Patreon vs SubscribeStar

Choose Patreon if your comic stays clear of incest, non-consent and anything that could read as under 18, and you want payouts whenever you like, apps and published processing rates; choose SubscribeStar if you want a site built for NSFW art and can live with payouts on request from a $150 balance and every post screened before it goes live.

In short

  • Both take a 10% platform fee plus processing. On a $5 US card pledge, a new Patreon page keeps about $4.06; SubscribeStar keeps $4.05 to $3.60 depending on the processor, or the full $4.50 if the creator passes processing to the supporter.
  • Patreon pays out any time or automatically on the 5th, from $10 by PayPal. SubscribeStar pays only on request, once the balance reaches $150 (some US creators $30), at most every 10 business days.
  • Both require ID checks for adult creators and ban incest and non-consent in drawn work. SubscribeStar also pre-screens every post and judges characters by how they look, whatever age the text gives them.
  • Patreon requires clean public previews; explicit work must sit behind the paywall.

For an artist drawing porn comics or hentai, Patreon and SubscribeStar are the two membership platforms that still allow explicit drawn work in English. Both tightened their rules in 2026, and both now cite payment processors when they explain why. The choice comes down to which themes you draw, how fast you need the money, and how much moderation you will accept. Readers comparing other services can browse our platform comparisons.

Who may publish explicit comics

Patreon allows sexual work in drawn form on pages marked Adult/18+: Works depicting sexual activity between non-real subjects (for example in animated, illustrated, written, or audio works) and that comply with Patreon's other guidelines are permitted on pages categorized as Adult/18+. Real people in sexual activity are banned.

SubscribeStar's adult site (subscribestar.adult, now branded SubscribeStar.art) calls itself the "Number one monetization platform for NSFW digital artists". Since March 2026 it hosts fictional work only: Content where real people are the primary subject is not permitted on this platform under any circumstances. Comics, 2D and 3D art, animation and writing are all named as fitting.

Themes each one bans

This decides more than the fees. Both ban the same broad set, but the wording differs in ways that matter for hentai artists.

Patreon, in its Community Guidelines:

  • Incest in any format: Sexualized depictions of incest are not permitted in any works, regardless of how the works were created, with step-siblings and step-parents inside the definition. Cousins, in-laws and spouses are allowed in drawn work on Adult/18+ pages.
  • Sexual violence in drawn work, where non-consent covers coerced consent (e.g. under the influence of drugs or alcohol, hypnosis, blackmail).
  • Bestiality with real-world species; anthropomorphic and mythological characters are allowed.
  • Characters who could read as under 18: the physical appearance and characteristics of subjects must be unmistakably interpreted to be adults and not minors, judged on body, on the title, description and tags, and on settings Patreon links to people under 18, school settings among them.

SubscribeStar, in its Prohibited Content page (updated March 11, 2026), bans Any depiction of underage or underage-appearing characters in sexualized circumstances, regardless of artistic style, canonically under-age characters even if such characters are aged-up by a textual 18+ statement, and Characters portrayed with body proportions and features commonly associated with minors. It adds: For moderation purposes, visual appearance takes precedence over written disclaimers. Incest is banned for fictional and animated characters alike, and non-consent includes mind control or hypnosis, drugs, intoxication, or incapacitation. Bodily-waste fetish content and live streams of any kind are also out.

The practical difference: SubscribeStar's rule about body proportions is written more broadly than Patreon's, and SubscribeStar reviews every post before publication, so a borderline page is stopped before anyone sees it. Our page on adult content rules on creator platforms sets these next to FANBOX, Fantia and the others.

ID checks and moderation

Patreon requires every Adult/18+ creator to pass ID and selfie verification: a government ID showing name, birthdate and photo, plus a photo of yourself, because Payment processors like Mastercard and Visa require Patreon to have all creators sharing sexually explicit creations or creations that include nudity verify that they are over the age of 18. Moderation happens after posting.

SubscribeStar requires creators to pass the KYC and profile screening process before publishing anything, and All content submitted ... is subject to a pre-screening and review process prior to publication. Expect a delay between upload and release.

Fees on a $5 pledge

Patreon charges 10% on pages published after August 4, 2025 (older pages keep legacy rates of 5%, 8% or 11% only while they stay published). Processing on top is 2.9% + $0.30 for cards and US PayPal, 3.9% + $0.30 for PayPal outside the US, with a 2.5% conversion fee when the supporter pays in another currency. Memberships bought inside the iOS app pay Apple 30% instead of processing.

SubscribeStar charges a 10% service fee plus processing of "from 3% + $0.30 to 10% + $0.40", applied by its processors. The creator chooses who pays processing: themselves or the subscriber, shown at checkout. Non-US cards may add a 3.5% international fee for the subscriber.

$5 pledge, US cardPatreon (new page)SubscribeStar, creator pays processingSubscribeStar, subscriber pays processing

Processing$0.445$0.45 to $0.90paid by subscriber
Creator keeps, before payout fee and taxabout $4.06$4.05 to $3.60$4.50

At the low end of SubscribeStar's range the two are level. At the high end SubscribeStar costs the creator nearly twice as much in processing, unless supporters cover it. Patreon publishes exact rates; SubscribeStar gives a range. Both also sell one-off items: Patreon charges 5% to 12% on one-time purchases depending on the plan, and SubscribeStar applies its 10% fee to paid posts and collections. Our creator fee comparison runs the same sum for every platform.

Both require tax forms first (W-8BEN for non-US creators). For a new artist with a handful of supporters, the difference is large: Patreon pays $10 through PayPal; SubscribeStar holds money until the page reaches $150 and five subscribers. Payout routes for other platforms are on creator payout methods.

What the public can see

Patreon requires adult work to sit behind the paywall and the public face of the page to be clean: The public-facing spaces of a creator or member page (e.g. profile image, page banner, tier descriptions, or posts accessible to free members) must be free of nudity (real or animated) sexual activity, or any sexually explicit works. Image previews on Adult/18+ pages are blurred, and Patreon Video is unavailable to them. A comic artist teases with cropped or censored panels. Adult/18+ creators can offer free trials on paid tiers.

SubscribeStar's adult domain is behind an 18+ date-of-birth gate as a whole, and its rules focus on content, not on what free visitors see. It caps subscription prices individually, "typically ranging between $100 and $250".

For supporters

Patreon has iOS (17+) and Android apps, while SubscribeStar works in the browser; we found no app for it. Adult/18+ Patreon pages are listed for "Web & Android Payments", and Apple's deadline of November 1, 2026 for moving all Patreon creators to subscription billing in the iOS app is covered in our Patreon iOS billing report. Fans see adult creators on Patreon only after switching on "See 18+ creators" and confirming they are 18.

Cancelling: Patreon under Settings, Memberships, with access to the end of the billing period; SubscribeStar immediately or at the end of the paid period. Refunds: Patreon doesn't typically offer refunds since payments go directly to creators; SubscribeStar reviews email requests case by case and charges any refund to the creator. On a card statement SubscribeStar shows "SUBSCRIBE STAR" and its support number. Patreon is the billing entity, but it publishes no statement wording.

Which one should you pick?

Pick Patreon if your comic sits within its theme rules, you want money out quickly from small totals, and you want your supporters to have an app. Plan for clean previews and the 10% plus processing.

Pick SubscribeStar if you want a platform whose whole purpose is adult art, with a descriptor supporters recognize and the option to pass processing costs to them. Accept pre-screening, request-only payouts and a $150 threshold. Since March 2026 its theme rules are at least as strict as Patreon's, so do not move there for incest or non-consent work; neither will host it. The SubscribeStar rule change explains what changed.

Artists ruled out by both should look at Patreon alternatives for NSFW artists.

FAQ

Is SubscribeStar better than Patreon for NSFW art?

It is built for it, but it is not looser. Since March 2026 SubscribeStar bans incest, non-consent and characters who look under 18, whatever age the text gives them, and pre-screens every post. Patreon bans the same themes and pays out faster from smaller balances.

Does Patreon allow hentai?

Drawn sexual work is allowed on pages marked Adult/18+, behind the paywall, after ID verification. Hentai with incest, non-consent (including hypnosis or drugging) or characters who could read as under 18 is banned in any format.

What are SubscribeStar's payout requirements?

A $150 balance (some US creators $30), five active subscribers per the FAQ, a $50 minimum request, tax forms and two payout methods. Requests can be made every 10 business days.

Which has lower fees, Patreon or SubscribeStar?

Both take 10%. Patreon's processing is 2.9% + $0.30 on US cards; SubscribeStar's runs from 3% + $0.30 to 10% + $0.40, but the creator can make the subscriber pay it.
