In short
- Scanlation joins "scan" and "translation"; the spelling scanslation also turns up.
- Anime News Network's lexicon calls it technically illegal copyright infringement that fans tolerated.
- The old fan convention was to stop distributing once a book was licensed.
- Licensed platforms pay the people who made the comic; that is the reason they exist.
Scanlation meaning
Anime News Network's lexicon describes a scanlation as a fan-made scan and translation of a manga: the book is digitized, the Japanese text is erased, and English text written by fans replaces it. The same entry compares it to fansubs for anime and calls the practice technically illegal copyright infringement
, tolerated on the understanding that distribution stops once the manga is licensed or the rights holder asks.

From fan groups to aggregator sites
That convention does not hold on the large free sites readers find. Several sites we checked for this guide host the paid catalogs of other studios as free albums and say on their own pages that takedown law does not apply to them. We do not list or link them. The artists are not paid, and some of those catalogs carry material we will not point anyone toward.
Rights holders do go after them. In January 2026 Japan's anti-piracy body CODA announced that a network of about 60 related manga piracy sites had gone offline after its operator was charged in China.
Why licensed platforms exist
A licensed platform pays the people who made the comic. Irodori Comics licenses doujinshi directly from the artists and says it prioritizes the royalty they receive for each work sold
. GlobalComix splits its subscription revenue among the creators a reader actually read, by share of pages. On creator platforms such as Patreon or pixivFANBOX, the money goes to the artist directly.
Licensed reading can also be free. FAKKU gives away a weekly title, Irodori Comics has about 14 artist-approved free titles, and WEBTOON publishes its ORIGINALS free on a weekly schedule. The free options are collected on free hentai manga sites and free porn comics sites.
The legal side is in licensed vs pirated comic sites, the security side in are adult comic sites safe. Self-published fan comics have their own entry under doujinshi, and more terms are in the glossary.
FAQ
Is scanlation legal?
Anime News Network calls it technically copyright infringement. Fans tolerated it on the understanding that it stopped once a book was licensed, which is not how the large free sites behave.
Do scanlations hurt artists?
The artist and publisher earn nothing from a scanlation. Where a licensed English edition exists, a reader who uses the scan instead pays neither of them.
How can I tell if a site is licensed?
Licensed stores name their publishers or artists, sell or rent titles, and have terms and a company behind them. A site that offers whole paid catalogs free with no licensing statement is not licensed.
