In short
- DLsite stopped Visa and Mastercard on April 3, 2024 and American Express a day later; JCB is still its only card brand.
- Irodori Comics sells uncensored English doujinshi as DRM-free PDFs, priced from $5.25 on its home page.
- FAKKU lists Visa, Mastercard and Discover as accepted, but its own processor ended its account in December 2025.
- Ci-en is DLsite's fan site and is on our list, though it shares DLsite's JCB-first card limit.
Why readers look for a DLsite alternative
The main reason is cards. From 18:00 JST on April 3, 2024, DLsite stopped taking Visa and Mastercard, after rewording tags at the card companies' request. American Express followed on April 4. JCB is the only card brand left. Japanese buyers got workarounds: a direct bank payment through the digital bank Minna no Ginko, launched October 6, 2025, and a viviON JCB card that arrived in January 2026. Both need Japanese accounts, so they do not help a reader abroad.
The second reason is mosaics. Japan's Article 175 makes distributing obscene drawings or data a crime, and the mosaic practice on Japanese stores comes from that. English licensors sell uncensored editions outside Japan: FAKKU says its Unlimited subscription has no black bars and no mosaics, and Irodori sells "uncensored English localizations". Readers who want unmosaicked work look to English licensors.
DLsite is a Japanese doujin store. We do not recommend or link it: its own genre list carries categories we do not list, and we have no research file on it, so we do not describe its catalog. The services below sell or post similar work, and each entry states its payment limits. For the wider rules, see the card cutoffs at DLsite, Fantia and FANZA and our entry on mosaic censorship.

Irodori Comics is a small US publisher that licenses doujinshi straight from the artists and sells English editions as DRM-free PDFs, 3200 px tall. Its home page shows prices from $5.25 up to $39.25 for a compilation, with "99¢ Monthly Deals" cutting some titles to $0.99. About 14 titles are free to read online. There is no subscription and no coin system.
It has no PayPal and does not recommend prepaid gift cards. Users in Japan cannot buy uncensored content, access from China, South Korea and New Zealand is blocked, and refunds exist only for a duplicate purchase within 24 hours. Each product page carries a character age disclaimer.
Ci-en

- creator support platform (monthly plans, crowdfunding, one-off articles) run by DLsite's operator
- Formats
- manga, doujinshi
- Free reading

Ci-en is DLsite's fan-support site, where doujin game, manga and voice circles post progress diaries and perks for monthly backers. It is in on this site because its rules are public: R-18 work is allowed with concealment, live-action sexual content is banned, and plans are set by each creator between 100 and 100,000 JPY. The age gate is a click-through, and creators link their DLsite circles from their pages.
It does not solve the card problem. Card payments are limited to JCB with 3-D Secure, and the supporter's alternative is viviON points bought on DLsite, which accept e-money, net banking, convenience-store payment, d払い, WebMoney, BitCash and Paidy. Some foreign cards fail. Content is mostly game progress posts, not finished comics.
Fantia
Best for circles' downloads if you hold JCB or Amex

- Free
- Type
- creator support platform (fan club plans, digital and physical goods, commissions)
- Formats
- manga, doujinshi
- Free reading
- Yes
Fantia, Toranoana's fan club platform, lets circles sell monthly plans, downloads, goods and commissions. Plans run from 100 to 100,000 JPY. Visa and Mastercard have been suspended since May 21, 2024, including for Tora Coin purchases, so cards are limited to JCB and American Express. The Tora Coin shop also accepts PayPay, FamiPay, au PAY, Merpay, Bitcash and crypto, at one yen a coin.
Mosaics are mandatory. Fantia tightened its mosaic rules on May 25, 2026 after a police inquiry about live-action content and reverted them for 2D work four days later. The site has no app, search and rankings need a login, and posts are mostly Japanese, though the interface has an English switch.
FAKKU
Best for a licensed subscription
- Price
- Free tier · from $14.95 (30 Day Unlimited Card)
- Type
- English hentai manga publisher and store
- Formats
- manga, doujinshi, western comics
- Free reading
- Yes
FAKKU is the largest licensed English hentai publisher, with books and doujinshi to buy and the FAKKU Unlimited subscription for the online catalogue. A 63-page doujin cost $8.50 on one title page, and home-page prices ran from $6.48 on sale to $24.25. Prepaid Unlimited cards on its merch store are $14.95 for 30 days and $179 for 365 days.
Its support page lists Visa, Mastercard and Discover, and no PayPal, American Express or crypto. FAKKU's processor of 11 years ended its account in December 2025, and the company added direct bank transfers, so check the accepted methods at checkout. Digital titles can be refunded within 3 days if not downloaded.
pixivFANBOX
Best for a plain card statement

- Type
- creator subscription platform (monthly fan plans)
- Formats
- manga
- Free reading
- Yes
FANBOX is pixiv's monthly plan service for Japanese illustrators and doujin artists, with plans of 100 to 10,000 JPY. Your card report shows "PIXIV FANBOX" and never the creator's name. It has no app, mosaics are mandatory, and refunds are not given, even for a partial month. Some payment methods are Japan only.
Anyone who had not paid with PayPal on FANBOX before March 21, 2024 cannot use PayPal to support R-18 creators. On September 25, 2026 creators reported suspensions of posts, some years old, with notices citing a payment processor, so a creator you follow may lose posts.
itch.io
Best for indie downloads from the artist
- Price
- Free
- Type
- open indie marketplace with an NSFW comics section
- Formats
- western comics, doujinshi, 3D comics
- Free reading
- Yes
itch.io has western comics, doujinshi and 3D work as DRM-free downloads, and its NSFW browse page lists 218 free comics. The browse page needs only a date-of-birth gate. Stripe card payments are not available for sexually explicit pages, which limits paid adult work, and paid adult pages had not been announced as re-indexed in search by that date.
It is the weakest answer to a card problem and the strongest for free reading. In July 2025 it also blocked adult-tagged pages for UK visitors pending age verification.

How to choose
Start with how you pay. A Visa or Mastercard holder can try Irodori or FAKKU first. A JCB or American Express holder can use Fantia, and Ci-en works with JCB too. If you hold none of those cards, the choice narrows to Irodori and FANBOX, where we could not confirm which card brands work.
Then decide what you read. For English translations, pick Irodori for single titles or FAKKU for a subscription. For circles that never get a translation, Fantia and Ci-en follow them, in Japanese. Our best hentai manga sites ranking and doujinshi page cover more options, FANBOX vs Fantia compares the two Japanese plan services, and FAKKU vs Irodori compares the English ones. FAQ
Why did DLsite stop Visa and Mastercard?
DLsite suspended both on April 3, 2024 after rewording tags at the card companies' request, according to Automaton. American Express followed on April 4, and JCB is the only card brand left.
Is Ci-en a DLsite alternative?
It is DLsite's own fan site, so it keeps you in the same ecosystem and the same payment limits. It is on our list and worth using to follow circles, not to escape the card problem.
Where can I get uncensored doujinshi in English?
Irodori Comics sells uncensored English editions as DRM-free PDFs, and FAKKU says its Unlimited catalogue has no black bars or mosaics, though some titles carry Mosaics or Whiteout tags.
Which alternative takes Visa?
FAKKU's support page lists Visa, Mastercard and Discover. Fantia has taken neither Visa nor Mastercard since May 2024. We could not confirm card brands for Irodori or for FANBOX supporters.
Does DLsite still work for overseas readers?
We do not cover its current checkout. The Minna no Ginko bank payment and the viviON JCB card are for Japanese account holders.
