-en for circles with DLsite releases, FANBOX for pixiv followers. Read FANBOX vs Fantia before choosing between them.
Check payouts before moving, because they differ more than headline percentages: creator fees and payout methods compare them, and the best platforms for adult comic creators ranks them. More swaps are on the alternatives hub.
FAQ
Can I post explicit comics on Patreon?
Yes, drawn, animated or written sexual work between non-real subjects is allowed on paywalled Adult/18+ pages after ID and selfie verification. Real sexual activity is banned, as are incest, sexual violence and non-consent in any format.
Which alternative has the lowest fee?
On published rates, itch.io if you cut its share below the 10% default, then Fantia at 12.5% for drawn work. SubscribeStar is 10%, FANBOX 12.9% with R-18 on and Ci-en 13% on R-18 monthly plans. Processing and transfer fees come on top.
What is the Patreon Apple billing change?
Apple required Patreon creators to use subscription billing in the iOS app, with a deadline of November 1, 2026. Web sign-up avoids Apple's 30% fee on iOS purchases. The result of the deadline has not been reported.
Does Gumroad allow adult comics?
No. Gumroad's help article lists adult comics with nudity or sexual acts as not allowed, citing its payment processors.
Can overseas artists use Fantia and FANBOX?
Yes, with limits. Fantia pays overseas creators only if they live abroad permanently and have 50,000 JPY in sales. FANBOX pays out by Japanese bank transfer or PayPal; without a Japanese account, use PayPal.
